HEAD

CHRIS CELANO

Last season, Celano and the Golden Lions had the most successful campaign in program history, earning their first ever NCAA East Region Championship and appearance in the NCAA Division II World Series. The Golden Lions also would set a single season program record for victories with 35, which included a win over No. 1 nationally ranked UC San Diego. After winning the 2008 ECC Coach of the Year Award, Celano added more awards in 2009 including Field Turf Division II National Coach of the Year and ABCA/Diamond Sports Company East Region Coach of the Year.

COACH

In Celano’s five years at the helm of the program, the Golden Lions have put together five consecutive winning seasons while winning at least 22 games each season. Three of his five squads have also advanced to NCAA Tournament play. Celano has also coached three players that have been selected in the MLB First Year Player Draft, two AllAmericans, and twenty different players that have been named to an All-Conference team. A 1994 graduate of Ward Melville High School, Celano received his Bachelor’s Degree in English Literature from SUNY New Paltz in 1999. After a successful college career as a left-handed pitcher, he went on to play professionally in Rimini, Italy where he was a member of the 1999 Italian League Champion Rimini Pirates. Upon returning home, Chris signed with the Sioux Falls Canaries of the Northern League and spent the 2000 and 2001 seasons in the states. In 2000, Celano joined the Dowling College coaching staff as an assistant and served as the Director of Sports Information from 2002-2004, before resigning to accept the head coach position. SEASON PREVIEW GOLDEN LIONS’ BASEBALL

AFTER REACHING THE DIVISION II COLLEGE WORLD SERIES FOR THE FIRST TIME IN PROGRAM HISTORY IN 2009, THE DOWLING COLLEGE GOLDEN LIONS ARE POISED TO MAKE A SERIOUS RUN AT DEFENDING THEIR EAST REGION TITLE IN 2010. Dowling will return seven starters and four pitchers who tossed more than 45 innings including Daktronics and the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association National Pitcher of the Year, Gabriel Duran (Brooklyn, NY). In all, 20 players return, while 11 talented newcomers are added to the mix. The Golden Lions will open their 2010 schedule with a thirteen game nonconference homestand, starting with three games against perennial East Region power, Franklin Pierce University on February 20 and 21. Other teams Dowling will take on during the season opening stretch include Stonehill, Bloomfield, Pace, New Haven, Southern New Hampshire, and fellow NCAA Tournament participant, Dominican. The Golden Lions will then embark on their annual southern trip to Boca Raton, Florida from March 12 – 16. Five games fill the slate in Florida with contests against Nyack, Southern Connecticut State, U-Mass Lowell, and an East Region Championship rematch with Adelphi. Due to the defection of two schools from the conference, East Coast Conference action will consist of five game series against each rival institution in 2010. Conference play begins on March 19 against Queens College and wraps up on April 25 against Bridgeport. Non-conference match-ups against former conference foe Concordia and Pace will finish off the 2010 schedule.

INFIELD All four starters from the 2009 infield return for another season in Dowling navy blue and gold. Leading the way in the veteran infield is First Team All-Conference and Daktronics All-Region selection, Colin Barnathan (Massapequa, NY). Barnathan finished tied for the team lead with a .314 batting average, to go along with 28 RBI and 19 stolen bases. Daniel Pembroke (Shoreham-Wading River, NY) and Eddie Squeri (Shirley, NY), both All-Conference selections in 2009, return to man their first base and shortstop positions respectively. Pembroke led the team in home runs and RBI’s last season and Squeri, an outstanding defender, also finished second on the team with 29 RBI’s. Joe Trainor (Massapequa, NY) rounds out the returning starters, after starting in 52 games at second base a season ago. Other players who return include Erik Cabrera (Ronkonkoma, NY) and Peter

6

Scianna (Chicago, IL). Cabrera, who can also play the outfield, was a key reserve in 2009, appearing in 35 games and finishing with a .253 batting average. Newcomers who will look to earn playing time in the infield include Sean Craig (Rocky Point, NY), Kevin Kerman (Mastic, NY), and Steve Morse (Commack, NY). Craig, who has above average speed, can play both infield positions. Kerman and Morse are two versatile infielders, who along with Scianna will add depth to the infield position. Dowling’s biggest hole to fill will come behind the plate after the graduation of four year starter and Tampa Bay Rays’ 50th round draft pick, David Wendt. Taylor Bargiacchi (Chester, NJ), who hit .352 in 54 at-bats and threw out 33% of attempted basestealers in 2009, looks to capture the starting position. Daniel Masiello (Staten Island, NY), a strong armed catcher will team up with Briarcliffe transfer, Steve Shea (East Islip, NY), to add depth to the catching position behind Bargiacchi.

OUTFIELD All-Conference First Team selection Frank Intagliata (Franklin Square, NY) returns to lead the crop of outfielders, after tying for the team lead in batting average in 2009. Intagliata will look to spark the top of the Golden Lions’ batting order after finishing last season with a .314 batting average. Juniors Ralph Tufano (Staten Island, NY) and Brian Ferguson (Ronkonkoma, NY) also return to roam the outfield. Tufano, who has also spent time as a designated hitter, finished last season with a .257 batting average while Ferguson looks to continue to be an on-base machine after coming in 7th in all of Division II with 19 hit-by-pitches a season ago. Joel Duverge (Brooklyn, NY) will vie to earn more playing time in 2010 after making 35 appearances as a reserve in 2009. Freshman Joe Candela (East Quoge, NY), an All-League player from Westhampton HS who can also play third base, will see time in the outfield and infield during his freshman campaign.

PITCHING STAFF The strength of the Golden Lions looks to once again be the pitching staff after the team led all of Division II in ERA by more than half a run with a 2.30 mark. Nine pitchers will return to a group that only lost two pitchers

who threw more than 20 innings. The staff will be anchored once again by junior righthander, Gabriel Duran. Duran returns after an outstanding sophomore season in which he set the program’s single season record for wins and earned a long list of awards including being named a First Team All-American by three different publications. The righty from Brooklyn, NY, finished the 2009 season with a 10-2 record (including a no-hitter with 14 strikeouts against Felician College), a 1.30 ERA, and 83 strikeouts in 89.1 innings. Marc Rutledge (Ridge, NY) and Nicholas Albero (New Rochelle, NY) will take turns in the starting rotation and look to build upon solid freshman campaigns. Rutledge finished 18th in Division II with a 2.08 ERA while Albero’s 1.46 ERA over 49.1 innings would have ranked 5th nationally if not for narrowly missing the minimum innings qualification. Tim Comiskey (Great River, NY), a U-Mass transfer with a wealth of experience, and Andrew Smith (Sound Beach, NY), a Hartford transfer, will look to make an immediate impact on the starting rotation. Senior Andrew Varela (Brooklyn, NY), who finished 2009 with a 2-0 record with a 2.76 ERA, could also see time as a starter or reliever. The bullpen will be led by senior lefty Buddy Cipoletti (West Islip, NY). Cipoletti made 20 appearances last season and was named the NCAA East Regional Most Outstanding Player after allowing one run over 15.2 innings in the tournament. Joe Trainor, who has spent time as the closer over the past two seasons, will look to reprise that role once again in 2010 in addition to his infield duties. Justin Brooks (West Sand Lake, NY) returns to the relief corps after missing all of 2009 after elbow surgery, while Mike Courtney (Bronx, NY) and Anthony De La Rosa (Brooklyn, NY) will fight for innings. Newcomers in the Golden Lions bullpen include transfer Michael Gilroy (Shoreham-Wading River, NY), Chris Mendoza (Ronkonkoma, NY), and P.J. Lenz (Greenlawn, NY). Gilroy will compete for innings during his first season as a Golden Lion, while Mendoza and Lenz will add depth to the staff.

COMMUNITY SERVICE

Community service was the highlight of the 2008-09 season as the Golden Lions continued to volunteer their time for many different causes while setting a few records in the process. Dowling Athletics once again joined Keep Islip Clean (KIC), an affiliate of Keep America Beautiful, for the third straight year. Starting in early October, all 17 athletic teams got together and spread out to clean the streets and parks of the local community. Throughout the rest of the year, Dowling’s varsity teams went out individually and dedicated a day to picking up debris and trash in the sections surrounding the College, helping beautify the area Dowling calls home. KIC, founded in 1989, is a nonprofit organization that focuses on beautification of the Islip Township that encompasses the 18 hamlets. For the fourth straight year, every Golden Lions team also participated in the Dowling College Fall and Spring Blood drives. During each of the two blood drives, over 100 student-athletes, coaches and staff gave blood. Also, members of each team that couldn’t give blood

16

contributed by having friends or family members donate for them. After taking part in the department wide Keep Islip Clean initiative during the fall semester, the baseball team will once again team up with Keep Islip Clean during the spring semester to clean the areas surrounding Dowling’s campus. The squad will also partake in a fundraiser for multiple sclerosis and have free youth clinics after selected home games during the 2010 season. Through various initiatives including selling “stars” and hosting events such as the Wishmaker’s Fall Classic and “Pack the Gym” night, the student-athletes also embarked on a Make-A-Wish fundraising campaign which raised over $17,000 for the Foundation, the most out of any Division II institution in NCAA history. Through the generous efforts of teams and individuals with Dowling College Athletics, the “Building Champions” motto continues to help develop the local community and beyond.

2009 SEASON REVIEW

THE 2009 SEASON WILL GO DOWN AS THE MOST SUCCESSFUL CAMPAIGN IN PROGRAM HISTORY TO DATE FOR THE DOWLING COLLEGE BASEBALL TEAM. The season got off to a rough start with the Golden Lions dropping their first two games, including being no-hit by two Franklin Pierce pitchers in the season opener. However, the team bounced back to win 9 out of their next 10 games, including another no-hitter by sophomore Gabriel Duran (Brooklyn, NY) against Felician on February 28. Duran struck out 14 Golden Falcons in his first appearance of the season, a sign of things to come for the 5’10” right hander. After a mid-season lull which saw the Golden Lions drop five out of seven games to bring their record to 14-10, a winning streak would follow as the team won 13 of their final 16 games to finish the regular season in third place in the East Coast Conference. After a first round victory over Concordia, the Golden Lions eventually reached the championship game of the tournament. With two victories needed over rival Adelphi to capture the title, Dowling fell 11-0 in the first game to end their championship hopes. After a strong regular season and an appearance in the conference tournament championship game, the Golden Lions earned an at-large berth in the NCAA East Regional Tournament for the 6th time in eight seasons. In the tournament held at Franklin Pierce University, Dowling would once again be matched up with Adelphi in the first round. The Panthers would win yet again by a score of 8-1 to send the Golden Lions into the loser’s bracket. With their season on the line in each game, Dowling defeated Wilmington 3-2 and scored three runs in the bottom of the 9th to down No. 1 seed Dominican 4-3 to advance to the final of the tournament. In a bit of deja vu, Adelphi was the opponent the Golden Lions would have to defeat twice on the final day to capture a championship once again.

After making their first ever trip to the World Series, the Golden Lions finished the season with a 35-18 record. The 35 victories were a single season program record, eclipsing the 34 victories of the 2004 squad. Numerous members of the team also earned many individual honors on the year. Gabriel Duran led the way after finishing the year with a single season record in victories after compiling a 10-2 record. Duran also finished third in the nation with a 1.30 ERA over 89.2 innings, while also tallying 83 strikeouts and holding opponents to a .150 batting average against (45for-301). His phenomenal season earned Duran a long list of honors including being named a First Team All-American by Daktronics, Rawlings/American Baseball Coaches Association, and the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association. He would also earn the National Pitcher of the Year Award from both Daktronics and the NCBWA. Other awards he earned were ECAC, Daktronics, Rawlings/ABCA, and NCBWA East Region Pitcher of the Year, Daktronics All-East Region First Team, ECAC East Region All-Star Team, NCBWA All-East Region First Team, Rawlings/ABCA All-East Region First Team, East Coast Conference Pitcher of the Year, and ECC All-Conference First Team. Six other members of the team earned All-Conference honors. Colin Barnathan (Massapequa, NY), Frank Intagliata (Franklin Square, NY), and Daniel Pembroke were First Team members and David Wendt, Eddie Squeri (Shirley, NY), and Kevin McCormack (Islip, NY) were all Second Team honorees. Barnathan was the only other member of the squad to make an All-Region team, as he earned a spot on the Daktronics East Region Second Team after finishing with a .314 batting average, 28 RBI’s, and 19 stolen bases.

Behind Buddy Cipoletti (West Islip, NY), who threw a complete game shut out in the first start of his career, Dowling forced a decisive game by beating the Panthers 4-0 in the first game of the championship. In a nail-bitter, freshman Marc Rutledge (Ridge, NY) matched zeroes with Adelphi’s ace through five innings. In the top of the 6th inning, Dowling pushed across a run on a sacrifice fly off the bat of Daniel Pembroke (Wading River, NY) to take a 1-0 lead. Rutledge would keep the Panthers off the board for another 1.2 innings before ace Gabriel Duran was called upon to save the game. With two outs in the bottom of the 9th, Duran induced a ground ball back to the mound where he promptly fielded and fired to first base to clinch the Golden Lions first ever East Region Championship and appearance in the NCAA Division II College World Series. Cipoletti would be named the Most Outstanding Player after giving up only one run over 15.2 innings over the span of the tournament. At the World Series held at the USA Baseball National Training Complex in Cary, North Carolina, Duran continued his outstanding season by tossing a complete game three hitter against then No. 1 nationally ranked UC San Diego to give Dowling a 3-1 victory in their opening game. The Golden Lions dropped their next game to eventual National Champion Lynn University by a score of 6-5. After trailing 4-1, Dowling would fight back to tie the game at five on a two RBI single off the bat of David Wendt (Methuen, MA), but Chad Crowe won the game with an RBI single in the bottom of the 8th. Dowling would have a rematch with UC San Diego but dropped the contest 13-1 this time around to end their season. Daniel Pembroke would be the only member of the team named to the AllTournament squad after finishing 4-for-12 with an RBI in all three games, including a home run in the second contest against UC San Diego.

ROBERT J. GAFFNEY PRESIDENT OF DOWLING COLLEGE

Robert J. Gaffney took office as the fourth president of Dowling College on October 1, 2006. Mr. Gaffney served as Suffolk County Executive from 1992 until 2003, being re-elected overwhelmingly in 1995 and 1999. Upon retiring from elective office, he was named a partner in the law firm of Meyer, Suozzi, English & Klein, P.C., and involved in many aspects of the firm’s practice. In 1985, Mr. Gaffney was elected to the New York State Assembly, representing the Fourth Assembly District, a district that included the State University of New York at Stony Brook, three major hospitals and numerous health care facilities. While in the State Assembly, he became a recognized leader in matters involving environmental protection, real property taxation, higher education, and many aspects of health care. He served as the ranking Republican member of the Real Property Tax Committee and the Committee on Corrections, as well as serving on the Assembly Standing Committees on Codes, Higher Education, Environmental Conservation and the Judiciary. He co-chaired the Assembly Republican Task Force

on Crime Victims’ Rights. In 1992, Mr. Gaffney was elected Suffolk County’s sixth County Executive, a position he held for twelve years, having been

re-elected overwhelmingly in 1995 and again in 1999. He retired from elective office on December 31, 2003. During his three terms as Suffolk County Executive, Mr. Gaffney played a major role in promoting the interests of the Long Island Region on the state and national levels. He served as President of the New York State Association of Counties (NYSAC) from 1994-1995, and as President of the New York State County Executives Association from 1995-1996. His counsel is often sought by local officials as well as officials of other counties throughout the nation in matters of planning, transportation, environmental protection, welfare reform, and fiscal management. He has served on the National Association of Counties (NACO) Large Urban County Caucus. Mr. Gaffney served on the New York Metropolitan Transportation Coordinating Committee from 1992 until 2003 and served as co-chairman from 2002-2003. Mr. Gaffney, who was featured as a “Long Islander of the Century” by Newsday in 2000, has been a recognized leader in environmental protection and land preservation. He has received honors for his work in this area from The Nature Conservancy, the Peconic Land Trust, the Long Island Pine Barrens Society, and numerous other environmental and land use organizations. He was instrumental in the creation, organization and implementation of the Central Pine Barrens Joint Planning and Policy Commission and served as its first chairman, a position he held until his retirement from public office in 2003. Under Mr. Gaffney’s leadership, hundreds of thousands of acres of environmentally sensitive land in Suffolk County have been preserved. Long a believer in passing on knowledge to future leaders, Mr. Gaffney has served as an adjunct professor at the State University of New York at Stony Brook, where he has taught “Public Policy and Administration” in the Graduate School of Political Science from 2000-2003.

VICE PRESIDENT FOR ATHLETICS & INSTITUTIONAL ADVANCEMENT RICK COLE, JR.

As Vice President for Athletics & Institutional Advancement for Dowling College, Rick Cole, Jr. believes he is doing more than just building a great athletic program. His mission is to help shape future leaders and build champions in athletics, academics, in the community and in life. In implementing that mission, Rick is instilling in each of Dowling’s student-athletes the understanding that they should serve as role models for other students; exemplifying achievement in their sports, in their studies and service on behalf of their community.

RICK COLE, JR.

In just four years, Rick Cole Jr. has transformed the landscape of collegiate athletics at Dowling College. As part of the department’s five-year strategic plan, he has secured the necessary funding to add women’s soccer, women’s lacrosse and men’s cross country as NCAA sponsored varsity sports while also elevating twelve coaches to full-time status. In addition, Rick has conducted a gender equity review to ensure the departments compliance with Title IX, completed an NCAA institutional self-study and compliance blue print, expanded the sports medicine department in both staffing and equipment, re-branded the marks and logos, re-designed the department website, secured an exclusive buying contract with an apparel company, established a corporate sponsorship program and developed a plan for an annual campaign for athletics to raise the funds necessary to meet the unmet costs of the department.

Rick was also instrumental in the planning and development of the Brookhaven field initiative. The $12.5 million complex which opened in the Spring of 2008, is the home of the Golden Lions soccer, lacrosse, baseball and softball programs, and is one of the premier athletic facilities in the northeast. Over 40 years in the making, a dream of playing an athletic contest on a true home field has finally become a reality. On the field, Dowling’s athletic teams have flourished under Cole’s leadership. In 2006, the men’s soccer team took home Dowling’s first ever National Championship while reaching the Championship match again in 2008. In previous years, men’s lacrosse reached the National Championship game, the women’s volleyball team participated in the national quarterfinals three times, baseball advanced to the College World Series in 2009 and women’s rowing, women’s soccer, men’s tennis, golf and softball have made NCAA postseason tournament runs. Student-Athletes at Dowling have also been transformational in their commitment to community service throughout Cole’s tenure as Athletic Director. This year, the SAAC raised over $17,000 for the Make-A-Wish Foundation; a record for any institution in the history of the division wide initiative. Cole was also instrumental in the department wide partnership with Keep Islip Clean; a branch of Keep America Beautiful. In the Fall, Dowling organized the largest group clean up (over 250 student-athletes, staff and coaches) in the history of the program. Throughout his tenure, the student-athletes and staff at Dowling have volunteered countless hours to give back to the community for organizations such as Habitat for Humanity, Susan G. Komen for the Cure, Big Brothers Big Sisters and The Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation. Additionally, Cole oversees the Office of Institutional Advancement. As Vice President for Institutional Advancement he leads the initiative to focus on building relationships and securing capital resources for operating, capital and endowment needs. Institutional Advancement seeks to forge stronger partnerships and deeper relationships between the institution and many of its stakeholders including our more than 35,000 alumni, parents, foundations, business partners and friends. In collaboration with the President, Rick assumes primary responsibility for the overall direction and leadership of Institutional Advancement. Cole also sits on various industry wide committees. Recently Cole was named to the NCAA Division II Management Council and serves on the ECC Lacrosse Committee. Cole just completed a three-year stint as the chair of the NCAA National Lacrosse Committee. Prior to joining Dowling, Cole served as Senior Associate Athletic Director for External Affairs at St. John’s University and Stony Brook University’s Associate Athletic Director for External Affairs and Advancement. While at St. John’s, he managed a corporate relationship with a leading international athletic footwear company for apparel and equipment valued in the millions. During his tenure at Stony Brook, he established a fundraising initiative to fund the school’s transition from Division III to a Division I competition. An accomplished volleyball coach, Rick has served as head coach of the AAU Long Island Power Volleyball Club, the University at Buffalo’s Men’s Volleyball Club Team and the AAU Cheetah Volleyball Club of Western New York. He is the founder and Director of the Intensive Volleyball Training Camp, as well as Co-Director of the Island Volleyball Academy, which coaches girls, age 10-18, throughout Long Island. Cole received his Bachelor’s degree in 1992 and Master’s in Education in 1994, both from the State University at Buffalo. He currently resides in Oakdale with his wife Brooke and three children Taylor (10), Mackenzie (9) and Trey (7).
