NATIONAL POLICY UPDATES A distributed analysis of federal carbon pricing under a healthy environment and a healthy economy The Parliamentary Budget Officer released a report that provides a distributional analysis of federal carbon pricing under the Government’s A Healthy Environment and a Healthy Economy (HEHE) plan. Under the HEHE climate plan, the federal carbon levy
is set to rise by $15 per year from $50 per tonne in 2022 until it reaches $170 per tonne in 2030. When losses in economic efficiency are added to the fiscal impacts of federal carbon pricing, the net carbon cost increases for all households in Ontario, Manitoba, Saskatchewan and Alberta. Industry group responds to Stellantis and other electric vehicle battery supply chain announcements Several Canadian Battery Task Force members have made statements in response to the recent series of electric vehicle battery supply chain developments in Canada. That includes a recent announcement that Stellantis and LG Energy Solutions, together with the federal, Ontario and Windsor governments, will invest over $5 billion in Canada’s first large-scale battery manufacturing plant. The Canadian Battery Task Force is an industry-led initiative created to deliver advice to Canadian governments on how to develop a domestic battery supply chain. Read their statements here.
