FRIDA KAHLO IS INDISPUTABLY THE MOST FAMOUS MEXICAN ARTIST OF ALL TIME.

6

Her work always combines her inner world, marked by tragic events and a passionate love life - with the influences of Mexican popular culture. She is also a symbol of feminism, independence and all that is freedom and perseverance. London and Belgravia pay homage to this multifaceted twentieth-century artist with two exceptional events. From 16th June - 4th November 2018, the Victoria and Albert Museum, is hosting Frida Kahlo: Making Her Self Up. The exhibition presents an extraordinary collection of roughly 200 personal items from the Blue House / Casa Azul, the house located in Coyoacán, where the painter was born, grew up and eventually died. An opportunity to explore her life through letters, jewels, cosmetics, medicine and medical corsets, and her ever-present colourful outfits; a varied collection of personal objects which have been locked away for 50 years and have neverbefore been exhibited outside Mexico. A visual tale of her personal story, next to photographs and videos, you can admire Frida's identifying style: 22 distinctive and colourful Tehuana garments, preColumbian necklaces, rebozos - traditional Mexican shaws, huipiles, long skirts with flounces, examples of intricately hand-painted corsets and prosthetics that bear witness to the effects of the devastating accident that perennially marred her existence. A highlight will be the resplandor, a lace headdress worn by the women of the matriarchal society from the Isthmus of Tehuantepec region in Southern Mexico, paired with a self-portrait of Kahlo wearing it. The third edition of Belgravia in Bloom will take place from May 19-26th, coinciding with the Royal Horticultural Society Chelsea Flower Show, this year it draws inspiration from the V&A exhibition on Frida. Boutiques and bars in Elizabeth Street, Motcomb Street, Pimlico Road and Eccleston Yards will create original and colourful floral installations. Furthermore, Grosvenor, partner of the V&A Museum, will organise a competition to reward the best floral exhibitions, which will be evaluated by the judges of the RHS and by the public through social media. The event, which will last a week,

"FRIDA KAHLO: MAKING HER SELF UP" AT V&A MUSEUM

marks the official opening of Frida's Parlor: an interactive installation in Elizabeth Street, inspired by Kahlo, featuring an inclusive social space echoing the iconic Blue House. Frida's Parlour will host a series of creative workshops, from Frida-inspired floral headdress-making sessions to self-portraiture classes, and a Wallpaper Room entirely covered with the green floral background found in the iconic photograph by Nickolas Muray, where it will also be possible to take selfies. Finally, during Frida’s Belgravia in Bloom, one can admire a larger than life homage to the artist in Eccleston Yards – a new hub for independent and creative businesses in Belgravia - where a vibrant mural will feature a headdress decorated with live Mexican-style exotic flowers. IT'S ALL ABOUT THE ROYALS 12

BRITISH MONARCHY ENTHUSIASTS AND AVID READERS OF THE TABLOID SOCIAL PAGES HAVE BEEN EAGERLY AWAITING THIS MOMENT SINCE THE FIRST RUMOURS: THE ROYAL WEDDING BETWEEN PRINCE HENRY OF WALES (PRINCE HARRY) AND MS. MEGHAN MARKLE. FROM ROYAL WATCHERS AND ORDINARY SUBJECTS OF THE QUEEN TO PEOPLE LIVING FAR BEYOND THE BORDERS OF ENGLAND, EVERYONE IS CURIOUS ABOUT THE INTIMATE DETAILS OF THE NUPTUALS: THE DRESSES, LOCATION, GUESTS, ENTERTAINMENT AND, OF COURSE, THE JEWELLERY.

WHAT MOST PEOPLE DO NOT KNOW, HOWEVER, IS THAT THE UNITED KINGDOM IS THE ONLY MONARCHY TO STILL POSSESS AND UTILIZE AN INTACT SET OF CROWN JEWELS.

Queen Elizabeth II also has one of the most extensive private collections in Europe, containing a staggering multitude of tiaras, earrings, necklaces and brooches. She called her grandmother Queen Mary’s brooch made from pieces of the Cullinan diamond, “Granny’s Chips” - with an evident sense of humour. Certain items are loaned to other members of the royal family for official appearances – some of the most iconic pictures of Princess Diana show her wearing necklaces and tiaras from the collection. Royal watchers are keen to see how Prince Harry’s bride-to-be, Meghan Markle, will wear her gems after they wed. For the moment, Meghan favours a subtle contemporary look, with stacked gold rings, minimal earrings and the occasional off-the-shelf piece from Cartier. Her engagement ring, designed by Prince Harry, incorporates a diamond from Botswana, where the couple fell in love, and two smaller stones from Princess Diana’s collection, which her sons inherited for their future wives. Kate Middleton famously wears Diana’s sapphire engagement ring made by Garrard, long the go-to jeweler for the royal family. While jewellery was in the past intrinsically linked to politics, today’s royals are just as likely to use it as a means of expression. “We are in a much more relaxed, less formal society,” explains Amy Burton, design director at London’s vintage and contemporary jewellery dealer, Hancocks, which has held several royal warrants. “For formal occasions they still very much respect tradition and wear the heirloom pieces and pieces from the Royal Collection. But now for less formal occasions they use it more to express their own personality.” Princess Diana epitomized a new attitude, finding creative ways to wear historic pieces. “When Princess Diana wore the Art Deco emerald choker as a bandeau across her forehead in 1985, that was quite a different way to wear jewellery,” says Burton. “I don’t think many other royals have stepped out of their comfort

TIARAS, EARRINGS, NECKLACES AND BROOCHES

zone with jewels like Princess Diana did.” But a love of jewellery is nothing new. Queen Mary adored her gems. The late Princess Margaret inherited her grandmother’s taste for the extravagant – as well as several items from her collection. Elizabeth’s rebellious younger sister married a photographer, moved in society circles and regularly appeared on best-dressed lists. “She had some great taste in jewellery, quite bold and daring,” says Burton. As well as jewels from leading houses like Cartier, she supported avant-garde British jewellers like Andrew Grima. For her wedding, she acquired the fairytale Poltimore Tiara, created by Garrard in the 1870s, which sold at Christie’s in 2006 for $1.7 million. R OYA L S

ITALIAN ORIGINS 16

CHEF'S TRAVELOGUE IL PAMPERO’S CHEF CLAUDIO COVINO AND RESTAURANT MANAGER STEFANO ROSSOMANDO DO NOT BETRAY THEIR ITALIAN ORIGINS, AND THEIR RECENT TRIP TO ITALY TO DISCOVER ANCIENT TRADITIONS WAS A JOURNEY OF REDISCOVERY. BY ILARIA MAGGI © ROBERT POPPER

"Claudio and I were invited to Benevento, in Irpinia, for the traditional killing of the pig,” says Stefano "a very ancient tradition which brings the whole family together, to be lived within a close community. As a spectator, it is a unique moment that must be seen in person and experienced intimately." Claudio Covino and Stefano Rossomando (chef and restaurant manager at Il Pampero at The Hari Hotel) were privileged enough to be invited at the Tenuta Santiuoria, an estate in the harsh and mountainous heartland of Campania, to observe this ritual. While there, they also took the opportunity to discover the surrounding vineyards and the estate’s own production: "a young winery, characterized by very fine biodynamic wines”. The two returned from their trip with numerous memories, a few new suggestions, as well as a new dish, inspired by southern Italian cuisine, that can be found on our new spring menu: “The zuppa forte partenopea (literally “strong Neapolitan soup”) is a very particular dish to recommend and explain to our guests," says Chef Claudio, "it is a stew in which pork entrails are the main ingredient; therefore, a dish with intense flavour, but very easy to like.” Il Pampero offers numerous culinary proposals with regional influences, in particular from Southern Italy; The menu is seasonal, and changes every three or four months, except for a few evergreen favourites that are always loved by our guests, such as the Milanese. COCKTAIL TIME THE BAR AT THE HARI IS A UNIQUE PLACE AT ANY MOMENT OF THE DAY OR NIGHT. BY EDWARD KING

TA S T E

“I’M EXCITED TO BE STARTING AS THE NEW BAR MANAGER AT THE HARI. I AM LOOKING FORWARD TO ADDING MY OWN UNIQUE TWISTS TO THE DRINKS LIST AND WORKING WITH THE VERY TALENTED TEAM ACROSS THE HOTEL.” JAMES HUNT, BAR MANAGER OF THE THE HARI.

Maybe it’s the ambience, refined yet warm and welcoming, maybe it’s the people who are friendly just to the right degree, maybe it’s simply the excellent drinks. Whatever the reason you chose to come to The Bar, James Hunt, the new bar manager, will make it an even more special moment. Be it for an aperitif before hitting Il Pampero for dinner (or any other of the great restaurants in the area), for a great cocktail after dinner with friends, or for a romantic afternoon drink with one’s companion, in the magical Garden Terrace, you really do not need any excuse to settle down in the Dedon chairs, surrounded by the reassuring velvet in neutral tones, which is the dominant colour of the bar, and let the sophisticated ambience of The Hari take over. "We are thrilled to welcome James Hunt to the team at The Hari. He has true showmanship and will inject great personality” says Andrew Coney, General Manager of The Hari. In his list of novelty cocktails one which captures our attention is Belgravia in Bloom, with lemon juice, blue Curacao, Lavender syrup and Monkey 47. Among the signature cocktails, the most loved: is The Hari, with Jensen Gin, Masala Chai, Honey and Gold as well as The Hari Mule, with Gray Goose vodka, Limoncello, Ginseng and Ginger beer. There is also a carefully selected choice of Haritinis, as a nod to Aron Harilela, CEO of the Harilela Group and owner of The Hari.

THE ART OF SCENT YOU CAN EVEN SMELL THE EXQUISITE FRAGRANCE SEVERAL STEPS AWAY FROM THE ENTRANCE: THE ATELIER OF RACHEL VOSPER AND HER ART OF CANDLE MAKING.

STIR MEMORIES

BY SARAH JONES

AT E L I E R

WHEN DID YOU FIRST BECOME INTERESTED IN CANDLE MAKING AND HOW DID YOU BEGIN THIS PROJECT? IT WAS A CHANCE ENCOUNTER ON A BARBADOS BEACH BACK IN 1994 THAT LED TO MY FIRST FORAY INTO THE WORLD OF WAX. I WAS ASKED TO HELP OUT IN SOMEONE’S STUDIO AND JUST FELL IN LOVE WITH THE WHOLE PROCESS AT FIRST POUR AND ENDED UP BUYING THE COMPANY. MY SIX-MONTH TRIP EXTENDED TO FOUR YEARS AS I BUILT UP A SUCCESSFUL BUSINESS AND IT SPARKED A PASSION THAT WOULD LEAD TO THE CREATION OF MY OWN SIGNATURE BRAND AND OPENING MY BELGRAVIA FLAGSHIP BOUTIQUE IN 2011. YOU WILL BE CREATING BESPOKE DIFFUSERS FOR THE HARI TO GIVE THE HOTEL A SIGNATURE SCENT, ANY INSIGHT INTO THIS? THE INTERIOR SPACE AT THE HARI IS WARM AND INTIMATE, SO WE NEEDED TO CREATE A SCENT THAT ENCAPSULATES THIS, WHICH I ACHIEVED BY COMBINING DARK FOREST ROSE WITH CLEMENTINE AND WARMING CINNAMON MUSK. MID NOTES OF GREEN PINE, FLECKS OF GERANIUM AND NEROLI ADD DEPTH TO THE SMOOTH AND LUXURIOUS SANDALWOOD IN THE BASE. WHAT INSPIRES YOU WHEN YOU CREATE A CANDLE? AS SCENT HAS THE POWER TO HELP STIR MEMORIES AND THE EMOTIONS THEY BRING, I DRAW ON THIS FEELING AS INSPIRATION TO RECREATE DIFFERENT EXPERIENCES FOR MY FRAGRANCE LIBRARY AND BESPOKE SCENT PARCELS FOR CORPORATE CLIENTS. I OFFER A BESPOKE SERVICE AND WORK WITH A NUMBER OF PRIVATE CLIENTS WHO OFTEN WANT ME TO CUSTOMISE A SIGNATURE SCENT ESPECIALLY FOR THEM. WHEN CHOOSING A FRAGRANCE, I ALWAYS START BY ASKING THEM TO DESCRIBE THEIR FAVOURITE SMELL, SUCH AS A PARENT'S COLOGNE OR A FAVOURITE HOLIDAY DESTINATION AND OFTEN FIND THESE MEMORIES GENERATE A COMPLEX MIX OF NOSTALGIC EMOTIONS. AT YOUR STORE IN BELGRAVIA, YOU RUN CANDLE MAKING COURSES, COULD YOU TELL US MORE ABOUT THIS? CANDLE MAKING IS A WONDERFUL WAY TO SPEND AN AFTERNOON. WE RUN GROUP COURSES FOR 6 PEOPLE. THE COURSE GIVES A GREAT INSIGHT INTO THE HISTORY AND ART OF CANDLE MAKING. GUESTS LEAVE THE WORKSHOP SMELLING DIVINE AND WITH THEIR VERY OWN HAND MADE ONE WICK CANDLE. CHAMPAGNE IS ALSO INCLUDED – SO THERE HAVE BEEN A FEW WONKY WICKS ALONG THE WAY. DO YOU LOVE TO TEACH? AND WHAT ARE PEOPLE MOST INTERESTED IN? YES, I LOVE BEING ABLE TO PASS ON SOME OF MY KNOWLEDGE AND EXPERIENCE. ALL SORTS OF PEOPLE TAKE THE COURSES, SOME JUST WANT TO HAVE AN EXPERIENCE WITH A GROUP OF FRIENDS, WHILE OTHERS ARE INTERESTED IN HOW THE SCENTS ARE DEVELOPED AND THE TRADITIONAL POURING METHODS WE USE. IN YOUR STORE, THE CANDLES ARE DISPLAYED AMONGST ANTIQUE MIRRORS, HAND-CRAFTED POTTERY AND ARTISANAL OBJECTS, UNDERLYING THE TRADITIONAL NATURE OF YOUR CRAFT… I DESIGNED THE INTERIORS OF THE SHOP MYSELF – I WANTED TO CREATE A SPACE THAT IS WARM AND INVITING, SO I CURATED THE LOOK OF THE SHOP WITH A MIXTURE OF ARTISAN CLASSICS, CONTEMPORARY PIECES AND ANTIQUES I HAVE FOUND ALONG THE WAY. HOW ABOUT THE BESPOKE REFILL SERVICE YOU OFFER? HOW DID THIS IDEA COME ABOUT? I HAVE ALWAYS LOVED THE IDEA OF BREATHING NEW LIFE INTO BEAUTIFUL OBJECTS THAT MIGHT HAVE BEEN FORGOTTEN AT THE BACK OF A CUPBOARD SUCH AS AN ANTIQUE CRYSTAL OR A FAVOURITE VASE. MY REFILL SERVICE ALLOWS CLIENTS TO BRING BACK ANY VESSEL TO BE REFILLED AND ENJOYED TIME AND TIME AGAIN. YOU NAME IT, WE HAVE REFILLED IT! WHAT DO YOU DO IN YOUR SPARE TIME IN LONDON? IF I AM NOT WORKING I AM SPENDING TIME WITH MY DAUGHTER ISABEL. WE LIKE TO VISIT ONE OF THE PLAYGROUNDS IN EITHER BELGRAVE SQUARE GARDENS OR HOLLAND PARK OR FEED THE DUCKS IN KENSINGTON GARDENS. I VISIT THE V&A FOR INSPIRATION AND DURING THE SUMMER MONTHS THE SERPENTINE LIDO IS A PERFECT HANG-OUT WITH FRIENDS AND A PICNIC. AND OF COURSE, I HAVE BEEN KNOWN TO ENJOY A COCKTAIL AT THE HARI BAR WITH MY TEAM AFTER A DAY AT THE CANDLE SHOP!

"PARDON ME IF I INVENTED THE BEATLES". LEGEND HAS IT THAT LUCK KNOCKED ON HIS DOOR WHEN A YOUNG MAN ENTERED HIS RECORD SHOP AND ASKED FOR THE RECORD “MY BONNIE”, BY THE BEATLES. SINCE HE DID NOT HAVE IT, NOR HAD HE EVER HEARD OF THEM BEFORE, HE DECIDED TO FIND OUT WHO THEY WERE AND ENDED UP GOING TO ONE OF THEIR LIVE SESSIONS. THIS WAS THE START OF A VERY LONG AND FRUITFUL COLLABORATION BETWEEN THE MUSIC ENTREPRENEUR AND THE MEMBERS OF THE YOUNG BAND. THE REST IS HISTORY.

Maurice Joseph Micklewhite Jr was born in London in 1933, son of a fish market porter and a cook, and his cockney accent has become an unmistakable trademark. He decided to become an actor at the age of 10. At the beginning of the Sixties he changed his stage name from Michael White to Michael Caine, inspired by a poster of the film "The mutiny of the Caine". "I was in a phone booth on the phone with my agent who asked me to choose a different name as my stage name was taken" he says. "There was this poster in front of me and that’s how I came up with the name, by chance ". In 1964, always by chance, he got his first lead role in the film Zulu. In his career he has acted in over a hundred films, winning two Oscars and numerous awards. He is considered one of the greatest interpreters of English cinema with Mairi Mackay of CNN correctly saying "Michael Caine has been personifying British cool since the swinging Sixties”.

"Growing up in London in the 1950s was predictable and dull. My generation demanded a new beginning ». The unmistakable voice belongs to Michael Caine. As he speaks, fragments of vintage videos dart across the screen: the Beatles stepping off their private plane, boys dancing the twist, girls with bare legs and short hair, student parades, a very young Mick Jagger arrested by the police. It's the Sixties. It is the legendary Swinging London, told in first person by Caine in his documentary, "My Generation". "All of a sudden there were a few people in London who were considered the most interesting and fascinating on the planet. The old rule book was torn up and thrown away. It was our time. The best time of our lives ». Revolution abounds: in the streets, at universities, in people’s homes. Everything is possible in London; it’s the Sixties. Mary Quant invents the miniskirt and a 17-year-old hairdresser, Leslie Hornby, nicknamed Twiggy (breadstick), wears it and is transformed into an overnight style icon: Quant’s boutique Bazaar, on Kings Road, suddenly has more visitors than Buckingham Palace. 50TH ANNIVERSARY OF 1968

Pirate radios broadcast pop music day and night and at the legendary Ad Lib club on Leicester Square, The Beatles and The Stones perform regularly. In his beauty salon, not far from Carnaby Street, Vidal Sassoon invents the bob haircut, finally freeing women from hairspray and hair curlers. David Bailey, a charming East End youngster, puts his camera round his neck and starts taking pictures, learning the craft as he goes along. His images end up in Vogue and he becomes a celebrity. Michael Caine gets his first part in a film. In this unique documentary, the main characters of those years recount their life and stories in first person with Michael Caine interviewing the likes of the Who, Paul McCartney, Twiggy, Marianne Faithfull, Mary Quant, David Hockney, Sandie Shaw, Jean Shrimpton, Keith Richards and David Bailey, with Strawberry Fields Forever and other iconic hits of the time playing in the background. We find ourselves face-to-face with a generation that has chosen to be free. A group of young rebels, full of hope, who changed the world through music, fashion, art, cinema and colours. "In theory we were told we had to respect rich people, lords, those who had power, in short, the establishment - says Caine -. At school they taught us to respect our superiors. But I never understood who they were. It was the first time the future was shaped by young people».
