about me

Hi there! My name is Sydney and I am currently pursuing my masters in architecture at Kansas State University. I recently received two degrees this past May, one in interior design, as well as one in art history. I am fascinated with the world of architecture and design, and how we can implement art and its history to further explore new ideas and solutions. Additionally, I enjoy biking, hiking, and visiting new places, especially coffee shops. I would love to find a firm that I can bring these interests to, as well as my determination to push the limits of design, and help to create a curiosity in creativity,

01 One-Room Schoolhouse Redux Spring 2023 | 7 Weeks | Solo Revit | Lumion | Photoshop | Illustrator

For my first project in my masters program, we were given the requirements to design a community center located in the heart of Kansas State University’s campus. The design is derived from the original one-room schoolhouse design and all it stands for. The following design looks to modernize the traditional schoolhouse design, as well as its function. By establishing a form that displays a genuine appreciation for the vernacular schoolhouse design, the space creates a warming invite expressed towards the surrounding community. The Schoolhouse Community Center is an iconic, unique structure for the campus, looking to bridge the ideas of traditional education, and modern community.

The main approach of the building is designed to be inviting with a large window into the space, and insets into the building to pull the user towards the main entry. The louvers in the front are placed to filter light, and create privacy from the nearby busy roads. Sidewalks are embedded into the space to allow for clear circulation around the building for students to use while walking through campus. FRONT APPROACH

02 Kopfkino Spring 2022 | 16 Weeks | Solo Revit | Lumion | Photoshop

For my senior project in the interior design program, I wanted to develop a unique design, and push the boundaries of interiors. To do this, my design focused on what spaces could look like in the year 2042. The space reflected my research consisting of smart cities, futuristic pandemic design, augmented realities, sustainability, immersive museum design, and material advancement. The design is primarily inspired by the work of Zaha Hadid, and her beautiful, futuristic curved detailing. While the shell of the building was provided, the rest of the space is a look into our future of spaces, museums, and interior design holistically.

The design of Kopfkino was heavily influenced by our rapidly changing, technological world. Each exhibit moves chronologically in order showing our history from 2020 - 2042 (current day). The design looks to better understand how we can design for healthy spaces, and solely the user of the space. By implementing technologies into the space, we can begin to get a better idea of how technology can benefit spaces and each unique experience of the user. CAFE VIEW

03 Senior Research Project Fall 2022 | 6 Weeks | Solo Revit | Lumion | Photoshop

Reflecting a research paper written throughout the semester, the project primarily focuses on the spatial implementation of Post-Impressionist elements and principles, specifically the artistic genius of Vincent van Gogh. Through theoretical analysis, it can be hypothesized that if children within the Pre-Operational Stage, early childhood, are immersed within emotional Post-Impressionist elements, their imaginations can flourish. This will then allow children to be more comfortable and more creative within their environments. The following imagery portrays an illustration of just how our educational environments can combat mental health issues and a lack of creativity in youth and future adulthood.

THEORETICAL ANALYSIS

HISTORICAL OBSERVATION

A comparison of theories and topics to assist in proving the commonalities between ideas. These ideas were used to support the hypothesis to further explain how creativity in early childhood can emotionally impact children long term.

By observing Vincent van Gogh and his common expressionist motifs, spatial elements and a color palette could be formed. These elements were inspired by his depictions of turbulent flow, use of luminance and pattern, outdoor influence, sense of movement, and color theory.

FLOOR PLAN

The floor plan is heavily influenced by van Gogh’s use of the “serpentine line”. This form creates a very organic, and calming flow of spaces. As users travel throughout, the space is also equipped with complementary color palettes seen in the renderings. This being another common van Gogh motif.
