DIRECTOR'S NOTE

Catholicism waged a bloody genocide in Spain.

Then, via Spanish ships, Catholicism waged a bloody genocide in the Americas.

All of Latin America, including California, Arizona, New Mexico, and Texas, was birthed in the wake of that war.

(Note that “Latin America” is a continent-and-a-half worth of people. Our cultures and racial backgrounds are vastly different from one another.)

It can never be assumed that two people with Spanish surnames share cultural similarities. Yet, whenever I—a mixed-race, multi-ethnic, multi-cultural “Latino” raised in the Midwest— interact with any other Latin person living in the States, we inevitably share commonalities in cuisine, music, the centrality of family, and our shared experiences of religious trauma.

I would posit that all of these commonalities came from Spain, but none so much as the brutal depiction of a God who subjugates through punishment and pain.

When we share stories about our upbringings, it seems like we all had the same parents:

Because the church wants our parents to be police.

That was the terrifying provocation that sparked our process for Bernarda Alba. Yet this astonishing group of young people used it to build a resilient community, a sense of collective bravery, and a vitality that can only come from a mutual desire for liberation.

Endless gratitude to my creative partner Diego Alejandro González and to our collaborators Felipe, Aldo, Aliana, Marisa, Jacob, Stuart, Eleanor, Ralph, Zeke, Carmen, Henry, Jacqui, Kathleen, Alec, Mara, Polly, Lucía, Rachel, Tess, Maisey, Banji, and Kiki for facilitating this experiment.

Thank you to Lorca who penned this play, and to my hero Graciela Daniele who lovingly transformed it into musical theater.

And thank you to the real Bernarda Alba and to every Bernarda in Spain, Latin America, and elsewhere—I want your liberation most of all.
