MAKING YOUR OWN TSHIRT QUILT – UNDERSTANDING THE SASHING Planning on making a tshirt quilt with all those old pieces of clothing you have lying around? Great Idea! But now.. Let’s take design a bit further and add some colourful borders and sashes to each tshirt face you will be adding to the quilt. Think how much more lively the entire design will turn out to be! I will tell you how you can make it happen. All the back fabric of your tshirt that will be left behind after you have taken out their fronts to use in the quilt will be perfect for this job. These can be used as sashing strips to make a decorative grid for placing each tshirt face in. Contrasting colours will really mix the design up, making the t shirt quilt even catchier! Plan on 2" sashing strips (1 1/2" when finished) between the blocks, 2 1/2" strips (2" when finished) for the border, and additional fabric for the binding. These sashes will be first sewed to each tshirt block and then to each other to bring the whole thing together. Make sure that the first and last block of each row has a sash strip on each end. This will help ensure that when you complete the quilt, an end border will come together automatically. When deciding the colour combination, don’t keep any holds barred. The more mix and match the better. Bring in contrasting colors and weird combinations to put together a funky and quirky look for your tshirt quilt.
