Dear Members and Apprentices, Congratulations to the three Southwest Section PGA members who competed in the field of 263 Players in the Southworth Senior Professional National Championship at Port St Lucie, Florida this month. This event was originally “rained-out” last fall in Virginia and moved to Florida this Spring. The change seemed to work out OK for our participants. Mike Malaska, Ralph West (T47) and Jon Stanley (T58) all played well enough to make the “cut” of Top 70 and ties (a total of 90 Players made the cut!). On the final day Mike Malaska birdied 2 of the last 3 holes to finish T23 and earn a trip to play in the Senior PGA Championship to be held May 22-25 at Harbor Shores, Benton Harbor, Michigan. Well done gentlemen. Special thanks to Tim Eberlein and Ralph West for their work in coordinating a 2 day education summit that featured both a business and teaching track. The 2 day event featured ten different presenters and was attended by more than 75 SWSPGA members and apprentices. Up to 12 MSR’s were earned by the participants. We anticipate that a similar event will be conducted in the Spring of 2015 with the end of the MSR cycle falling on June 15, 2015. Special thanks to the members and staff at The Foothills Golf Club.

The campaign trail for Michael Haywood heads to Atlanta next week for the final Super Regional event. The Leadership from the final ten sections will meet and have discussions with the three candidates. The election will take place in Indianapolis at the annual meeting in November of this year. Best of luck to our Northern Arizona clubs as the begin to see the migration of members and guests to their clubs for the upcoming season—and congratulations to our members in the “deserts” regions of our Section that have had a successful start to 2014. Respectfully, Curt Hudek, PGA Executive Director

Water Hazard Troubles – March 6, 2014 – The Ruling A player’s ball played from the fairway comes to rest in a water hazard near the putting green in a difficult lie. The player plays the ball as it lies in the water hazard and the ball flies over the putting green into another water hazard behind the putting green. The player returns to where he had played his stroke in the fairway and plays a substituted ball from as nearly as possible to where he had last played from outside a water hazard. The player completes the hole and continues the round. How does the Committee rule on this incident? **The player has proceeded in accordance with Rule 26-2a(iii) and incurred a penalty of one stroke for relief from the water hazard.
