The Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras Festival takes place on THE sacred Aboriginal land of the Gadigal, Cammeraygal, Bidjigal, Birrabirragal, Darug and Dharawal people, who are the Traditional Custodians of the Sydney Basin.

We pay our respects to Elders both past and present, and extend a special acknowledgement to all Rainbow Elders who - as part of the longest continual culture in the world - form the longest continual queer culture in the world. We recognise the continuing connection to lands, skies, waterways and communities. Always was, always will be Aboriginal Land.

Welcome

Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras Chair

With its resilience and social impact, the Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras Festival continues to prove itself as an Australian institution. We’ve grown from roots planted by our brave pioneers over 45 years ago, to an event that together with Sydney WorldPride welcomed the world back to Sydney. You cannot imagine Sydney without our Parade, and the sight of thousands of people joyously gathered together on our State Heritage listed Oxford Street route.

Our festival has been a beacon to so many people, making visible the communities who come together in love, acceptance and celebration. This is a lifeline for those who might still be struggling with their identity and faced with discrimination and isolation. This is and must always be an essential part of our national identity – a powerful statement of our values, creativity and inclusivity.

This year’s Festival theme – Our Future – is the perfect invitation to define the next stage of Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras. We imagine a future in which we share equal rights and an equal expectation of fair treatment, that celebrates and listens to First Nations people, a future where queer young people can be free to be themselves without fear of harmful conversion practices or discrimination, in which transgender and gender diverse people can be safe and thrive as them selves, where our queer elders are respected and supported in their senior years, a future where we share our collective voice with the world.

We look forward to seeing the future you dream of, and we thank every person who joins us on this exciting journey of possibilities.

I look forward to welcoming you to Mardi Gras’ 46th season!

Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras CEO

For more than four decades our beautiful communities have come together each year to celebrate the Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras Festival. The colour, costumes, connection, pride, diversity and love is more fabulous every year.

For the 2024 Festival we set out with a mission – to remind our communities, our city and the world what a true Sydney Mardi Gras is all about. It’s about connection, it’s about celebration, it’s about our voice, about pushing for progress and meaningful change. It’s about telling the world we’re here, we’re queer and we’re not going anywhere.

The team at Sydney Mardi Gras and I are incredibly proud to present to you one of our biggest Festivals yet, with 19 signature events joining 100+ more from local and international promoters, venues, community organisations and arts institutions. In 2024 we’re welcoming 3 brand new signature events: Festival First Light – our inaugural city-wide Welcome to Country performed by Elders from across the Sydney Basin. Queer Futures, a reimagined talks and ideas series. And Hot Trans Summer, a total trans oasis featuring an all-trans line-up.

We’re also thrilled to be growing our Festival family by introducing our Sydney Mardi Gras twist on two of the community’s favourite events from 2023: Bondi Beach Party and Ultra Violet.

We also join hands with some of our beloved friends to bring you Diamond Dance, a collaboration between Sydney Mardi Gras, Dykes on Bikes and Polly’s; and the Marks Park Sunrise Service of Reflection, where we’ve teamed up with ACON, Bronte Surf Club and Waverley Council to come together to commemorate the suffering of innocent members of our communities.

I am incredibly proud to be part of the Sydney Mardi Gras team, to work alongside our collaborators, our communities, our partners and thousands of volunteers to bring you the 2024 Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras Festival. This Festival is our moment, our celebration and our future – Happy Mardi Gras!

Minister for Tourism, the Arts, Music and the Night-time Economy

On behalf of the NSW Government, I’m pleased to welcome visitors to Sydney for the 2024 Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras.

Now in its 46th year, Sydney Mardi Gras has grown from a human rights protest to the festival we celebrate today. Sydney Mardi Gras is one of the largest LGBTQIA+ events in the world.

Learning from and acknowledging this history is important. This is why the Minns Government has made a commitment to preserve the history and stories of the LGBTQIA+ community through a permanent home for the Qtopia Sydney Museum at the former Darlinghurst Police Station.

On the 15th of July 1978 about 1000 people marched from Martin Place to Darlinghurst. They shouted outside the Police Station at Taylor Square “Get Your Laws Off Our Bodies”. They demanded an account for the treatment handed out to their friends and family within those walls.

A bag of flour and a policeman’s helmet were tossed about. Reinforcements were called and a scuffle broke out. Fifteen demonstrators were arrested.

This heritage-listed location marks a place of historical significance for the LGBTQIA+ community, acknowledging the oppression of Sydney’s LGBTQIA+ community, including the 78ers activists.

This historic location will now mark a new era, celebrating the rich history, culture and experiences of the LGBTQIA+ community.

What had been a site that represents a time of repression will become a place of storytelling and education.

While you’re celebrating Sydney Mardi Gras I hope you will also get along to Qtopia.

I wish everyone a safe and happy 2024 Sydney Mardi Gras.

The Hon. John Graham MLC (he/him) MINISTER FOR THE ARTS, MUSIC AND THE NIGHT-TIME ECONOMY

Lord Mayor of Sydney

The Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras Festival is one of the most anticipated events in the busy Sydney calendar, with a variety of activities that celebrate LGBTIQA+ pride.

This year’s theme, Our Future, asks us to join, influence and always champion LGBTIQA+ equality and human rights. We should always look to the future.

When we work together to promote respect, understanding, diversity and inclusion we all emerge stronger.

Now in its fifth decade, Mardi Gras is as relevant and provocative as ever.

The City of Sydney has a very long history of supporting the Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras and we’re proud to celebrate the iconic community festival in 2024.

I look forward to welcoming you to our amazing city and celebrating this important event.

Ours to define, ours to create, ours to DEMAND and ours to protect.

Our future is in danger, our future is limitless, our future is beautiful and our future is in our hands.

It’s informed by our past, impacted by our present, ours to manifest and full of endless possibilities.

It’s protecting queer children, it’s honouring our pioneers - our future is our calling and our future is unclear.

It’s the time of trans triumphs and the true meaning of free, it’s knowing what always was, always will be.

It’s dance floors and dark halls for all who we’ve lost. It’s freedom through music, love for all at no cost.

It’s our future, no question – our divine intervention.

No matter their plan, debate or delusion –we’ll make it clear so there is no confusion…

We are not Going Anywhere .

The Illusionist

BASED ON “THE MAGICIAN”

STARRING

Peaches Rosé (they/them)

The first, and always the first, The Illusionist holds the power to unlock the potential of anyone they meet. Peaches Rosé is a selfprofessed triple A threat - AFAB, Aboriginal and Autistic drag artist from Mouheneenner mob, Tasmania. Peaches embodies The Illusionist surrounded by a world of treasures - native florals, our revered disco ball and the symbol of love and liberation, the pink triangle.

The Illusionist is known to be resourceful, entertaining and for their ability to harness the power to turn energy into matter. Peaches’ recreation of the red robe into the Aboriginal flag and their determined face is their signal that they’re ready and determined for change.

8 #mardigras2024
STRENGTH .

The Protectors

BASED ON “THE CHARIOT”

STARRING DYKES ON BIKES

Kendal and Sarah (she/her)

PUPS

Pup Boss And Shin Yoshida (he/him)

Since the early days of the Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras Parade, the Dykes on Bikes have been our communities’ fearless protectors. Revving their en-gines, the rumble and the roar of them riding up Oxford Street fends off anyone there to tear us down.

The Protectors symbolises that through confidence, one can overcome all. Kendal and Sarah stand tall on their bike as Pup Boss and Shin Yoshida dust off their paws, ready to charge forward and fulfil their destiny - to keep us safe and clear the way for our communities to fill the streets with the joy and pride that comes with being one’s true self.

The powerful Progress Pride Flag billows in the wind of their ride as a reminder that in the face of adversity, our communities will always band together.

Wisdom

BASED ON “THE HIGH PRIESTESS”

STARRING

Sister Salomé of The Ninth Mystic Rhinestone (he/him)

The card of intuition, sacred knowledge and divinity. Sister Salomé sits between two pillars, black and white, symbolic of the duality of the masculine and feminine.

Sister Salomé joins us from the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence, that exists to challenge bigotry and hatred in the hearts and minds of people taught to fear difference, rather than rejoice in similarities.

Wise above all, his foot rests on a crescent moon, representing his connection to the divine feminine, his intuition and the phases of the moon. The veil of pomegranates, a reminder that things may not always be as they seem and abundance awaits those who choose to see the world in their own way.

Joy

BASED ON “THE SUN”

STARRING

Tyrone (he/him)

The source of all life, light and energy as it radiates optimism and positivity, Joy is the most powerful of all cards. It’s almost as if the sun itself is beaming from Tyrone’s eyes as he connects to his inner spirit, his true self, riding our revered Fair Day horse.

The four sunflowers on Tyrone’s head represent the four elements. His body is bare beneath the gold cloth, showing he has nothing to hide.

A proud man of Papua New Guinean and Torres Strait Island heritage he’s a presenter on a mission to champion First Nations, POC and Queer voices. With the power of the sun behind him combined with the power of being his true self - he is unstoppable.

Rebirth

BASED ON “THE STAR”

STARRING

Yvngcweed (he/him)

The layers peel back, and your true essence is revealed. A moment of reprieve after a time of turmoil and destruction. Despite the challenges and limiting beliefs that held him back, it is the dawning of a new era - the era of Rebirth.

On one knee Yvngcweed, a trans man and DJ, pours one vessel of pink and one of blue glitter into a reflective pool. Symbolic of the fluidity of gender and how after time you will eventually know and love the person staring back at you. Surrounded by seven stars, each representing one of the seven chakras.

Yvngcweed was raised in a conservative, religious, nonenglish speaking home and since finding his chosen family stands tall and says “I am here. Trans people are here. Our revolution has begun.”

The Courageous

BASED ON “STRENGTH”

STARRING

David Polson (he/him)

Family. Power. Community. Loss. Remembrance. Hope. David Polson is The Courageous. Standing tall in the face of fear, and as a reminder of those we’ve lost, David is the eternal embodiment of determination and drive.

As one of the first 400 people to be diagnosed with HIV in Australia, David has committed his life to supporting the hunt for a cure. Pushing his body to the limit he has undergone 28 HIV drug trials since his diagnosis in 1984. Despite being told not to plan to live long, he stands tall today embraced by the red ribbon to show that no matter the battle, you hold the power inside you to emerge stronger.

Unity

BASED ON “THE LOVERS”

STARRING

Sexy Galexy

Charlie Villas (she/they)

Nikita (she/her)

This is the world where harmony, Unity and connection are the source of all life. The real-life lesbian love story of married couple Charlie Villas and Nikita comes through as their eyes lock, hand-in-hand, in pure adoration of each other.

In one hand, an apple from the Tree of Knowledge, the other, a flame from the Tree of Life. Symbolic of our Adam and Eve’s unrivalled devotion and the primordial partnership of soul and spirit.

Sexy Galexy, the original Glamourboi, stands over the couple breaking through the heavens to help them discover the beauty of true love. Sexy’s wings glow red and tall - as if they’re on fire with the passion of Charlie and Nikita’s perfect union.

10 #mardigras2024

The Acrobat

BASED ON “THE HANGED MAN”

STARRING

Mama Medusa (she/they)

Ready to see life from a new perspective? Mama Medusa is The Acrobat - your reminder that things might not always be as they seem. This card reminds us that in life, sometimes the greatest sacrifice can lead to the ultimate solution.

Stop. Wait. Stare into Mama’s eyes. Stay still, suspended in time. Allow yourself to hang in a hypnotic hold where despite the chaos of the world around you - you choose to be still and take your time to chart the course ahead.

The red silk Mama so effortlessly hangs from represents passion, love and the thrill of life. Swaying before a blue background that speaks to her knowledge. Her halo, enlightenment. The colours and symbols of a Saint.

New Beginnings

BASED ON “THE WORLD”

STARRING

Victoria Anthony (she/her)

THE FURRIES

Millie, Maui, Telford and Yummei

From the past, through the present and into the future. New Beginnings is one of the most important of all the cards and represents charging forward and deciding your own destiny.

Trans icon, activist and DJ Victoria Anthony perfectly embodies the figure in New Beginnings as she rests her head, passing through a portal, where her inner and outer worlds become one. Her hand is raised as The Illusionist’s was, symbolic of the manifestations of The Illusionist’s coming into fruition in New Beginnings.

The card of completion, accomplishment, balance and harmony, Victoria is guided by Maui, Millie, Telford and Yummeirepresentative of the four fixed Zodiac elements, seasons, corners of the Universe, compass points and the four suits of the Tarot.

Desire

BASED ON “THE DEVIL”

STARRING

Dimitri (he/him)

Clara Fable (she/her)

James (he/him)

It sure is better the devil you know. And when it comes to our sexy trio, they’re at the doorstep of a world of devilish debauchery.

Desire represents the shadow self, holding back from your desires, living in fear of your true self being revealed. Queer people, and our sexual desires have long gone misrepresented and suppressed. Dimitri, Clara and James are here to welcome you to the world you’ve been dreaming of.

The chains are limp, because judgement does not bind us. When they say we’re the devil, when they say we’re going to hell, we throw on some horns and have one hell of a party.

MARDI GS FILM F I VAL

THE 31st Mardi Gras Film Festival will offer a rich tapestry of films that authentically represent the diverse spectrum of the LGBTQIA+ experience.

In 2024, Mardi Gras Film Festival will showcase a treasure trove of Australian and Sydney premieres, bringing together stories from across the globe.

One of the most anticipated highlights is the adaptation of Aristotle and Dante Discover the Secrets of the Universe, a poignant portrayal of the transformative journey of two Mexican-American teenagers against the vibrant backdrop of the 1980s.

Megan Stalter, the comedy sensation known for her scene-stealing performances, takes the spotlight in Cora Bora, a riotous exploration of the life of a struggling musician.

All the Colours of the World Are Between Black and White, winner of the Teddy Award at Berlinale, tells a modern-day Nigerian story of profound affection between two men, while Monica stars transgender actress Trace Lysette alongside Patricia Clarkson, unravelling the delicate tale of a fractured family.

Learn all about the remarkable life and incredible process of the stylist who gave us The Devil Wears Prada’s cerulean sweater, as well as Carrie Bradshaw’s tutu, in Happy Clothes: A Film About Patricia Field.

Mutt follows Feña's rollercoaster journey through a whirlwind of emotions when people who had seemingly vanished from his life reappear after his transition.

Continue onto luxury Mediterranean bistros like Palazzo Salato or Le Foote, fine diners Quay or Oncore by Clare Smyth or the new Clam Bar or Bar Morris.

STAY

If waking up to harbour views is essential, book into the W Sydney. It boasts several food and drink offerings and a rooftop bar with a heated infinity pool overlooking Darling Harbour. At Capella Sydney you’ll find a high-end hotel set in a heritage-listed building with lush furnishings, a curated collection of artworks and a guests-only wellness space. Ace Hotel Sydney brings style with rooms appointed with record players, murals and minibars stacked with local products.

PLAY

The CBD is the innovative heart of Sydney’s theatre, dance and arts productions, and one of the city’s nightlife hubs. See a mesmerising performance by world-renowned Bangarra Dance Theatre, catch a production at the Sydney Opera House (or opt for a behind-the-curtains tour). Scale the 134-metre-high Sydney Harbour Bridge summit – Burrawa, the BridgeClimb experience guided by an Aboriginal Storyteller takes you on a journey back in time. Dive into Sydney’s live music scene at Mary’s Underground, an intimate club where jazz, indie-funk and everything inbetween meet on the dance floor. POOF DOOF at Ivy’s Pool Club and Changeroom Bar is a paradise of pop featuring local and international queer DJs. For a dose of art, the Sydney International Art Series brings the world’s most outstanding art exclusively to Sydney at the Museum of Contemporary Art and Art Gallery of New South Wales.

EAT AND DRINK

A culinary tour of the inner east begins with a coffee and croissant at Primary in Potts Point or check out Piña or Room 10 for exceptional brunch. If you’re staying local for the evening, Vermuteria serves vermouth and Spanish-esque plates and aperitivo bar Piccolo Bar serves amaro and snacks. For dinner, try Raja, for contemporary Indian or Caravin, an intimate Parisian-style restaurant.

In Darlinghurst you’ll find the original outpost of well-loved Sydney gelato shop Gelato Messina. There’s also Sydney institution Cafe Freda’s, an eatery and bar founded on community, art and music, on Taylor Square. Down on Crown Street are Lode (a queue-worthy bakery) and Henrietta (a bougie, Lebanese-inspired charcoal chicken shop). Armorica brings a taste of the Parisian brasserie to the suburb, and Nour offers contemporary Middle Eastern.

STAY

Oxford House on Oxford Street is a glamourous, relaxing oasis with a glistening pool and rooms outfitted with eclectic artwork, Grown Alchemist bathroom products, Double Rainbouu robes and Nespresso machines. Down the road in Surry Hills is the boutique Paramount House Hotel, bringing

Japanese styling and a blend of heritage and modern touches. Within the building you can also catch a classic film at the Art Deco Golden Age Cinema, grab coffee from Paramount Coffee Project, have a rooftop pastry at A.P House or sip natural wines at Poly.

PLAY

Darlinghurst is the heart of Sydney’s LGBTQIA+ community, and Oxford Street is where most Sydney Mardi Gras revellers will find themselves at midnight. Stonewall and Universal are key pitstops for pop hits and heaving dance floors. A few doors down is Palms, the ultimate discolovers destination for all your '80s hits and '90s pop. Live music venue Oxford Art Factory supports up-and-coming artists and next door’s Cliff Dive is a tiki-themed, R&B and EDM bar-club self-described as Sydney’s ‘wildest watering hole’. If you’re into karaoke, Goro’s in Surry Hills is great for tunes, ballads and Japanese snacks. During the day pivot to shopping Australian labels in Paddington such as Lee Mathews, Emma Mulholland on Holiday, Bassike and Zimmermann, and international brands such as Acne Studios. Or, if you’d prefer to explore the area with a guide, join The Fabulous Wonder Mama on a walking tour of Oxford Street.

Bondi

EAT AND DRINK

A culinary tour of the outer east begins with Bondi’s Icebergs and its accompanying restaurant, Icebergs Dining Room and Bar, which perfectly matches the surrounding beauty with simple yet sophisticated Italian dining. Along the beach, you will also find Italian eatery Makaveli, French bistro and bar ChouChou, and Promenade for seafood.

STAY

Boutique hotel chain QT’s Bondi iteration is beachside, laidback but luxurious, and has rooms featuring pops of colour and plush robes. You can also check into Hotel Ravesis for a boutique beach-front stay.

PLAY

Bondi is famous for a reason: it’s spectacular. Dip into waves for a rejuvenating swim or take a lesson with Let's Go Surfing. Afterwards, stroll the picturesque Bondi to Coogee Coastal Walk, 6km of cliffside pathway past enticing swimming spots. After your morning activities, change pace with an infrared or traditional sauna and/or ice bath at Slow House, Bondi’s stylish wellness centre.

Newtown and surrounds

EAT AND DRINK

Newtown’s King Street is a famous Sydney ‘eat street’. Ante is a sake and vinyl bar up the northern end of town, with up-market pizza place Bella Brutta, Finnish-ish fine diner Cafe Paci, and artisanal gelateria Mapo across the road.

Further south down King Street and onto Enmore Road, you’ll find cosmically themed martini bar Bar Planet and Egyptian street food at Cairo. Try Soulmate for excellent coffee and brunch, Valentinas for American-style diner food or Azuki for Japanese baked goods.

STAY

Straddling the inner west and the CBD, Chippendale’s The Old Clare Hotel is an elegant, welcoming and character-filled boutique hotel. (You don’t need to stay to check out its rooftop

pool and bar). Further into the inner west, The Urban in Newtown offers industrial-chic rooms in the centre of everything. It’s a hop, skip and a jump from the Enmore Theatre, second-hand stores, countless restaurants and Cow and the Moon’s world-class gelato.

PLAY

Made immortal by The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert, Erskineville’s The Imperial pays tribute to the iconic film with its Drag ‘N’ Dine shows – no Sydney Mardi Gras trip is complete without a visit. Up the road is the Enmore Theatre, the longest-running theatre in NSW and champion of iconic Australian acts and international talent alike. The area is also home to a barrage of vintage clothes and homewares stores – try The Real Deal, U-Turn and The Wilde Merchant.

Sustainability

Sustainability is at the forefront of all decision-making at Sydney Mardi Gras and just as we’re committed to delivering a world-class Festival, we’re committed to it being world-friendly as well.

Here are some of the ways we’re minimising our environmental impact:

• Event-wide ban of non-biodegradable glitter, balloons and confetti.

• Prioritising suppliers and collaborators that align with our sustainability practices, are actively reducing their carbon emissions and using renewable energy through our rigid procurement processes.

• Prioritise the avoidance and reduction of resources that turn into waste, reusing as much as possible and increasing our recycling and organic rates.

• Continue our work with our sustainability partners to seek out and execute recycling opportunities at Sydney Mardi Gras signature events. A practice that led to saving over 100,000 containers from landfill in 2023 alone.

• Advocating for environmental awareness and practices with all our partners and suppliers.

• Minimising our use of plastic products across the Festival.

• Tips on being a green Festival-goer at mardigras.org.au

Thank you

to all the amazing volunteers who make each season possible!

THANK YOU TO OUR VALUED PARTNERS!

We often refer to the Sydney Mardi Gras team as a ‘family’ and, as the queer community know all too well, when we say family we mean it. The joy you see in the faces of people marching in the Parade, the pride you see as someone struts through Fair Day, the passion you see on the stage at Sissy Ball is all reflected in Sydney Mardi Gras HQ. We’re a small team with a big dream – to bring you, the wonderous LGBTQIA+ communities a moment in time to come together and celebrate all we are, and all we can become.

Their names may only take up a page in this Festival Guide, but their drive, dedication, charisma and passion is enough to fill this book ten times over. To our Sydney Mardi Gras family, extended family, our suppliers, partners and colleagues – thank you. With a special thank you to the thousands of people who volunteer with us – whether this year is your first, you return every year, you volunteer with your family or your friends, you’re part of our fearless Mardi Gras Medical team or our magical Workshop crew – thank you.
