FREE TOPIC STUDIO VĚTŘNÍ - VISION FOR THE PAPER MILL location: Větřní, Southern Bohemia, Czech Republic design studio: doc. Ing. arch. Jan Jehlík, Czech Technical University in Prague in cooperation with: Kateřina Stiehlová The project is suggesting new opportunities for the half abandoned paper mill in town Větřní, southern Bohemia. Větřní lies close to the town of Český Krumlov (UNESCO) on the bank of river Vltava. Region close to the Austrian border is popular for tourism, both for sightseeing and sport. Vltava river is popular for canoeing. The factory was forced to stop most of the production due to the massive import of cheaper paper from Asia and is currently insolvent and only 20% of the whole area is working. The paper mill has a great importance for the town Větřní because it was the founding of the factory that initiated the biggest development of the town in 19th century and it was one of the biggest employers in the region. On the other hand, presence of a factory of such size on the riverside creates a great barrier in accessibility of the river. When most of the area is not needed for paper production any more, it is time to start thinking about reducing the area size and to ensure better transmittance. Future of the paper mill in Větřní is an issue of a very high importance. In the worst scenario, leaving the idle parts of the area unwatched and derelict may cause wide variety of troubles for the whole town including decreased safety and increased criminality. Our project is proposing a strategy for adapting the paper mill to the new economical conditions, we are proposing new use for abandoned historical industrial buildings and also stronger connection with the town. Instead of an impenetrable factory we are proposing a different concept of a “creative industry” which can combine production, education, tourism and culture. Part of the proposal are also new connections to the river and refurbishing of the public spaces related to the paper mill.

Wall defines precisely the area of paper mill. Its aim is to highlight the the whole area and its importance and vastness. It should captivate the visitors it is a sign there is something going behind it. Proposed wall is perforated, therefore slightly transparent. That allows passersby to glimpse inside and draws their attention. The wall also guides towards its gates where you can actually enter, when opened. The wall ends before the conveyor and camp area at the riverbanks which is always opened. layer 2 - railway This layer is not newly proposed. We are proposing new use for it. Railway currently used only for the paper mill will be used also as a public transport and transport of the canoes in summer. TRAIN STATION - CAMP

DISAPPEARING CURRENT Southern end of paper mill used to serve for wood processing. Nowadays it is completely abandoned and creates barrier on the river bank. With contemporary technologies used in paper production this area will not be needed any more. PROPOSED We are excluding the abandoned parts from the paper mill area and giving them back to nature.

CROSSROADS AT THE WATER STREAM CURRENT Space devoted to traffic. PROPOSED By removing idle part of the road we create space for relaxation at the water stream. This tranquil nook is the entrance to a quiet residential area.

2 6

THE CONVEYOR

ROŽMBERSKÁ STREET

CURRENT The conveyor is not used anymore. It is only the remains of the whole structure. Its demolition would be very difficult. PROPOSED We exclude this part of the paper mill area and we leave it accessible for public. It can serve as a summer camp for canoeists. The conveyor remains a s a monument of the past.

CURRENT Rožmberská street is the border between the paper mill and the rest of the town. Hight transit traffic is the main problem. PROPOSED We propose wider sidewalks, we clarify the border of paper mill with the new unified wall.

5

CRAFTS WORKSHOPS RESTORATION CURRENT Former crafts workshop is currently empty and abandoned. With new technologies in the paper industry the workshop is not necessary for the production any more. On the edge of the area facing street there are objects of lodgings.

4

PROPOSED For this part which can easily work independently on the rest of the area we propose new use for the vacant objects. We restore the crafts workshops as a space for crafts learning. In cooperation with the paper mill which will start producing more exclusive products an arts & crafts school can hold their workshops. Paper mill’s aim has to be high quality bespoke production which the bigger Asian paper producers cannot satisfy. Current interest in traditional crafts and products origin and emphasised role of local products brings a chance for the paper mill to widen their activities. Workshops showing the traditional craft to public are very popular nowadays. Some of the buildings can be rented for various business. This will bring new employers to the town. The lodgings buildings will serve as a temporary accommodation for visitors or workshop participants or as a seasonal accommodation for tourists. The whole area of paper mill can be walked around along the river bank on restored footbridges. New pedestrian bridge brings access to the opposite bank. CURRENT STATE

CONNECTION VLTAVA RIVER - PAPER MILL COMMUNITY CENTRE CURRENT The whole crossroads at the main gate to the paper mill is quite neglected and does not remind at all of the famous history of the factory. The main entrance is not welcoming or representing. Vltava river is not accessible from the town. PROPOSED This place is crutial node not only for the paper mill but also for the whole town Větřní. Necessary steps for public space improvement are better accessibility, transmittance and restoration of the community centre at the crossroads. We are turning the crossroads into a real square. Unified paving emphasises the importance of this place and recreates visual connection between the community centre and the paper mill. On the axis community centre - Vltava river we are proposing paper mill’s showroom with restaurant and new bridge across the river. All new objects are united in material - corten metal. Another connecting elements are the trees - one the square in front of community centre and one inside the paper mill area in front of the restaurant. Right after the entrance gate begins the coloured surface - colour guide through the paper mill. Visitors can walk around the whole area on the river bank. All proposed steps should help the paper mill to begin new more successful era. First steps to start revitalization of the factory. Interference to still working (although restricted) factory is quite unusual but we believe with enlightened management the paper mill has a great potential.

CURRENT Main access to Větřní does not look very welcoming. Border between paper mill and town is not clear. PROPOSED We define the paper mill borders with the new metal wall. Vacant space in the northern edge of the area with access to the river can serve for for various events.

BEACH ABOVE THE WEIR CURRENT Opposite river bank is untidy although there leads a path along. It is a place where the people on canoes often stop to have some rest. PROPOSED Beach for the canoeists - overlooking the paper mill workshops. WASTE WATER TREATMENT CURRENT There is a lot of vacant space in the northern area of the paper mill. PROPOSED This space is ideal for locating new larger and more ecological waste water treatment for the whole town.

GATE UNDERNEATH & LOOKOUT TOWER CURRENT Paper mill is one floor lower than the street level. The building for cellulose processing is abandoned. PROPOSED We propose new use for the building - a look out tower. Visitors can observe work in the paper mill without actually disturbing the work. We place a new gate underneath the building.

CURRENT River banks are thistly and untidy. The opposite bank is accessible only with the bridge on the north end of the area. There is a gravel path on the opposite bank. PROPOSED We propose the path as a cycling path which can easily join the existing network of cycling paths in the region. To strengthen the connection of both river banks we propose new footbridges. When appropriate we are creating direct access to the water - beaches.

COMPREHENSIVE PROJECT - SQUARE REFURBISHMENT HAVLÍČKOVO NÁMĚSTÍ, PRAGUE, CZECH REPUBLIC location: Prague, Czech Republic design studio: Henry W. A. Hansov IV, RA RLA LEED AP, Czech Technical University in Prague Comprehensive study for a square in Prague 3 - Havlíčkovo náměstí follows-up previous project of a vision for Prague 3 public spaces according to a Child Friendly City concept. The square was chosen for this detailed project because it is an important square where the city disctrict town hall and elementary school are located. The site is in a very significant slope so barrier free accessibility is a very considerable issue. Design focuses most on the space in front of the public buildings where it is creating a pedestrian only zone. Second element is the park in the centre of the square. To provide barrier free access to the school I am taking advantage of the natural slope. I am removing interior steps leading from street to the ground floor and I am making the ground floor level with the street by placing exterior steps joined with the naturally sloping street - ramp instead. Comprehensive study does not include only the design but also whole set of technical drawings such as planting plan, grading plan, drainage plan and various technical details.

URBAN DESIGN STUDIO

URBAN DESIGN STUDIO CHILD FRIENDLY CITY - PRAGUE 3, VISION FOR PRAGUE “INTO THE WILD GREEN WONDER” location: Prague, Czech Republic design studio: Henry W. A. Hansov IV, RA RLA LEED AP, Czech Technical University in Prague in cooperation with: Tereza Lorencová, Marie Stavinohová Child Friendly City is an international concept which allows children to grow up in pleasant, safe environment full of impulses and dynamics. Children and adults are treated equally, children are part of the city life and the public space, their activities are not limited by strictly defined spaces. Our vision of Prague 3 as a child friendly city is taking advantage of a great treasure Prague 3 has, the number and vastness of its public green areas. These areas have a great potential not only for Prague 3 as a district but also for the whole city of Prague. We consider these areas most important for the children - they offer space to play freely and safely in natural surroundings. Contact with nature is becoming increasingly important for the children growing up in a city, however the existing areas need better accessibility and connections with the surrounding city and between themselves. The project has three main layers - context of the whole city, relationships between green spaces within Prague 3 and the green nodes themselves. The strategy is to share the advantages of the areas suitable for recreation within the whole city - to connect Prague 3 to the rest of the city by a green pedestrian and cycling belt, to suggest pedestrian friendly network within Prague 3 city district and to offer various options of use for the green nodes. Proposed green belt is offering an opportunity to escape from the busy city to a tranquil piece of nature. A place to relax, to rest, to dream... The project was presented to the municipality of Prague 3 as a basis for further decision making which places to focus on when planning.

STUDY EXCHANGE IN GLASGOW

2014

STUDY EXCHANGE IN GLASGOW BATHHOUSE IN KELVINGROVE PARK location: Glasgow, United Kingdom design studio: David C. Reat, MArch, University of Strathclyde in Glasgow Project of the bathhouse is situated in one of the biggest Glasgow parks - The Kelvingrove Park. This park is an important leisure time destination especially for the adjacent University of Glasgow and also for the visitors visit of Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum. The actual site is located in a bend of the River Kelvin, which runs through the park. Visually the building is derived from three main elements - continuation of the street - Kelvin Way, predominant axis in the area and the natural shape of the site with the surrounding nature. Very important element is the trees on the site. The building is as respectful to the existing trees as possible - the bathhouse is growing into the trees and trees are growing into the bathhouse. As a further connection to Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum I propose a new footbridge over the River Kelvin where there it is currently lacking such connection. The proposed building of bathhouse should serve not only for sports, but especially for realaxation, leisure time and as a meeting venue. This role is enhanced by the Kelvingrove park itself, whose character is a classic Victorian park with recreation facilities as bowling greens, tennis courts, a skateboard park and children’s play areas. History is represented by many statues and monuments such as The Stewart Memorial Fountain spread across the park. The building is divided into two volumes. First - longitudinal two storey volume with gym, massage room and relaxation areas, beauty salon and a restaurant and second volume of pools. Main pool area is double height. Both masses are connected by a glazed connecting bridge which optically continues in exterior decorative pool. Main element of the bathhouse - water divides and connects at the same time. Materials used are concrete for the structure, often exposed in the interior and traditional light sandstone for facade.

COMPEX OF BUILDING STUDIO

COMPLEX OF BUILDINGS STUDIO RESIDENTIAL COMPLEX ŽIŽKOV location: Prague, Czech Republic design studio: prof. Ing. arch. Jan Sedlák, Czech Technical University in Prague Complex of residential buildings - two blocks of houses is located in the Prague quarter Žižkov. This quarter lies next to the city centre but is separated from it by a barrier of main train station, Žižkov is characterised by its terrain morhoplogy. High Hill Vítkov isolates Žižkov from rest of the city on the north. Area pattern consists mainly of the 19th century blocks of tenement buildings. In the upper parts of Žižkov, where the terrain is milder were some of the tenements replaced with prefabricated blocks of flats in 1970’s. Site is situated right in this area, where the unitary nature of the 19th century buildings changes. Neighbouring site to the south is one of the prefabricated blocks that were supposed to change the trait of Žižkov. Northern border of the site creates busy Koněvova Street, southern side looks into much quieter Roháčova Street which is specific for the number of green public spaces related. Proposed two blocks of buildings are on the north side following the street line of Koněvova and are the same height. This creates more tranquil environment for inner yards and the back side of the blocks. Towards south to Roháčova Street the building heights are decreasing. That brings more daylight to the buildings and creates better interior conditions. Objects in Roháčova Street back away from the street line, this forms broader sidewalk - another public space in a line of public spaces along. Roháčova Street.

BACHELOR DEGREE PROJECT - PART I - DESIGN STUDY CULTURAL AND EDUCATIONAL CENTRE “WORKSHOP OF NATIONS” location: Leipzig, Germany design studio: doc. Ing. arch. Irena Šestáková, Czech Technical University in Prague Two parts bachelor project consists of part 1 - design study and part 2 - detailed structure & technology, interior detail. Cultural and educational centre is located in Leipzig in the city district Leipziger Osten. This district is a former industrial quarter characterised by high unemlpoyment, social segregation and significant number of abandoned or underused objects and sites. Area is also known for its high concentration of inhabitants of various nationalities and religions. It is the “melting pot” of Leipzig. New building of cultural and educational centre should become an important venue of Leipziger Osten. It should offer various leisure time activities and events as well as education and basic consultancy. Its main goal is to unite people of Leipzig, to contribute to integration of minorities and reciprocal tolerance in society. Site is located on interface of compact city pattern and pattern of solitary objects (elementary school, kindergarten) in a park. It is a gap between a row of houses on Eisenbahnstrasse, currently a car park. “Workshop of Nations” project respects street line of the main street but its volume forming also follows more relaxed form of the solitary buildings in the park. Project is divided into two separate objects - educational centre and cultural & leisure time centre. Cultural centre object consist of three cuboid volumes that are creating passageway from the main street to the park and kindergarten. Educational centre is a simple single cuboid volume. Facades are richly glazed in combination of opaque, translucent and transparent glass and aluminum panels. In exterior the “Workshop of Nations” offers new public spaces for occasional markets and outdoor events. High transparency of facades should help to connect the interior with the exterior, to draw attention of passers-by.

Antonín Jeníček, Czech Technical University in Prague Catholic church is located on the edge of Barrandov housing estate. Most of the buildings in the area are 1970’s prefabricated high-rise . The site is situated on the interface of housing and nature. Design follows the traditional east-western orientation of church’s main axis. Shape of the church in plan reacts on the main directions in the area. Concept of the volume is based on principle of gradation and usage of basic triangular shapes . The volume ascends from nature to buildings. The church narrows towards the presbytery where it is also highest in elevation. This emphasizes the importance of the presbytery. Significant element for the church is light. Daylight is brought to the interior from two sides. From the east through a glazes wall behind the presbytery which is sheltered by additional exterior wall. More light comes in through the skylight from the western side.
