The Exchange Recovery College Programme September 2014—July 2015

Welcome Back! Hello and welcome to our second year as a Recovery College! Based on responses from our learners, this programme covers all terms from September 2014 through to July 2015. Hopefully, it will help you to plan your learning in a more structured way and also help you to identify the courses that follow on from each other. The computer courses have been so popular that a Level 3 course has been developed for learners who want to continue to develop and refine their computer skills. We are also working with a number of new partners in the forthcoming year and are very excited about these new ventures. Also, the centre for Learning & Development (based at the Keresforth Centre on Broadway) have kindly opened up courses that were previously only available to NHS staff and volunteers. We have tried to balance courses that reflect learning around self-management of health and wellbeing, as well as courses for enjoyment that, in turn, can help improve your confidence and self-esteem. As always, we are constantly reviewing this service and therefore it is essential that you continue to enrol on each course. This will help us to collect information that is vital to the development and success of the Exchange. In 2015 we are opening our doors to evening classes in the hope to make the college more accessible. We have also appointed a Library Assistant to help promote a library service within the college. This small library service will link in with SWYFT’s larger library at Fieldhead hospital. This means we are able to access much more information and resources to promote and enable learning. As always, we welcome feedback so that we can continue to improve the Recovery College and the experience for everyone. Please do not hesitate to contact a member of the college if you have any suggestions and/or feedback. It is envisaged that we may continue to add to this programme. This will be done through regular newsletters that will be available in the New Year and Easter. If you would like to add your name to the mailing list please give the College a ring on 01226 730433 or email us Barnsley.Recoverycollege@swyt.nhs.uk. Hope to see you soon!

Volunteering at The Exchange The Exchange is leading the way in developing people in their volunteering role. A new volunteer pathway has been developed that will start with your registering as a South West Yorkshire Partnership Foundation Trust (SWYPFT volunteer). We will support you to plan your volunteering journey that will incorporate training development and support. We recognise that people volunteer for a variety of reasons, whether that be to; gain employment, give back to your community or to become more active and improve your wellbeing. It may be you have experience of a mental health issue yourself, this means you are an expert and this expertise can help others. Whatever your motivations, if you are considering volunteering why not meet with Nick, our Volunteer Development Worker to discuss volunteering opportunities suitable to you. Nick can be contacted via email: nick.sennitt@swyt.nhs.uk.

Learning support We offer information, advice and guidance about each course and their content. Together with you, we will go through an Individual Learning Plan prior to the start of your learning with us. As your course(s) progress, we will help you to identify your goals, hopes and ambitions for your recovery journey and to help choose courses which best meet your goals. Within the learning plan there is an opportunity to discuss any learning support needs you may have. We will then do everything we can to support you. We want to create an environment that is conducive to learning and where learners feel they are supported. Feedback from learners, visitors, volunteers and staff is vital to how we develop the college and the courses we deliver. We hope to do this through regular evaluation and welcome your comments and ideas. If you do have any feedback, please speak to a member of the team or contact us via telephone on 01226 730433.

Frequently asked questions ….. By now, you may have lots of questions about The Exchange. Below are some of the most common questions that we have already been asked and hopefully these may be of use to you……. Q : “Can I be a volunteer & attend courses?” A:

Yes of course. You must complete an application form to undertake a volunteering role, this also includes being a co-producer and a co-facilitator. Regardless of who you are, or what your relationship is with Mental Health Services, everyone has the same opportunities and will be treated the same. “Will it affect my benefits?” No. Your benefits are only affected if you study over 16 hours per week or apply for a student loan. “Will I definitely get a place on the course I want?”

A:

Some courses are dependent on a minimum number of people attending. These courses will only run when this minimum number is achieved. “What if I can’t attend one week?” Because places are limited, we ask that people are able to commit to the full course, however, life being what it is, sometimes other things take priority. All we ask is that you let us know beforehand. “I can’t read or write, can I still attend?” Yes. We have support workers that will work closely with you and support you in any way they can. We will try our very best to meet your needs in the most appropriate way. Please give us a call if you require more information. “Can I bring a friend or member of my family to support me?”

A:

Yes. But your friend or family member will also need to enrol. Please ensure that you let a member of the team know so that you can be placed together. “Can I get help with child care?” No, sorry, we aren’t able to provide a Crèche Area , you would have to make your own child care arrangements if you wish to attend the college.

If you have any more questions that are not covered here, then please don't hesitate to contact one of the team on:Tel:

Thank you! Since opening the Recovery College in September 2013, we have been overwhelmed by the people that have contributed to the success, so far, of the college. We would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone that has been involved in the development of courses and its success. This includes our partners, co-producers, co-facilitators and volunteers. We would like to say a BIG thank you to all that have attended courses and that have given us feedback and have helped to shape the college.

The Recovery College now has established links with other organisations such as The Job Centre Plus, Wiseability, Public Health Education, WEA (Workers Education Association), Northern College & Adult Learning. Working in partnership means we can offer a much more varied programme and make contact with the wider community of Barnsley. We are also part of LearnBarnsley! Community Learning Trust which aims to raise awareness and develop skills for people in lifelong learning. The trust is working closely with all local colleges to identify how people can learn whilst managing any physical or mental health problems they may have.
