AWGA Recognition Dinner Meet AWGA Executive Director Mary Pomroy

Follow us on

The Year 2014 2014 is off to one of the best “weather” starts for our market in many years. Hopefully this has meant a nice increase in play over the prior year and a good start against your budgets. Please note: Do NOT use this year’s numbers as a baseline for next year’s budget---this was a very unusual year! Some items of interest at the SWSPGA: Job Opportunity at SWSPGA As the SWSPGA moves forward there is a need to add a staff person to meet the goals and expectations of our local association in the areas of the Junior Golf, Tournament Operations and Membership Services. With Frank Calvin’s assumption of the bulk of marketing and sponsorships responsibilities, it is expected that this new individual will play a large role in the conduct and coordination of the Junior Golf activities, but will also assist with Tournament Operations, the Golf Pass and other section responsibilities depending on their areas of interest and skill set. Details on this position can be found at pgalinks.com in the Job Seeker postings, in this monthly update or by contacting Mike Martino of the SWSPGA office. Certified Program As outlined at the semi-annual meeting the SWSPGA has expressed interest in supporting our professionals in earning a PGA Certification in the coming year. The support, which will come from Sponsors, will include a reimbursement for the purchase of the initial library of $350 (reimbursement will not be made for the testing fees) and be reimbursed upon the completion of the certification. It is our goal to create coordinated “teams” of professionals through these programs over the course of the next ten months and complete a certification by the end of 2014. The program offers four certifications:  General Management  Golf Operations  Teaching & Coaching  Player Development Page 3 While we have a short list of interested participants on hand, you may express your interest in participating in this program by emailing me directly at chudek@pgahq.com . Please indicate which of the four certifications you are interested in obtaining.

The initial “library” purchase will be the same for all of the above certifications. We will coordinate a conference call on the evenings of February 18th and 19th to assess participation. Haywood for President The field of candidates for the 2014 PGA of America Secretary Position currently consists of three PGA professionals. More can be seen about all of the candidates on PGA links at http://www.pgalinks.com/professionals/index.cfm?ctc=4992 . We will be traveling and supporting Michael Haywood at four Super Regional Events to be held in Newark, NJ; Chicago, IL; Los Angeles, CA and Atlanta, GA during March and April. We look forward to the opportunity to highlight the experience and vision of Michael’s leadership and what he can bring to our association. Respectfully, Curt Hudek, PGA

Through your continued support, we are able to host the PGA Compensation Survey to help provide our PGA Professionals with key compensation data that is valid and meaningful. This survey provides key information to assist with performance evaluations, contract renewals, staff budgeting and other employer/ employee interactions. Thus allowing PGA Professionals and their employers to know where they stand on the compensation scale in comparison with fellow Professionals, both locally and on a broader scale based on a variety of factors. We are asking you to complete this survey before March 19th so we can continue to provide PGA members and apprentices with the best available compensation data. You can receive up to two MSR credits by completing the survey by the deadline. Page 7

SCHOLARSHIP SEARCH TIPS 





 



 

There are many scholarship opportunities available, so never limit yourself to applying for just one. Research as many funding sources as you can, and learn which ones you may qualify for, then apply promptly. Find at least two search engines with which you’re comfortable – use both to search for scholarship opportunities. Two good examples include www.fastweb.com and www.scholarships.com. Remember to check the schools that you are applying to. Many schools offer scholarships to students that seek them. If receiving lots of e-mail from a search engine bothers you, set up a scholarship only e-mail account. This will keep all of your scholarship information in one place, your regular in-box won’t be overflowing, and when you use your scholarship e-mail, you are more focused on searching for scholarship information. Organize the information in a way that makes sense to you. For example, when using Fastweb, click on the “deadline” heading to sort the scholarships according to deadline. Look where you are going! If you are headed for a specific field, look at the leaders in that field or industry, check their websites for scholarship opportunities. For example, a pre-nursing or pre-med student should check out websites for drug manufacturers or companies that do medical research. Most company’s websites are searchable. Try searching “scholarships”. If that doesn’t yield results, try “foundation” or “philanthropy”. Look at local organizations/groups such as community foundations, religious organizations, Parks and Recreation, fraternities or sororities, town or city clubs, civic groups such as the American Legion, YMCA, 4-H Club, Elks, Kiwanis, Jaycees and the Girl or Boy Scouts. Beware of scams and services that will search for financial aid money for you for a fee. You should not have to pay for this information. Visit local public libraries for scholarship books – often near “jobs and careers” section, good for exploration – don’t use books that are more than one year old. TIPS TO FILLING OUT YOUR SCHOLARSHIP APPLICATION







 

 

When you are requested to send a photograph this must be a business-like photo. One you would submit for a job interview. This means no prom photos, no photos on the beach, no cleavage, no eyebrow, nose or lip rings, showing tattoos, no extreme haircuts, etc. Look professional. Don’t wait until the last minute to request your transcript be sent – you are not the only student requesting and sometimes there is a 10-30 day back-up at your high school or college. It is up to you to make sure it gets to our office by the deadline. Remember, due to limited funding, not all applicants receive scholarships. The process is competitive and you should be careful and thorough when filling out your application to give yourself the best possible advantage. Do not assume that because you received a scholarship previously that you will automatically receive another award. Be aware that there are always new students competing for awards. If you want to be taken seriously, consider getting a generic email address rather than a cutesy one like “jellybean07”, “pimpstress”, “superman” or “lopezlover”. Email is used as a form of contact with applicants. Don’t let a parent fill out the application, it is your responsibility Proofread your application Page 10

Seasonal Opportunity The Collindale Golf Academy is looking for an enthusiastic, motivated seasonal club-fitter. We are located in beautiful Fort Collins, CO just 5 miles away from the bases of the Rocky Mountains and 15 minutes from the Colorado State University. This position runs from April 15th - August 15. This individual is expected to have at least a working knowledge of club fitting but award winning Director of Instruction, Vince Buelk PGA, will train on all of our club fitting systems and launch monitor. The club-fitter may also be called upon to assist with junior clinics which would add some additional income. We believe there is room for more income for an outgoing self-starter that is willing to promote the position using social media/working the range/etc. Ideally, and in the past, this position has been filled by someone who wants to get out of the southern heat during the summer. Compensation/Benefits: This is strictly a commission based position and the last two seasons averaged an $11,000 income for each 4-month season. The golf course is owned by the City of Fort Collins and ALL full time staff pays a token $3 per nine holes to walk or ride and no time restrictions of when they can play. Driving range use is unlimited. Our onsite restaurant (CB Potts) extends to us 50% discounts at all times, not just when we are working. We do a tremendous amount of club sales which allows us to have multiple options for professional staff agreements (we try to keep our professionals on different staffs). Uniform is not required but an adequate clothing allowance will be provided with a PUD and at cost discounts also available. There are no medical or 401k benefits. The Collindale Golf Course is a very popular public golf course known for its challenge, tight fairways, fast greens and is a yearly US Open qualifying site. The driving range has the best turf and range balls in town and stays VERY busy on a daily basis!! Please email your resumes to Vince Buelk, PGA by Feb 15th to vinceb@collindalegolfacademy.com

Qualifiers! When people think of the Waste Management Phoenix Open at TPC Scottsdale, they think of the infamous 16th hole and the party style atmosphere. The starting field size for this event is capped at 136 players. What most of the spectators don’t realize is how the final three participants earn entry into the event. The Southwest Section PGA conducts a series of qualifiers (section, pre-qualifier and Monday qualifier) to determine those final three spots. On the Thursday preceding the Monday qualifier an open pre-qualifier is conducted. A total of 330 participants competed in the pre-qualifier split amongst four golf courses. When play concluded on Thursday, 31 (the low six scores and ties at each site) advanced to the Monday qualifier. The Southwest Section PGA in conjunction with the PGA Tour conducted the Waste Management Phoenix Open Monday qualifier on Monday, January 27, 2014. The Monday qualifier included 115 Tour professionals, 31 pre-qualifiers and 2 Section qualifiers all looking to earn one of those three spots into the Waste Management Phoenix Open. When the final score was posted Tuesday morning; Ki Taek Lee a freshman at Arizona State University was atop the leaderboard qualifying for his first PGA Tour event. Lee shot a 7-under 65 at McCormick Ranch Golf Club (Pine Course). The amateurs round was highlighted by 8 birdies and 1 eagle. PGA Tour professionals Danny Lee and Chris Smith were the two other successful qualifiers. These three will join Paul Trittler (Southwest Section PGA Champion) in the Waste Management Phoenix Open as four of 473 participants who attempted to qualify for this event.

Rules of Golf

OK Actions? – September 28, 2013 – The Rulings Player A’s ball lies closely behind a mushroom growing in the turf on his line of play. Prior to playing the ball, Player A makes a practice swing destroying the mushroom. **Not-OK. Player A incurs the general penalty for a breach of Rule 13-2. Not-OK to break anything growing or fixed if it improves the lie, area of intended stance or swing, or line of play. Considering the location of the mushroom relative to the location of the ball, Player A clearly improved his area of intended swing and line of play. (See Rule 13-2 and Decision 13-2/0.5.) Player B’s ball lands in the fairway making a pitch-mark and rolls back about 12 inches behind the pitch-mark. Player B, prior to his next stroke with a 9-iron, steps on the pitch-mark. **Player B’s actions are OK as long as the repair of the pitch-mark does not create a potential advantage for Player B’s next stroke. Based on the position of the ball relative to the pitch-mark and the stroke to be played, a ruling of OK is appropriate. (See Rule 13-2 and Decision 13-2/0.5.) Player C’s ball comes to rest in a great lie in a shallow bunker. Prior to making a stroke from the bunker, Player C rakes several footprints several feet behind his ball and some minor damage several feet in front of his ball on his line of play. [Player C is a single-digit golfer and believes that bunkers should be perfect for the following players in the field.] **Player C’s actions are OK. As long as Player C is not raking the bunker with an intent to test the bunker, Player C is permitted to rake areas not affecting lie, area of intended stance or swing solely for care of the course. Player C is also permitted to rake his line of play as long as the action has not created a potential advantage for Player C, a reasonable ruling for this situation as described. (See Exception 2 to Rule 13-4 and Decision 13-2/0.5.)
