Dave planted up the fountain with plants donated by Syston Town Council. Once again thank you.

Only the Father’s Day display last month, and the summer theme this month for me to do. It’s been lovely to see the Chapel being used especially at the weekend for quiet reflection, it’s so very peaceful. Don’t forget the Chapel is available to hire - please contact Catherine Voyce on 0116 260 7150 at Syston Town Council for further information. Also, if you wish to purchase a standard rose in memory of a loved one, again contact Catherine at Syston Town Council to arrange it, a small plaque can be purchased to dedicate the Rose.

Hello everyone – Phew what a hot few weeks we have had. The poor flowers aren’t surviving very long and I’m constantly filling my bags with the dead flowers and plants. I try to water fresh flowers when I go in the evenings for you, to help them last a little longer. Having said that the hanging baskets and flower tubs and the beds look fantastic, this is because the hanging baskets and tubs are selfwatering, a credit to Syston Town Council. Thank you.

Take care everyone enjoy the lovely weather. Ros

Barkby and Beeby W.I.

Cllr Andrew Brown JP outlined his lifeas a farmerand his year as High Sheriffof RutlandtoBarkby and Beeby WI. He explained the originsof representing the monarch through this rolefrom circa 1440. The checked table brought aboutthe term 'exchequer' and the clearing of the vergesbecame the 'verger'. The 18thcentury uniform is the same as 'Black Rod' and the arms of the sheriff were the two swords mentioned at the recent Coronation. Vicki Green, Secretary.

Wanlip Sailing Club Welcomes VIP Visitor

took Sara out on a safety boat so she could enjoy our beautiful location and wildlife and see the size of our water, which is just 10 acres and would fit into Whitwell Bay at Rutland. We then served up scones, jam and cream with various drinks on offer, giving Sara the opportunity to chat with numerous members, sailors and paddle boarders, on a wide range of subjects.

“We’re probably one of the smallest clubs in the Midlands, and we talked about how we could attract youngsters to sailing and encourage some of our older members to return following the pandemic.

Those challenges have raised a total of over £30,000 and made a massive difference to so many deserving families but that being said, there’s always been a feeling of unfinished business, one last itch so to speak.

Many of you will know I turned 50 a few months ago and my aim is to try and raise £20,000 to take my fundraising to £50,000 so this is it…..The final curtain, the last hurrah, my final challenge - and this one is the biggest yet!

Wanlip Sailing Club was pleased to welcome a VIP visitor as part of Midlands tour by the chief executive of the Royal Yachting Association (RYA), Sara Sutcliffe MBE.

Exploring the successes and challenges experienced by different clubs, Sara also visited Notts County SC and Rutland SC (20-21 June 2023), coinciding with the launch of the RYA’sTogether on Watervision for the future of sailing and boating.

The visit to Wanlip SC in Leicestershire enabled Sara to find out more about one of the region’s smallest clubs, along with her colleagues,Ben Hodgson, RYA MidlandsRegional Development Officer, andJudy Lambourne, RYA Midlands Regional Volunteer Team Chair.

Commodore Richard Harris said: “We

“Sara was able to tell us about the new RYA Together on Water strategy and how that may help us to reach out to new members. It was a relaxed and enjoyable afternoon and really informative.”

Wanlip SC is an inclusive family-friendly club offering paddleboarding, social sailing and racing, with regular events and a newly refurbished clubhouse. For further information visit: www.wanlipsc. co.uk or discover more about how to start boating at: www.rya.org.uk/startboating

Darren Bradbury's The Vicious Cycle

So as most of you know, over the last couple of years, I’ve taken on one or two challenges to raise some money for a charity that has become very close to my heart!

The aim is to ride 700 miles in 7 days covering Leicestershire, the hills of Derbyshire, Nottinghamshire, the wind and coasts of Lincolnshire, Northamptonshire and also Rutland! A massive ask but I’m determined to do it and raise as much money as I can for these amazing children who deserve so much more!

As always, your support is very much appreciated by menphys and myself. If you would like to donate through JustGiving it is simple, fast and totally secure. Your details are safe with JustGiving - they'll never sell them on or send unwanted emails. Once you donate, they'll send your money directly to the charity. Syston’s Only Dedicated Newspaper

Town C.C and the Miracle at Potters Lane

Those people who were at Syston’s ground on 24th June will never forget what they were fortunate enough to witness. Leicester Caribbean were the visitors and the 2nd XI did well to dismiss them for 125 with Abrar Pathan bowling superbly to take 529. Syston’s innings never really got off the ground and they quickly slumped to 30-9 and all seemed lost.

other ideas. They batted correctly and very sensibly and amid scenes of great excitement they put on an unbeaten stand of 97 to win the game. It really was a cricketing miracle the like of which I’ve never seen before nor am likely to see again. Dharmist finished on 53 not out and Joe on 22 not out.

The team also pulled a game out of the fire the previous week with another single wicket victory. A good all round bowling performance saw league leaders Maher Stars dismissed for 143 and despite 52 from Chirag Modi it took last man Joe to steal a quick single off the penultimate ball of the match to win the game. The seconds are on quite a roll and they followed these narrow victories with a comfortable win away at YMA. After bowling out the home side for 169 they knocked off the runs with only three wickets down. Faisal Jariwala was man of the match with four wickets and an unbeaten seventy.

The 1st XI are finding the going tough in the Premier Division having only won one match so far and currently lie second to bottom. Syston’s bowlers are generally doing their job but the batting lacks consistency. The problem was highlighted in the match at Cropston. The home side were bowled out for 177 and with Syston on 176-7 victory seemed assured. However not another run was scored and defeat was a bitter pill to swallow after dominating the majority of the game.

The Sirens have now finished their league season and what a splendid year they’ve had with six victories out of seven matches. They wait to see if they will qualify for the end of season play-offs. The Sunday XI lost to Rothley but the bright spot of the match was the two wickets taken by Ben Tebbutt. In doing so he became the first player to take 100 career wickets for the team. Syston won a nail biter against Leicester University Staff. Batting first Syston set a target of 174 with Tuschar Prafulchandra making 56 and Yash Patel 71 and then they bowled well to restrict LUS to 172-8 and victory by just two runs.
