From the Desk of Curt Hudek, PGA

It is that time of year already, Southern Arizona and Las Vegas are heading into the summer season while the Northern Arizona Climate is gearing up for hopefully a good summer. There is a lot on the Tournament front in June to go along with the SWSPGA Annual Meeting and the new Drive Chip and Putt program being co-promoted by Augusta National Golf Club, PGA of America and the USGA. Winners of the regional event this summer will compete in the finals at Augusta National Golf Club the Sunday before The Masters in 2014. First and foremost I would ask that you take a close look at the Candidate Bio’s included in this month’s update. We have two quality candidates for Secretary and several prospective Board of Director candidates who have submitted a bio for your review. There are other candidates that will be providing information and we will forward them to you upon receipt. If you have ever had an interest in the governance of the association at the Section Level this will be a great year to get involved. Finally we are STRONGLY ENCOURAGING individuals who are looking for a partner to play in “Team Events” – such as the Annual Meeting Pro-Pro event ---to contact Mike Burhans of the SWSPGA office by email, phone or text and we will pair you up for this great “networking” opportunity. Looking forward to seeing many of you on June 10th at the Wildhorse Pass Hotel and Casino---please note Coat and Tie required for the meeting—see directions included in this document. Curt Hudek

Matt Anzalone, PGA My name is Matt Anzalone and I am a class “A” PGA professional and member of the Southwest Section of the PGA of America. I was born in 1986 in Racine, WI, and my family moved to Scottsdale, AZ where I graduated from Desert Mountain high school in 2005. In high school I played three years of varsity golf finishing 2nd all three years as a team in state and placing 12th individually my senior year. I was offered a scholarship to play collegiate golf at Loyola in Chicago. Having such a strong passion for the game I wanted to pursue a career in the golf industry. I attend Arizona State University graduating in 2009 with a degree in Agribusiness and Professional Golf Management. I have been a class “A” PGA member since 2009 and have worked within the Wisconsin and Southwest sections since 2005. I am currently employed as the Head Golf Professional at Gainey Ranch Golf Club. Gainey Ranch is a 27 hole private facility that is owned and managed by Club Corp of America and has a resort component. I am in my second year as Head Golf Professional, sixth season at Gainey Ranch and just recently received a National Club Corp Award of “Rising Star”. The Rising Star award recognizes Club Corp employees who have been with his or her property for less than 18 months or are less than 18 months in a new role. They are employees who, despite their brief tenure, have already demonstrated a passion for building relationships and enriching lives of his or her fellow employee partners, members, and/or guests.

I would like to be considered for a board position with the Southwest Section of the PGA to impact the game of golf and the Southwest Section in several ways. I feel that I can assist building enthusiasm for juniors and upcoming women golfers. As a former participant and current coordinator of annual junior events such as the AJGA Junior All-Star event and the Thunderbird High School Classic which are held at Gainey Ranch Golf Club, I bring a unique perspective. I am also working with The National Women’s Golf Alliance to promote, engage and grow women’s golf. I was invited by the NWGA to speak to golf course owners and managers on this topic in October. I understand the time commitments as a Southwest Section board member and have full support from my general manager, Jim Murphy a past president. I am willing to dedicate myself as much as needed and I am excited to learn more about the Southwest Section, its history, current challenges and future opportunities. If elected a goal of mine will be to contribute as much as possible to make the Southwest Section the strongest section in the PGA in order to have a bright, prosperous future for apprentices and current members. Thank you for your consideration, Matt Anzalone Head Golf Professional, PGA Gainey Ranch Golf Club

Relief Situations? – May 14, 2013 – The Rulings Player A’s ball lies among several rocks where Player A could not possibly play a stroke. Player A’s stance is on a paved cart path. Player A agrees that he cannot play the ball as it lies but argues that he is entitled to relief. (Rocks are through the green and integral parts of the course.) **Player A is not entitled to relief since there is interference by something other than the obstruction that makes the stroke “clearly impracticable”. See the Exception under Rule 24-2. Player B’s ball has come to rest on top of an 8-foot stone wall that has the status of an obstruction. Player B agrees that he cannot play the ball as it lies but argues that he is entitled to relief. **Player B is entitled to relief without penalty. The ball lies on an immovable obstruction and neither a) or b) in the Exception under Rule 24-2 applies to the situation. There is nothing other than the obstruction affecting the stroke and the ball clearly has interference by the obstruction. [LuckyAZ and I are collaborating on a Key Concepts Document that addresses the Exceptions to Rule 24-2 and Rule 25-1 and the exception statement in Decision 1-4/10.]

Player Development Message:

Page 30

The start of a New Year, peak golf season for some while others have just started their offseason. Despite seasonal differences we all have the opportunity to be experts in golf for those we touch at our courses, clubs, and communities. I hope one of your 2013 resolutions is to evaluate the player development plan at your facility and to take positive steps to add new programs and events this coming season. Your efforts will increase play and increase your value. In my role as Player Development Manager I’m thrilled to see the great work that is being done to grow the passion for our game here in the Southwest Section. We have PGA Members that have been innovative in creating programs and events that meet the goals of Golf 2.0. We have many professionals that really understand the value in retaining avid players and attracting new and returning players. There is no shortage of efforts to grow golf and we should all be appreciative of the efforts that many are making each and every day. Our SWPGA Board has decided to make annual award to a member that exemplifies efforts in the area of Player Development. We share a common mission to grow the game of golf, and like recognizing our best players and best teachers we should recognize exceptional efforts in player development. This year I congratulate Josh Doxtator, PGA Head Professional at Trilogy Golf Club at Vistancia, for his exemplary efforts for being recognized as SWPGA Player Development Award Winner. With one program Josh has found a method to reach core players, to engage lapsed golfers and to develop new players. The story of the G.A.L.S. program that is has evolved to include over 220 this season is an inspiration and a shining example of what PGA experts are doing at their facilities. No matter where you are in your player development planning process please contact me if I can help provide you resources or ideas that will make an impact for your facility growing the number of players and creating a fun and welcome atmosphere. Happy New Year! I hope you and those you touch hit many more good shots in 2013! Bob Doyle, PGA Player Development Regional Manager bdoyle@pgahq.com 602-304-0397
