Page 2 From the Desk of Curt Hudek, PGA Southwest Section PGA Members Age before beauty? The Section Championship provided quite a duel between Paul Trittler and Mike Malaska (both Seniors in the SWSPGA) with Paul edging out Mike by 3 shots at Phoenix Country Club last month. The duo continued their dominate play again in the Senior Section Championship at Encanterra in September with Mike edging out Paul for a 2 shot victory by birdieing the last three holes for the victory. Congratulations to the following who qualified to play in the National Senior PNC to be held next month: Mike Malaska, Paul Trittler, Jon Stanley, Brett Upper, Ralph West and Tom Fischer. Youth is Served! Joe Penaflore earned the Assistants Championship title with a one day 36-hole total of four under par at Alta Mesa Country Club, while Dennis Downs and Matt Van Cleave earned a trip to the National Assistants Championship by finishing one shot behind. In the Section PNC, held at Longbow Golf Club, it was a three way tie of the younger set between Ben Weir, Brandon Smith and Brent Newcomb following 54 holes of competition. Ben, who had birdied four of his last six holes to tie for the lead, make two consecutive birdies in the in the playoff to earn the title. Congratulations to the following who qualified to play in the National PNC event to be held in Myrtle Beach next year; Ben Weir, Brandon Smith, Brent Newcomb, Craig Hocknull, Marty Jertson, Ben Kreger and unless a SWSPGA member wins a tour event before the end of the year Chris Endres. PGA of America Annual Meeting to be held in San Diego in November. All PGA members are welcome to attend the PGA of America’s Annual Meeting each year. This year the event is being held in San Diego on November 22nd and 23rd. For more information you may click on the following link: http://www.pgalinks.com/professionals/index.cfm?ctc=6838 Or log onto www.pgalinks.com , click on Events and PGA Annual Meeting as shown on the following page.

Up to 15 MSR credits may be earned for attending the two day session if you pre-register and attend both days of the meeting. It is a great opportunity to network with PGA members from across the country and be exposed to the Governance of the Association. Here’s to cooler weather and a prosperous overseed for those facilities undergoing this agronomic event in the coming days and weeks ahead.

Respectfully, Curt Hudek, PGA

Tournament Registration Late Fee The Southwest Section PGA Officers and Board have established a $30 tournament registration late fee for all Southwest Section PGA events. Each event will have a registration deadline. Any entries accepted after the deadline will be subject to the appropriate late fee penalty. Rules of Golf

More Real Incidents – September 12, 2013 – The Rulings Player A’s approach shot on a long par-4 hole lands beyond the putting green near spectators. A young boy runs out, picks up the ball and brings it back to his father. The father takes the ball, walks toward the putting green and carefully places the ball on the spot where it originally lay. When Player A and a nearby tournament official approach the green, the father explains what had happened and provides sufficient certainty to the tournament official that the ball was replaced on the exact spot where it had originally come to rest. **The ball was replaced on the exact spot but not by the player or the person who moved the ball, the young boy. The tournament official asked Player A to mark and lift the ball and then replace the ball on the spot from where it was lifted. The ball was now properly in play. See Rule 20-3a. Player B’s ball lies on a paved cart path. Player B correctly determines the nearest point of relief and drops the ball just within one club-length of that point, not nearer the hole and no re-drop is required, the ball did not roll from where it landed. Player B hits the ball about 100 yards directly towards the green. A fellow-competitor approaches Player B and convinces Player B that the Rules require the ball to be dropped two club-lengths from the cart path. Player B measures and drops another ball two club-lengths from the nearest point of relief and completes the hole with the second dropped ball. **After playing the ball that was dropped when correctly taking relief from the paved cart path, the ball was in play and the location was known. Rule 13-1 was the applicable Rule. Player B substituted a ball when not authorized and played from a wrong place. The breaches of Rule 15-2 and Rule 20-7 result in a single two-stroke penalty in stroke play or loss of hole in match play. In stroke play, there was no serious breach. See Decision 18-2a/8.5 and Note 3 under Rule 20-7. [One could make a case that Player B proceeded under Rule 27-1a, however, the location of the ball was known and the ball was not dropped where the previous stroke was played nor was it dropped with the intent to proceed under penalty of stroke and distance.]

Page 24 Drive Chip and Putt Championship The inaugural year of the Drive, Chip, and Putt qualifying stages are complete and for 8 juniors (age 7-15) from the Southwest they have secured a spot in the national finals at Augusta National April 6, 2014, Sunday before the Masters. Ten local qualifying sites hosted close to 1,000 registered juniors throughout the Southwest Section in June and July. From that stage 153 qualifiers were treated to a great weekend at the Southwest Regional Qualifier at Grayhawk Golf Club on August 25. Top scorers in each skill and those who qualified were awarded medals and qualifiers were interviewed by a crew from the Golf Channel. They all seemed right at home in the interview chair. My thanks to Host Professional Joe Shershenovich and his staff at Grayhawk for doing such a great job hosting the regional qualifier and coming up with one of the best ideas of the year, milkshakes during early registration! Thanks also to the 10 PGA Professional (listed below) who stepped up to host one of the local events and the dozens who helped as a staff member or volunteer to make these events successful. As a first year program we dealt with some unknowns and I was very impressed with the professional manner and hard work of SWSPGA Members who went above and beyond to put on an impressive series of qualifiers.

It seems too obvious to mention but statistics confirm that facilities that are highly engaged in Player Development and Player Retention Programs run more play, generate more return play, and more revenue. Think about restaurants, people are drawn to the busy spots that have things going on with a fun theme and value. Everyone wants a table at the restaurant that is hard to get into with a fun atmosphere, while the empty restaurant remains empty. Business creates more business and like the successful restaurateur we need to create new events to keep our facilities fresh and the cool place to be. Now is the time of year to create your 2014 plan! With just a few months left before the snow birds and winter visitors arrive, and with many of you closing for over seeding, this is the time to do your program and event planning for the coming season. I am here to help you create your 2014 Player Development Business Plan and to support you in building the programs that work in your situation and for your community.
