New Year’s Eve, our very own Susan Dutch has you covered. Turn to page [24] and Miz Match will get the holiday love conversation started. Last, but not least, we know you’re all finishing up your holiday shopping and we don’t want you to miss any great local deals! Turn to page [20] to see our holiday fabulous finds. This section and almost every page has last minute gift ideas and the best deals in CNY. Clip those coupons, fold those pages or stuff this edition in your bag, and make those final days of holiday shopping a breeze! “Women are the real architects of society.” — Cher ‘Tis the season to gather with loved ones and tell one another how grateful we are for yet another year filled with blessings. At Syracuse Woman Magazine, it is of course, always the season to honor and celebrate the great achievements of our local leading ladies. Every woman in our region is doing something to help shape our society, whether they know it or not. We will enter our fourth year of publishing in 2014, which means we have covered a lot of ground thus far. However, as you may have guessed, there are still many stories to be shared! Sharing your voice with the community has become one of my favorite things to do. Giving voice to untold stories is what we’re about. We want you to be better connected with what’s happening around you. Each woman who has graced the pages of SWM is aiming to make her community a better place the best way she knows how. And for that, we are grateful! In this edition, we take a look back on all those beautiful glossy covers that hit stands in 2013 by conducting our annual Holiday Q&A with SWM cover women. Turn to page [16] to find out what our 2013 cover women have on their minds for the holiday season. Plus, it’s also time to start thinking about what you’ll do on New Year’s Eve, and for some, you’re already thinking about what you’ll wear! Flip to page [12] for some great holiday fashion tips from Jasmon Brown. Also, the holidays can bring up a touchy subject for many women ‑ relationships! Whether you’re mother is trying to fix you up while you’re sitting at Christmas dinner or if you’re wondering what to do as a single woman on

As for me, I must extend a very big “thank you” to all the community members that supported my Teal Marathon Missions to benefit Hope for Heather Ovarian Cancer Awareness of CNY. I ran both the San Diego Marathon in June and the Philadelphia Marathon in November in order to raise about $5,000, thanks to many donations from CNY and across the country, too. Plus, Fleet Feet Syracuse donated to the cause by making sure I had the right teal apparel for my mission ‑thank you! Together, we spread the awareness mission across the country. As I have said before, running is not for everyone and running a (full) marathon is not for every runner. However, I have come to find that marathons are in fact for me and they were meant to give me a special way to fundraise and raise awareness for the cause that I represent. I am proud to be the Hope for Heather media spokeswoman and I am proud to be a part of a community that is so supportive to this mission. There are more missions to come in 2014 and we won’t stop until we know women are aware and when there’s a cure for not only ovarian cancer, but all types of cancer. As always, we’re here to celebrate your ideas and your achievements, but most of all we’re here to talk about what matters most to you. Keep in touch with us online at facebook.com/ SyracuseWomanMagazine and on Twitter at @SyrWomanMag. You also can follow me on Twitter at @FarahJadran for behind-thescenes coverage of SWM and lots of tweets about running, food and fashion! Until next year, be beautiful and genuine. In other words ‑ be you! Sincerely,

Farah

“The holidays are a time when we do a lot of custom work,” says Daniel Welch, owner of Welch & Co. Jewelers in North Syracuse. “Sometimes that requires us to use stones belonging to the family and we re-purpose them into a special design adding even more meaning to the piece.” Welch says that creating a piece of jewelry around someone’s distinct taste is a very personal and special gift, which is why it tends to be a popular gift idea. Also, the holidays brings the call for a lot of

personalized jewelry for the holidays. “Rings are very popular gifts for mothers during the holidays,” Welch said. “The OWL (Ones We Love) family pendants with the names of all the children are popular for mothers and grandmothers.” And after the custom and personalized orders come in… What’s next? “The most popular request leading up to the holiday season is diamond jewelry,” Welch said.

keep the list available year-round and update them as often as possible, some people don’t even remember everything on the list,” Welch said. This means recipients are still surprised even though they technically picked it out!

These requests can be anything in the realm of diamonds including earrings, bracelets (both bangle and tennis style), rings and diamond fashion rings.

“Sometimes we use the wish list as a guide for picking another item using their choices as a guide for taste,” Welch said. “Assisting people who are looking for a special gift that will touch the heart of the recipient is a fun time for us and rewarding when they come in after the holidays to tell us how much they love their jewelry.”

Also, Santa Claus isn’t the only one who keeps a list. Welch has long provided a “Wish List” program for his customers. He says both women and men participate in the program. “Since we

BY JASMON BROWN If you’re like me, you start to think about New Year’s Eve months in advance. Thinking about what I am going to do, who I am going to see and what my resolutions will be can be a little overwhelming as New Year’s Eve is quite the holiday. Whether you are heading out for a night on the town, spending time with a loved one or making it a girls’ night in. you have to dress accordingly. But before you pull out your scroll of resolutions — I will help you find the right look to bring in the New Year marvelously. There will be a lot of parties to choose from, but remember that they will all be very festive, fun, and fierce! New Year’s Eve is the time to bring out your inner Carrie from “Sex in The City.” Dust off those incredible garments that have been sitting in the back of your closet with nowhere to go. Now is not the time to be reserved in your selections. Since it is the time of year that is geared toward celebration, it is best to stay away from dresses and skirts that go past your midcalf. Anything below that length will not reinforce the occasion. This is not your average dinner party! On the other hand, if dresses are not your forte, opt for skinny leg jeans or great fitting trousers. However, you must be careful that you do not look like Monday morning in the office so be cautious of what top you pair with your bottoms. Form-fitting clothing is a great way to show off your curves and can make you feel sexy. Notable form fitting attire includes Bodycon dresses, pencil skirts and high waist pants. They enhance your curves in all the right places and can also give the illusion of a curvier figure if you’re looking to achieve that look. Keep in mind that form-fitting pieces can be tricky so take advantage of foundation pieces such as shape wear to smooth out and create a more polished look if necessary. Another way to mix things up when partying the night away is to show a little skin, if you feel comfortable. Wearing strapless pieces, lace/sheer cutouts and crop tops are great ways to make your outfit chic and sexy without showing too much. Use this night to step out of your comfort zone and go for that top you have had your eye on! And we can’t forget about showing off those amazing legs. Try out a pair of designer stockings to glam up your outfit and finish off your look with a great shoe to elongate those stems. When you walk into the room you want to look ravishing — let’s make those heads turn! We are bringing in the new year and this night is the time to truly step out! Grab that dress that makes you feel like a million bucks and those shoes that gives you that powerful walk. This is your night to set precedence of what you want next year to be. It is believed that the way you ring in the new year is the way you will spend the new year. So, let’s bring in 2014 with style! Jasmon hosts body image coaching, image consultations and various workshops. For more information on Jasmon or Size Fabulous, visit www.sizefabulous.com or follow her on Twitter at @SizeFabulous.

Q &A

It has been a wonderful year celebrating many accolades and developments inspired by our roster of 2013 cover women. We had unforgettable experiences with each cover woman and we know that feeling will continue into 2014, without a doubt. To celebrate the New Year, we caught up with each 2013 Syracuse Woman Magazine cover woman and asked them a few questions to get the holiday spirit glowing. Read on and enjoy!

JANUARY 2013 – Hilary DeCesare

Our January cover woman was traveling when we conducted this Q&A, but she did send some pleasant wishes our way. Happy holidays! FEBRUARY

FEBRUARY 2013 – Dr. Uzma Iqbal & Leisha Tedford run to!

DDING A WE VE TO YOU HA

1. From Uzma… Growing up in Pakistan, I celebrated Eid - the miz match celebration after a month of fasting used to be my favorite holiday. There is lots of food and one visits and meets up with loved ones. volunteer: rt... The kids get Eidi which is a small amount of money but really a ea H e Th From token of love which of course is very exciting as a kid because the Speaking more people you meet the more Eidi you get. After moving to the U.S., Thanksgiving has been my favorite holiday. It is the joy of being with family, friends and loved ones and sharing good food. Food is the glue that binds my family together. At each holiday gathering, food was the favorite topic of discussion, from “how much did the tomatoes cost?” to what’s the best in season fruit and who made the best dessert.

2. Since I was very young (over 45 years) Santa’s elves leave brand new pajamas and reindeer food at the house while we attend Christmas Eve mass. 3. My favorite color was purple as a child. One year, all my presents were wrapped in purple Addis Department Store boxes. 4. Malala Yousafzai, Hillary Clinton and Christiane Amanpour. april

2. We have been celebrating Thanksgiving since I moved to the U.S. 18 years ago. As our kids became older, we started a tradition of sitting together before dinner and opening our hearts to one another. 3. Each of us tries to think about what we are grateful for and what we think was hard or challenging for us in the past year. Some of the stories generated are priceless. Last year the struggles ranged from a family friend having to fight heart disease and his experience going through cardiac bypass surgery to my 6-year-old finding reading a challenge! 4. My mom, who taught me how to be strong in front of adversity. My grandmother, who taught me the wisdom of the world including how to love people unconditionally and one of my aunts who always modeled that you could win anyone’s heart with good food especially if it is made with love. 1. From Leisha… My favorite part of the holiday season is connecting with family and friends and sharing holiday traditions and celebrations. It seems to be the season of intentional connections! 2. Our longest holiday tradition is cooking together as a family. Whether it is making Christmas cookies or Thanksgiving desserts, our family has had fun over the generations cooking together. 3. With lots of memories it’s hard to pick just one, so I will have to go with the one that makes my family laugh every Thanksgiving. Almost 20 years ago, I became a vegan for the first time. During the family gathering at Thanksgiving, my contribution was a “Tofurkey.” I must admit it was the funniest little piece of “veganess” that I had ever seen! One bite and I knew, that Thanksgiving would never be the same. I thought it was just awful and my family roared at the concept of this funny little turkey wannna-be. Needless to say, I have never purchased one again! 4. II had to pick 4! The things we would talk about at this dinner party! Oprah Winfrey, Beth Moore, CoCo Chanel, and Mother Teresa!

MARCH 2013 – Julie Cecile

1. It is getting together with family and friends. Also, cutting down our Christmas tree is a favorite. Every year we go with our friends and their children to find the perfect Christmas tree.

Now that we’re all grown up, we decided to shift our tradition and now adopt a family (or two) in need. Each family provides all the necessities for them to have a special holiday — from clothes and toiletries to gifts for their children. It’s been a great experience and we love helping others celebrate the holiday, too. m .co mag man ewo cus yra w. s ww

3. I don’t know if one moment stands out, but my favorite part of the holiday season always includes driving around neighborhoods on Christmas Eve and looking at all of the lights — while listening to holiday music, of course. 4. This is a tough question… Let’s see, I would have to say Oprah, Hillary Clinton and my mom.

2. The longest family tradition I have is baking cookies. tler I cannot remember a Christmas growing up that I did u B a Lis not bake with my mother. We would spend several days cutting, baking, cooling, icing and decorating. (Oh, and eating a few broken ones too.) Her cookies were mini masterpieces. I cannot pretend to have her artistry, but I still give it my best. I put on holiday music, sip wine, bake cookies, and think of those long, cozy, creative days in Effie’s kitchen.

It starts at about noon with appetizers cheeses, mb brea st canc salad, pizza, calamari, shrimp, etc. then on to dinner er pasta (three different kinds to go with the different sauces), Italian wedding soup, lasagna, spinach ricotta pie, sausage peppers, etc., then desserts! We play games, yell, laugh and laugh some more. We don’t leave until very late until we are tired from eating and laughing. The year starts out with family and that is exactly how it should. 3. Share with us one favorite memorable moment from your holidays of years past. That would be when I was about 10 we were at my cousins on the west side and major storm blew through. The roads were hazardous so no one was to leave. We went to bed and I thought “if there is a Santa I will still have presents”. I woke up in the morning to a floor filled with gifts. Santa or the magic of love is real. My father and uncle drove in that storm to the North side to get those gifts, it took them 4 hours! I tell my kids this story when they get the there’s no such thing as Santa attitude, minus the drive out to get them. 4. Hmm, mine are not alive! Helen Keller, Jane Goodall and Mother Theresa.

2. Ever since we’ve been adults, my four sisters and I have watched Christmas movies and drank hot cocoa on Christmas Eve. We do not miss “It’s a Wonderful Life,” “The Preacher’s Wife” and now, “Love Actually”! 3. Several years ago while at mom’s for Christmas, the house across the street caught fire. Firefighters courageously fought the fire for hours and hours missing Christmas with their own families. It was humbling to see them risk their lives and a great honor to serve them Christmas dinner and homemade holiday cookies.

3. My favorite memory was the first holiday with my children in our apartment. We voted to pass on the Christmas tree, opting for our artificial ficus tree. It wasn’t an issue of affordability. As a family, we opted to donate the cost of a “live” tree to the local animal shelter. The “holiday” ficus tree was decorated throughout the holidays that year.

proposed to me. I had absolutely no idea he was planning to ask me to be his wife. We were getting ready to spend the evening with his mom, but he insisted I open a gift. How could I refuse? It was a small box, and I figured it was jewelry, but never in a million years did I think it was an engagement ring. We really hadn’t ever discussed marriage. But suddenly there was a beautiful diamond ring in my face, and Tim on one knee. We cried, we laughed, we hugged, we kissed. I said, “yes.” We cried some more but finally pulled ourselves together, so we could go spread the news to his family. e hopped in my Geo Tracker, which was parked in the garage. I threw it in reverse, stepped on the gas, and heard a thud, followed by the sound of breaking glass. In my excitement, I forgot to raise the garage door. The garage door was bashed in, the windows completely shattered, but the Tracker came through unscathed. All we could do was stare at each other in amazement and burst out laughing again. Best Christmas Eve ever!

2. Having a career in healthcare and co-parenting young children, I made a conscious decision that holidays were a season, not a day. Often, I would work the holiday…our children would spend the day with their father. Our tradition: we would travel a few weeks prior to the holiday and stay in a hotel with a pool and hot tub. We would participate in the festivities of that community. It required homework, theater, nativity pageants, museums, movies, etc. We were “Skipping Christmas” long before John Grisham. My daughter is 22 now, soon to be an RN.

3. One of my favorite memorable moments was sharing the holidays with some of our former football players. We were at Western Michigan University and were headed to a bowl game that year. So, many of our Florida players couldn’t go home for Christmas due to time constraints. We had several of the kids come over for dinner and then afterwards, our neighbor got out his 4-wheeler and attached a big sled to it and drove this Florida kids around the block in the snow for hours! They were like little kids playing in the snow for the very first time! I think Scott, Wolf, Elsa and I had more fun watching them than they had flying around in the snow. 4. My sisters: Vicki, Cassi and Kate. I miss them terribly each holiday season as we all live far from each other and don’t get to spend the holidays together as often. They are all inspiring to me in their own special way!

This year…

Spread holiday cheer at work!

BY KAYLA ISAACS The holidays are rolling in, and with that comes the excitement of snow and hot chocolate, the anxiety of finding enough presents for friends and family, and the prospect of taking a night to spend some quality party time with your colleagues. As an employee, attending such holiday work parties can be tricky as one juggles trying to relax and have fun while knowing that your boss is directly in sight. These celebrations come down to finding a balance between letting loose and keeping things classy all at once. If you are the designated party planner for your company’s upcoming holiday festivities, try out some different options that will not blow your allotted budget and will be sure to relieve some tension while ensuring you have a desk waiting for you come Monday. Take a company party to a new level by having a themed event. Select a theme at random or have everyone in the office vote. Either way, these parties take numerous directions that allow for new excitement in the workplace. As CNBC suggests, turn the office conference room into a snow globe to channel the holiday spirit, creating your own winter wonderland by turning on a fan and flying around packing peanuts. As this could get a bit messy — a cleanup crew is recommended — you could opt for a more traditional route by throwing a costume party. Having everyone dress up, whether for a masquerade theme or a Disney one, brings energy into the air. These parties can be held as separate events, at a restaurant or rented facility, but to keep things more low key, they can easily be held in the office as well. To keep things more casual and tamed at the office, go for a casual get together either during the day or after work hours have ended. Have each employee 18

bring in a baked good to share. There will be plenty of options in this no-fuss celebration that will draw employees together…who can say no to a tasty treat? To bring the office out-of-the-box and generate holiday competition, have a contest to see who can decorate their cubicle or office the most festively. Look to Pinterest for starting ideas, showing cubicle North Pole’s, giant presents, or anything shiny to highlight the new year. With this holiday celebration, each employee can have fun and get as into it as he or she would like. Once complete, it will be like browsing the neighborhood decorations without having to leave the office. Give the winner of the competition a prize, such as a gift card to a local restaurant, and voila, an easy way to bring holiday cheer to work! If your company has an annual party and you are looking for a way to spice it up, incorporate a photo booth into the mix. This can be something you rent out or an easy project to create: set up a backdrop, throw in a box of props, and find someone to play photographer. This is the ultimate party-maker and party favor all in one. To generate team bonding, find employees to be the night’s entertainment — with music, comedy, or any range of talent — performing independently or forming a group. It is a given that employee’s want to have some fun this holiday season and not embarrass themselves in front of colleagues or bosses. With easy and creative ideas, take your holiday work party from boring to show-stopping, bringing your coworkers together while giving them something more to look forward to as the holidays roll in.

Be Jolly...

Even if you’re single If you aren’t roasting chestnuts on an open fire with anyone special this year, it can be somewhat tricky to navigate through the holidays with all the mush and gush of the season playing out around you. Seriously -— if you have to hear Elvis singing how blue, blue, blue his Christmas will be without someone other than you, one more time, it will be enough to make you turn purple. It’s not that you’re a heartless scrooge. You’re happy for those who are snuggling up with their true love when the weather outside is frightful. You are genuinely sad for those who can’t be home for the holidays, especially due to circumstances such as illness or military service. Truth be told, you like your life, your job, and your community of friends who keep you connected, grounded, busy and fulfilled. But even though you’ve learned to live happily on your own, and carry on as you please while you enjoy the silent nights — there’s still something about the holidays that may make even the most joyful singletons feel a little melancholy. Look at the merry side: the fact that you’re single means you have made a lot of good decisions in your life. You may have dodged some bullets and rescued yourself from unhealthy relationships. Many of your friends who are in less than perfect relationships most likely envy you in more ways than you could imagine. Your single status is not a sign of failure, but more a testament to how strong you really are. There’s nothing you can’t do without a plus-one and be completely OK with, including attending holiday parties. This is because you, unlike others, refused to settle. So pat yourself on the back, girlfriend, you made Santa proud! Yet, no doubt that awesome feeling may deflate a little when you show up for your family holiday dinner and your mother starts expressing her “concern” for you, so sure you would be happier if you were with someone. This is when you remind yourself (and your mom) that being single during the holidays can be joyful. And here’s why: You don’t have to worry about figuring out what to buy your significant other, or his family members whom you may not really know (or even like). Because you saved a ton of money on gifts, you can now spend that money on yourself during those post-holiday sales or donate it to your favorite charity. You don’t have to argue over whose family to visit or split time between them; eating duplicate meals and feeling as if your stomach is going to explode by night’s end. You don’t have to pretend like you’re a fabulous cook. You can order Chinese takeout, crack open a bottle of chardonnay, curl up by the fire, watch a marathon of your favorite show and feel great about how genuinely amazing you really are. You can be the master of your own holiday traditions. You can do exactly what you want, how you want, when you want, or not at all. Besides, within less than 48 hours, the holidays will pass — at least for a week! Then you will then have to determine whether the thought of being alone at the stroke of midnight on New Year’s Eve is worse than kissing someone you’re not into or with whom you’re on a first date. Perhaps it’s better to go to the New Year’s party as a singleton, rocking that amazing outfit you bought for yourself with all the money you saved on holiday gifts for a significant other. And just like that, being single at the holidays seems simply magical.

Half Full ‘in btheares all’ name of beauty

SU alumna rediscovers her inner & outer beauty

Rebecca Twitchell, founder of half full and Syracuse University alumna, is taking the trust of her clients to a whole new level. The focus of a recent advertising campaign for one of the company’s newest Personal Development Forwards, Rebecca has admittedly “put herself out there” to remind women that they all have something special to offer to the world, whether they feel it yet or not. Designed by women, exclusively for women, the most recent in the half full Personal Development Forward series is titled, “Rediscovering Your Inner & Outer Beauty,” and highlights Rebecca’s biggest insecurity. “The best way, the only way, for me to really help others build confidence in how they feel inside and out is to be honest about my own insecurities,” Rebecca said. “My story is usually told at the beginning of a Forward to earn trust from the group. But this time, I knew I had to share it much earlier so the women attending this Forward will feel comfortable just signing up.” Born with Symbrachydactyly Syndrome (only two fully developed fingers on her left hand), Rebecca once struggled with adversity, feeling unattractive and personal insecurities. Her story is the backbone of the very existence of half full and she starts off every strategic planning session by sharing her experience of overcoming obstacles. It was in these moments of mutual trust and sharing with those in the room that she realized that there was more she could do to help others, not just in business, but in their personal lives. For more than a decade, half full has been known for facilitating retreats (called “Forwards” in half full lingo) to assist groups with strategic business and organization plans. Due to the success of these sessions, half full Clients have been looking for ways to apply that same strategic planning to their own lives. In response, half full added Personal Development Forwards to its repertoire so that individuals can work on their own personal development plans. Rebecca partnered with Krzystyna Caldarone, photographer and founder of Vintage Girl Studios, for the Women’s Forward, which provides a weekend retreat for women looking to rebuild confidence and move forward in life. The two met while discussing the vision for Vintage Girl Studios and immediately knew she wanted to develop a Forward with her to help women rediscover their inner and outer beauty. “We spend so much time worrying about our looks that we lose focus on how beautiful we really are,” Rebecca said. “If you spend your whole life wrapped up in insecurities like this, it becomes incredibly difficult to move forward personally and even professionally. But, when you accept your own personal uniqueness and work with it rather than against it, you will feel beautiful, build confidence and move forward in your life.” This is why Krzystyna’s involvement is imperative. “Not only is she an amazing photographer, but also has a very caring way of encouraging and empowering woman through her sessions,” Rebecca said. “The two businesses make a perfect duet.” This year’s Women’s Forward “Rediscovering Your Inner & Outer Beauty” was held in October in Boston. Another half full Forward will be held this spring with a date that will be announced soon. Last month, women experienced workshops designed to work on their inner beauty as well as participate in creative Vintage Girl Studios sessions to accentuate their outer beauty. No matter what area of a woman’s life that becomes enhanced after the Forward, the goal is to leave ready to take the next step. “When you accept your own personal uniqueness and work with it rather than against it, you will feel beautiful, build confidence and move forward in your life.”
