T h e c u r r e n t COV I D -1 9 p a n d e m i c h a s l e d t o unp re ce d ente d disr uptions in the wor kp lace . Laboratories have had to adapt to the ever-changing demands of testing regimes and Microbiolog y laboratories in particular have had to deal with a massive influx of COVID-19 samples whilst balancing their current workloads and dealing with staff absences as a direct result of the virus or self-isolation rules.
Virtual Symposium 2020 | 9 Live webinars were conducted by guest speakers from Germany and Spain, on topics such as “how innovative technology can support to fight Antimicrobial Resistance”, and on “Urinary albumin Strip assays as a screening test to replace quantitative technology”.
Sysmex UK recognised that during this time laboratory staff have contributed significantly to the public health crisis at the detriment of their own professional development. With this in mind, the Urinalysis team delivered a week-long dedicated training programme free-of-charge to our Microbiology customers.
The Urinalysis team also introduced for the first time a third-party quality control for the UF-5000 analysers called Eurocell-Body Fluid-U which will be available exclusively from Sysmex UK. The performance of this QC was shared as well as details on how to purchase this QC and how to process it on the UF-5000 analysers.
The training week was a huge success with participants joining the 17 live webinars and utilising the 8 self-directed learning modules from all over the UK and Ireland. It also provided laboratory staff with the opportunity to utilise the brand new Sysmex Academy which was launched in May 2021, and to really see the benefits of this new platform. Due to the structure of the virtual training week, it allowed laboratory staff to pick and choose which sessions to attend for minimum disruption to the continuation of laboratory services. The agenda included a range of topics providing an opportunity for all grades of staff to participate and be involved.
Sysmex UK also provided all participants a certificate after the completion of a short test to meet all training requirements and ensure staff have evidence for their continual professional development.
Carian Barber-Colegate and Daniel Evans from Public Health Wales also shared their experience in carrying out body fluid validation on the UF-5000 analysers and highlighted the ease of testing body fluids on the analyser and the benefits of utilising automation to test body fluid samples.
This training week really highlighted the unique benefits that Sysmex UK offers its customers. We look for ward to seeing you at the next Sysmex UK Microbiology Training week 2022.
