Introduction The 2014 Sheffield Doc/Fest saw the Festival celebrating its 21st anniversary - with a new look, new dates and new venues - this year’s Festival was the most exciting to date! A record 3,263 delegates descended on Sheffield for six days of films, sessions, networking and parties, an increase of 4.3% year on year. Delegates were joined by a greater number of the public with 26,721 attendees watching films and sessions and taking part in activities geared to engage the public, up 13.7% on last year’s public numbers.

!

The opening night set the bar high with an ambitious triple bill of events. The first, perhaps our most prestigious opening night film to date was PULP: A Film about Life, Death & Supermarkets (Dir: Florian Habicht, UK) at Sheffield’s City Hall. This was followed by Miners Shot Down (Dir: Rehad Desai, South Africa) at Showroom Cinema and Happiness (Dir: Thomas Balmes, France/Finland) screening in a Cave in the Peak District. The film programme was as packed and eclectic as ever with 13 World Premieres including a screening of the greatly anticipated A 50 Year Argument directed by Martin Scorsese, who answered questions after the screening on Skype. Grayson Perry and Sue Perkins were the highlights of the public facing session programme. Other sessions popular with the Sheffield public included Jon Snow In Conversation, Rebels of Oz featuring Germaine Greer, and Adam Buxton presents A Bug Special: David Bowie. Our partnership with Documentary Campus presented a great line up of sessions to industry delegates. Delegates looking to learn about the craft and business of documentary were well catered for with BAFTA’s masterclass with Olly Lambert, commissioning panels discussing the latest priorities of international factual broadcasters, and a session from this year’s Lifetime Achievement Award winner, Roger Graef, marking his 50 years in documentary. 2014 saw the return of Doc/Fest’s Live Music programme which included How We Used to Live with a live soundtrack performed by Saint Etienne, Beyond Clueless with Summer Camp playing live, and He Who Gets Slapped with a performance by Will Gregory from Goldfrapp, along with other live shows. For the 21st Festival, Docs/Fest awarded 21 inspiration awards to individuals that have shown a great contribution to documentary film and have inspired young filmmakers and audiences to love documentary the world over. The Festival awarded the major 2014 Inspiration Award to Laura Poitras. New venues for 2014 included the Millennium Gallery for Doc/Fest’s Interactive at Sheffield Exhibition - which was open to the public free of charge, and also the Festival Lounge in Tudor Square, an inflatable venue with cafes, bars and outdoor seating areas. This was a favourite venue for 2014!

Film Programme The 2014 film programme was an eclectic mix of shorts, features and cross-platform projects from around the world tackling a broad range of subject matters. 152 films were screened across the festival selected from 1912 submissions.

A major focus this year was to increase public audience numbers. Outdoor screens have proved popular with Sheffield public audiences. Along with Howard Street Screen we introduced two new outdoor screens - Peace Gardens and South Street Amphitheatre, showing great films for free to a public audience. To celebrate the World Premiere of Doc/Fest’s latest archive film commission in association with BFI, BBC and Crossover, we held a special screening on the grounds of Chatsworth. Directed by Kim Longinotto, and with an original soundtrack from Richard Hawley, ’Love Is All: 100 Years of Love & Courtship’ screened to an audience of 2,000 in a stunning outdoor setting at Chatsworth. Doc/Fest has increasingly become a place for highly anticipated films. We had 13 World Premiere screenings, including A 50 Year Argument, Alasdair Gray: A Life in Progress and Still The Enemy Within.

Videotheque Doc/Fest hosts one of the world's few fully-digitised film festival libraries, allowing our film festival pass holders to view a selection of films from the programme. We also invite up to 155 specially selected films to participate in the Videotheque from this year's submissions, these are films we feel would benefit greatly from sales and acquisition opportunities in the Videotheque. These films are invited with sales, distribution, broadcast, and festival acquisitions in mind.

!

Since we started the Videotheque in 2006 it has become one of the best places in the world to get films seen and sold. Due to festival pass holder interest, we introduced an online version of the Videotheque in 2011 and Doc/Fest delegates credit it as one of the best and smoothest online viewing platforms around. The Videotheque offers unrivalled UK and international acquisition potential for films.

!

Sheffield Doc/Fest’s Videotheque expanded this year, receiving a design and technical upgrade in order to make the user experience its best ever. The Videotheque was designed by Dias.

!

Films included in Videotheque have superior support and attention from our Videotheque Manager, Film team, Marketplace and dedicated social media channels. They are helped to spread the word in the run-up to the festival and offering filmmakers the ability to connect to key Decision Makers. This year saw 155 paid entries bringing in ÂŁ23,567 of income, a new record. In 2014 we introduced a stronger presence of the Videotheque within the Festival programme. To welcome filmmakers with films in the Videotheque and encourage networking with Decision Makers, we held a Videotheque drinks reception on the Sunday evening at the Novotel, which was a very popular event.

Marketplace Sheffield Doc/Fest offers extensive marketplace opportunities for all delegates. In 2014 a record 312 executives, distributors, commissioners, funders, advisors and buyers across documentary and digital media attended the festival from across the UK, the rest of Europe and the world. The MeetMarket, Sheffield’s primary pitching opportunity had 63 projects from 19 countries across 5 continents being pitched, selected from 605 submissions. These projects were part of 1500 meetings over two days. At present (August 2014) over £32.9 Million worth of deals have been reported to have been made at Doc/Fest this year. Alongside our primary pitching event, MeetMarket, we offered filmmakers alternative marketplace initiatives, including Round Tables, Pour Hours and the new ‘Meet…’ format, which included specialist sessions with Channel 4 First Cut, Radio 4, VICE, Getty Images, BBC Production Talent Network and more. In 2014 we hosted the second Crossover Market in Sheffield, running parallel to the MeetMarket. As well as being able to pitch ideas to cross-platform commissioners and experienced digital producers, selected projects were offered a chance to meet with digital agencies, brands, third sector representatives, and other potential supporters from outside of the traditional film and TV industries.

Speakers Similarly to the film programme an emphasis was placed on engaging the public in the sessions programme. This was achieved by attracting high profile public figures and hosting their session in the Crucible, a venue with a built in public audience and marketing reach. The sessions and masterclasses below were open to public booking and advertised across local and regional publications. This along with the live event sessions at the Crucible and Chatsworth contributed to the major increase in box office income.

Interactive at Sheffield Interactive content has long been part of Sheffield Doc/Fest’s remit but 2014 saw greater emphasis placed on the growing field of interactivity with the ambition of both furthering the form with sessions and presentations for industry delegates and delivering an exhibition for the public to help develop broader audiences for interactive work.

!

Doc/Fest’s Interactive at Sheffield Exhibition housed over 20 projects spanning desktop computers, tablets, smart phones, projections and virtual reality headsets. With tablets and games consoles increasing in proliferation as mediums of content delivery, audiences are demanding greater interactivity within their media, so using Xbox controllers and iPads as host devices for many of the projects gave attendees familiar devices with which to explore the projects.

Venues To accommodate the growth of the Festival, we worked with some new venues in Sheffield City Centre to house more film screenings, sessions and events.

We held outdoor screenings in Peace Gardens and South Street Amphitheatre, as well as Howard Street, to encourage more general public to take part in the Festival.

For a second year we held screenings in a Cave at the Devils Arse, Castleton. In 2014 the Cave served as a screening venue for four nights of the Festival.

For the first time we created a new venue in Tudor Square - The Festival Lounge - an inflatable structure open day and night with bars and cafes run by local businesses from Sheffield.

For the World Premiere of Doc/Fest’s latest film commission Love Is All, we couldn't think of a more perfect place for this special screening than the stunning grounds of Chatsworth House.

In 2014 Doc/Fest returned to Millennium Gallery to house the Interactive at Sheffield Exhibition and some of the Festival’s evening social events.

Sheffield City Hall was the perfect venue for our Opening Night Film, PULP: A Film About Life, Death & Supermarkets. Other events included An Evening With Grayson Perry. Both events attracted an audience of over 2,000.
