Aluminum Wiring Pigtail with wrong aluminum wire nuts twist ons - don't get sucked in! Many aluminum wiring connectors are abound in this industry. Many manufacturers are trying to cash in on the emergency of aluminum wire fire hazards cropping up nation-wide. I don't have a problem with that per se. The problem I have is when a manufacturer make a connector product that is proven to fail and insists on promoting and selling them regardless. Yes, some have somehow slipped through the so-called testing rigors to be approved by CSA (Canada Standards Association) and UL (Underwriters Laboratories) in the United States. Unfortunately, none of these people at the manufacturers or at these "approval" agencies are living under the roof of YOUR home exposed to the very real possibility of a fire caused by the aluminum wire connections repaired by these connectors. In this very short video, I highlight the twist-on connectors, the bane of this industry. Proven in laboratories and in-the-field testings to fail on a regular basis, these products are promoted by uninformed electricians, home renovation companies and electrical wholesalers as a permanent repair for aluminum wiring hazards. To be sure, these connectors CAN be used, but only as a TEMPORARY repair only. However, there are procedures that must be followed to reduce the chance of a fire hazard rearing its ugly head in your wall. Unfortunately, none of the installation material included with these connectors mention these steps. According to Dr. Jesse Aronstein, a powerhouse scientist who has studied thousands of aluminum wire connections and made recommendations for their repair over 35 years, the following step MUST be taken to help reduce the chances of fires occurring from these twist on connectors: 1) After stripping the insulation off the wire for the proper distance, by using a stripping tool that does not nick the wire, coat the bare aluminum with a non-combustible corrosion inhibitor compound. 2) Abrade the surface of the aluminum wire -- with the compound on it -- with #240 grit “wet-ordry abrasive paper. Maintain the coating of compound while abrading.

3)

Coat mating parts of the connector (if not factory prefilled) with corrosion inhibitor compound.

Then the arduous task of checking every one of these connections at least every 12 months is HIOGHLY recommended by Dr. Aronstein. The simplest way to avoid the problems associated with these twist on type connectors is to not use them - period. The ONLY way to repair these connections is to: 1. replace the aluminum wiring in your home with copper - a daunting and expensive task. 2. pigtail the aluminum wiring to copper with Copalum connectors. 3. pigtail with AlumiConn connectors Copalum and AlumiConn are the only two connectors approved by United States Consumer Product Safety Commission and Dr. Aronstein, amoungst many others who report the same.
