It’s A Celebration! Welcome to our 5th Annual Hat & Glove Inspiration Breakfast! I’m so grateful that you chose to spend this special day with me. It’s amazing how time has flown by from the very first breakfast that took place in 2009. The Hat & Glove Inspiration Breakfast has grown tremendously, and I thank God that he chose to use me as a vessel to encourage others to step out on faith & pursue your dreams!

I have learned during my journey of walking in God’s path that you have to trust Him solely, the doors that God opens for you, no man can shut! The saying is so true, “What God Has For You, It’s For You”. I have encounters many challenges from individuals & situations that I now know were test of my faith, knowing that God had given me the vision to create a platform that would motivate, uplift and inspire people just like me. The trick of the enemy is to kill, still & destroy God’s assignments. Their is some awesome power that lives within you. Your healthy spiritual being & positive mindset can conquer negativity, obstacles & challenges, it’s up to you to search deep within and utilize YOUR power, but make sure it’s used in a positive manner. In life we all will face unpleasant, uncomfortable and sometimes life-changing situations, but at the end of the day it’s our responsibility as warriors of Christ to deal with those situations as God’s chosen, What Would Jesus Do? During these 5 years of experiencing the development of the Hat & Glove Inspiration Breakfast, I have met so many wonderful people from all walks of life. This is the first year that the Hat & Glove Inspiration Boards were established. I have so much love and appreciate for the dynamic women & men that have come forth to donated their time to work with me and insure that 2013 and the years to come will be an experience that you will never forget! Thank you for supporting the Hat & Glove Inspiration Breakfast, God Bless You! With Love, Sylvia 7

Love yourself first by Evelyn Nazario

of their own - losing themselves to the rigor of everyday life; living for others as if our own existence doesn’t matter. Oh but it does! John 10:10 says “The thief has come to kill, steal and destroy” and he won’t stop working towards your life’s demise! You, woman of God, matter! You were created to be royalty. A Queen! Every destination, whether positive or negative, starts with a thought. Your attitude determines your altitude. There are however, life experiences that cause our life to go through chaos. How we choose to deal with these issues can make all the difference in the world! About the writer: Evelyn Nazario has been a board member and supporter of the Hat & Glove Breakfast ever since its beginning. Since 2009, Evelyn has shared her testimony and life’s experiences with diverse groups to motivate, inspire and educate in different life components. She is available to speak at your church, school, business, conference or retreat and you may contact her at loveyourselffirst915@gmail.com or call her directly at 312-6468227.

The following is Evelyn’s reflection on women and health and wellness.

God wants ALL women to be in a place of true selfacceptance. We are created in

His image and therefore daughters of the Most High; giving us supreme authority to achieve the best of our potential. Most women spend their time pouring love into others needs before first taking care

HnastpHiratat&&ioGnloGBverelakofasvte

In September, 2009 I had gone through a very traumatic episode in my life – one that took me over the edge – as I was betrayed by a church member/sister. Admittedly, instead of facing the situation in a godlier manner I became bitter real bitter - leading me into a tailspin of medically diagnosed depression. My behavior completely changed, I backslid for a brief period, experiencing unnecessary homelessness, ridicule from family members for my obvious reckless behavior, embarrassed because here I was -this well spoken, college educated woman with great potential, wasting her life feeling sorry for herself for making poor life choices. I received professional help for my depression, and still do, however my reality was that I was treating the physical condition and not truly healing my inner spirit. Only God can give us the peace that surpasses

all understanding (Philippians 4:7). My kairos moment had arrived! I started seeing my life actually having substance – understanding that only God places and positions me. I had to stop blaming others for my life’s mistakes and begin to take responsibility for my part in it. My only job now is to live according to what is pleasing to Him and have faith that my former mess will be someone else’s message. Glory be to God – I’m in a much better place now - and healthier! I have truly accepted God’s forgiveness and love upon my life! Knowing your place in His Kingdom is the key to overcoming whatever life’s obstacles you face. As women we need to commit ourselves to loving ourselves first and loving God for what he is doing for our lives. Seeking Him first guarantees us the opportunity for our life’s activities, no matter what they are to function in His spiritual flow (Matthew 6:33) - aligning it with the plans that God has already predestined for our future (Jeremiah 29:11). Our self-esteem is very important for our healthy living. Forget what others are going to say about you. Let them talk. People will always murmur. A healthy spiritual image gives us freedom to work for Christ, no matter what you hear anyone say about you. You may feel weak but your God is strong and there is nothing that your God can’t do! You were created for greatness. Pick yourself up, dust yourself off and take the step of faith to believe in God for your destiny now!

What Teens Desire from Adults By: Davon Smith In today’s society, teenagers searching for a just mindset look to like minded adults for guidance through everyday struggles; for teens that have no where else to turn, they look to these adults to help shape their minds and help them get over the trials and tribulations that may be ailing them. Even though many adults know the impact that they have on today’s teens, many do not seem to. And whether they know it or not, the image that adults depict definitely helps to sculpt the minds of today’s young adults. Teenagers look to adults for advice; many teens realize that many of the things that they go through or have been through someone older and wiser might have already been through it. Therefore teens know that these adults are the ideal people to look to. Adults can tell you what they did right, wrong, what they would change, and what they would keep the same. This helps the youth to guide their decisions in a better way.

Teens also look to adults for encouragement. Many teens do not have peer or parental support often causing them to believe that they are worthless. These teens look up to these adults to help them through each day. They long for someone who will push them and tell them how much they are appreciated. Teens definitely take this to heart and refer to these kind words whenever they feel discouraged. Many teens may also look up to adults as confidantes. It is really unhealthy for someone to keep so much bottled up; and when there are no peers to turn to, adults seems to be the only other option. It is very helpful when an adult is there to listen to your story, issues, and even triumphs. It is very lovely when someone is willing to give inspiration and feedback; and when someone who is willing to lend a hand to help you learn from your experiences. In all of these ways and for all of these reasons, perhaps even more, teens look to adults. They give guidance in ways that other teens can not. They teach you how to celebrate your successes and learn from your missteps. They try to teach and encourage you to be the best that you can be. As long as these adults continue to be good mentors the future of the youth will be bright. And they will be able to continue on the path of righteousness. 16

Empowering Youth Today for Fiscal Responsibilities Tomorrow

Children that learn financial principles early in life tend to have a higher standard of living over the long term, including retirement. Children without financial literacy have a greater chance of being in a financial crisis within their lifetime.

40% of Americans say they live beyond their means. 50% of Americans live paycheck to paycheck. Only 32% of American parents talk to their children regularly about personal finance. Only 21% of graduating high school students participate in financial literacy courses.

-communityfef.org/advocate/

I frequently talk with adults that can barely articulate the difference between a stock and a bond or how the banking industry works. We are ill equipping our children for a society that has little mercy on the financially challenged and economically illiterate. Ironically, around sixty-nine percent of parents admit to feeling less prepared to give their teenager guidance about investing than they do having the ‘sex talk’ with them. (Charles Schwab’s 2008 “Parents & Money). Will Medicare and social security be there for our children? Maybe or maybe not. So, we need to help them plan as though they may not be options. We have no idea, really, what programs will be there, so we need to make sure our kids are equipped to deal with life as they find it. With all of the financial turmoil around us, the chances for children to obtain the American dream are becoming slimmer. Eighty-five percent of college graduates plan to move back home after graduating. (Twenty something Inc. 2010 survey) The rate has risen from sixty-seven percent in 06’. (Jessica Dickler, CNN staff writer). We can fight back by equipping our kids with the skill sets 18

to manage, appreciate and accumulate assets at the earliest age possible. When your child is born, open up a brokerage account, online discounts are fine and purchase small affordable amounts of shares. Start off with what you are most familiar with . . .for instance, when my son was born I was very familiar with Proctor & Gamble, Beechnut, Gerber . . .get the picture? Enroll your children in economic and financial literacy courses. Almost fifty percent of those who closely monitor their finances say that they learned about personal finance from their parents or at home more frequently. (2008 Financial Literacy Survey National Foundation for Credit Counseling, Inc. and MSN Money). Start checking and savings accounts for them early to help them value fiscal responsibility and learn how to manage money. Start building credit for them as soon as possible. All these things will jump start your child’s financial strength. Choosing to let your child learn about finance later in life may cost them more than you can imagine.

Minister Denise D. Denson On Christ The Solid Rock I Stand All Other Ground Is Sinking Sand.

HEALTH is important to us. We know that without it you can be limited in what you do physically. We do all that we can to keep ourselves healthy; we take our medications, exercise, change our eating habits and all of those are good things to do. We keep our doctor’s appointments, are not late for our exercise schedules but, what do we do in keeping in touch with the Great Physician regarding our spiritual health. Do we take our spiritual health as seriously as we do our physical health? Do we realistically take the time to do, to the best of our ability, what it takes to secure a healthy soul? To be sure we are in lock step with our spiritually, let’s always refer to

The Word of God. Just as we read our diet schedules and keep our doctor’s appointments, we can ensure our wellbeing by remembering to sanctify the Lord God in our hearts, Have a good conscience, show forth the praises of Him who called us out of darkness, lay aside all malice and guile and evil speaking’s. These are a few ways that we are able to secure our spiritual health; we can find many more in the Scriptures. So, just as we read our diet schedules and keep our doctors’ appointments, let’s be just as diligent with following the teaching of the master so that we will be able to say it is well with my soul.

Health is “the condition of being sound in body, mind and spirit”. Wellness is “an active process of becoming aware of and learning to make healthy choices which lead toward a more successful existence.” Yes, our bodies are our temple and God created each of us divinely. Loving what God made, makes us excited to use our free will of choice to take care of this temple. In today’s world, so many of us are aff licted with diseases from cancer to Heart disease, Diabetes, Aids and Multiple Sclerosis, just to name a few. If we currently do not have any illness, we go through it with family members and are told there is a high risk of us inheriting the illness. Health and wellness is the driver of our quality of life. We must make efforts to maintain good health. This should be our lifestyle choice and become the New Normal.

“Everything in the universe has a purpose” writer Marlo Morgan said. There are no accidents, there are only things we do not understand. As we take up our individual banner and give strong focus toward healthy habits, we can decrease the ills of today and the future. We need to eat to live, not live to eat. We need to love our body with the necessary physical activity. We need to align our mind with the word of our Lord, this strengthens our faith and lowers stress levels. Always get regular medical checkups, however, be a huge player in your health assessment. Being healthy is more about inner beauty and less about outer beauty.

MY PRAYER is that we all make the choice and put forth consistent efforts to create a healthy individual in ourselves and our community. Let us help those with illnesses as they go through. Surveys and studies have suggested that most habits good or bad are formed or created within ninety (90) days. What a short period of time to make a great difference. Remember, no matter what, there is always a reason to be thankful, having the attitude of gratitude is being thankful for what we have right now. As my mother always says, “When we know better, we do better”!

There Exists Within Each Of Us A Natural State Of Simplicity. When we open our hearts to find our best selves we feel happy, light and at peace. In contrast, our complicated life can bring a state of suffering, strife and unhappiness. Our bodies, as well as our souls feel this. It’s a loss of our time and our Godly purpose. Complications take many forms, including a harsh lifestyle, enslaving memories, toxic relationships, emotional debts, indecision, addictions, and negative conditioned beliefs. When our life is overly burdened, we’re weighed

Delightful Dining

It’s a great idea to plan meals with fresh vegetables, lean meats and fiber rich foods. But it’s also important to plan to enjoy meal time. Having a positive attitude about preparing a delightful dining experience in your own kitchen can make meal time more pleasurable. Research shows that worrying or being “guilt ridden” about food can raise the risk of being obese. Most times those who fret over food and approach cooking as a mindless task are more likely to be impulsive eaters and will gorge on food—even on nutritious meals, which defeats the purpose. Even if you face limited food choices you can be creative in your cooking and savor food that is both good for you and good to you. Lastly, when you can, try not to eat alone. Recent studies have highlighted the fact that people who eat alone tend to be more prone to eat poorly and find eating to be more of a chore. Relishing the preparation and presentation of food, as well as sharing a meal, can improve your emotional as well as your physical well-being.

Constantly Connected

It’s no surprise that healthy family and social relationships can be a benefit as you make change to improve your health. Numerous studies have shown that loving relationships can protect your heart and increase lifespan. Surrounding yourself with relatives, friends and even sweethearts that cheer for you to eat better, exercise more, and who buffer you from stress is significant to reaching a goal of optimal wellness. Encouraging and caring people can help keep you on track by reminding you of small actions like making doctor appointments, taking medication and properly stocking your kitchen with the right foods. Nurturing connections can instill a sense of being cared for and loved, esteemed and valued as a person. As you focus on simplifying your life, make sure that you embracing loving and accepting yourself. Know that you are now doing all that you can do right now, and that is all anyone can do. When you stay in the moment, you have all the time in the world and whatever needs to be done will be completed in the exact right time.

Increasingly hospitals, home caregivers, community clinics, and some churches provide cooking and exercise classes, as well as support groups to help you make important changes for better health. Many health ministries and outreach programs also offer coping techniques to help get you through the “rough patches” when things become frightening or overwhelming. Physical challenges, emotional trauma, financial hardship, food insecurity, family issues and loss can hamper progress. Learning to successfully cope with the psychological risks to health and wellbeing can be just as important, if not more, than a 30 minute brisk walk or low-fat diet. Many of these services are free and have people that will come to your home. Community outreach programs feature health educators and nurses that can navigate you through the ups and downs as your lifestyle is altered to lose weight, lower blood sugar and strengthen your heart.

My first play Suga’ Foot Blue a profound drama educating on the causes of diabetes Why I Write

I write to tell stories, and stories are transformative. We know we’ve heard a good story when we feel it, when it makes us talk about it, when it makes us ask questions and when it makes us think. My plays are the art of my work. Each play is meant to create live, engaging and very real characters. So far I have three plays Suga’ Foot Blue, Hussie and Gandy Danced. Suga’ Foot Blue is a tale about not taking care of oneself and the longing for love, Hussie is a darker play that examines the harshness of too much love and Gandy Danced is a play on healing and bonding of laboring men. Each play moves the audience in its experience and captures the imagination and the soul. All of this in an effort to love deeper and be better. That said, remember to Keep Life simple. Let go of things beyond your control. Live in the moment. Heal. And be your Best Self.

Staying Active While Living with Multiple Sclerosis (MS) Multiple Sclerosis (MS) is a disease that attacks the central nervous system and interferes with the brain’s ability to send and receive messages. There are visible and invisible symptoms which may include numbness, pain, dizziness, spasticity (leg stiffness), bladder and bowel dysfunction, slurred speech, depression, fatigue, loss of coordination, walking and vision impairment, cognitive and memory difficulties etc. Living with MS can be devastating, especially since it usually affects people in the prime of their lives. Thus, I believe it is imperative that one stays active spiritually, mentally, emotionally and physically, while living with MS. I feel that if you don’t use it, you may loose it.

Following are some of my suggestions: • Spiritually: It is important to have

a spiritual outlet for peace of mind. Depression is a major symptom of MS and can be overcome with positive thoughts and people.

• Mentally:

Cognitive issues are big challenges with MS. It is vital to keep the brain flowing, challenged, and stimulated. Some ways can include taking classes, such as acting which focuses on memorizing lines to enhance short term memory; doing crossword puzzles and/or Sudoku; playing games etc.

• Emotionally:

Laughter is good for the soul. You can go out to comedy clubs and/or surround yourself with fun, silly people. When you laugh, endorphins are stimulated, which may relieve pain, a major MS symptom.

• Physically:

You should exercise daily and do what you enjoy to prevent spasticity (stiffness). Don’t over do it. Do what you can and like to do. I love dancing and yoga. Thus, when I line dance and do zumba, I don’t feel like I’m exercising. I’m just having fun. On the other hand, I feel my yoga classes. It is that “good type of pain”. The end results are increased flexibility and muscle tone, which are essential. A person diagnosed with MS may feel like they are all alone. They should never alienate themselves from society. Following are some ways to get involved. • Volunteering is an opportunity to explore something new and do what you want to, not what you have to do. • Explore a hobby or passion with someone, or a group.

• Align yourself with people who are interested in you. People who do not mind your limitations. Finding people to hang with who understand, or want to understand you, is vital, whether they are relatives, friends, or a significant other. • Take an active approach in learning about your health challenge by going to support group meetings and seminars, and connecting with the people there. Communicate and develop relationships with people who are like you. Stay active. What you want to do is take the focus off of yourself and what is gong on within your body. Turn your situation into an opportunity to help others. You will feel much better. --------------------------------------

Determined to finish strong By: Radiah Henderson

I can remember the date and time I opened my acceptance letter to SIUC. I was aware I had achieved one step toward my success, but I knew there were more goals to accomplish. I entered college with a mind frame to finish strong. Certain steps I took toward finishing strong were to create a system of established priorities. My main concern was school. Also in college there was more freedom. To discipline myself I prioritized class work, extracurricular activities, social actions and exercising to keep stress levels down. The large lectures were intimidating, but that didn’t stop me from being actively engage in the material presented to me. Now that I’m a junior, the majority of my classes are small and more focused on Radio/TV material. However, when I took courses that were lectures, I made sure I sat in the front. I wanted to feel more present and to participate in discussions when possible.

my business to take classes that will advance my knowledge and experience toward my career path. Skills I can use on a resume or during an interview. For example, I am currently taking a public relations course called Business and Professional Communication, this course offers skills that can sharpen your interview skills, prepare for conference briefings, and develop presentation techniques. This class is fun and offers advice that I can use in future employment.

Currently, I serve as a fifth semester Resident Assistant. This position requires a high level commitment of A common misperception about both time and effort. On a daily basis college faculty members is that I am required to seek the needs of all they don’t want to be bothered by students on my floor. I am required students. As a result, I made it the remaining 10% for “me time.” 28

Although the position takes up a lot of time, I learned to balance my priorities and get the job done. Though I have late nights due to being on duty, I keep in mind my expectations for the future. I have strong desires to become an anchor. I have a vision of being employed after graduation and avoid getting stuck in a post-graduation rut or becoming unemployed. I have enjoyed the experience of being a young woman in college working toward a degree. I will obtain my bachelors in Radio/ Television specializing in electronic journalism in May 2014. Second to accepting Jesus Christ as my personal savior, this will be a great moment in my life.
