We started PARLEE a decade ago with the goal to build the best performing race bike in the world. At that time, carbon fiber was overlooked in the road bike market despite all the success in motorsports, aerospace and defense. In the late 1990’s most race bikes were aluminum or titanium. However, based on what I learned about materials in my 20 years building racing boats, I knew that with the right sized tubes, and the right fiber lay-up, and proper molding techniques, carbon fiber would be the best choice for creating fast, light and comfortable racing bikes. Ten years on, it is plain to see, my instincts were right. Carbon is now the material of choice for professional and recreational riders. No major bike manufacturer is without carbon fiber in their road lineup. The question now, for the rider, is not what material to choose, but which carbon fiber bike to choose and why? What makes this choice challenging is the incredible amount of marketing-driven clutter and confusion regarding carbon fiber — tube shapes, inserts, mixed materials, modulus, etc. Every company claims to use the highest strength materials and the most advanced techniques available, but what is the real deal? The reality is that carbon fiber has enabled bicycles to be styled much the way that cars can be. For the first 100 years that bicycles have been tubular metal truss structures, there was little styling that could be done beyond paint jobs. This is true for steel, aluminum and titanium bikes, even now. Carbon fiber, however, allows a bicycle designer or stylist to shape a mold in just about any form and it can be engineered to at least be in the realm of what would be considered acceptable performance. Many bicycle companies have jumped on the carbon fiber bandwagon for this very reason. Carbon is a great engineering material, but the ability to style bikes can mislead the rider into mistaking looks for performance. I am not a stylist. I am a designer and builder of race bikes. I design and build fast, light, durable and comfortable bikes — qualities that were once considered mutually exclusive in bike building. Because of this, you will not see unnecessary shapes in my designs. The guiding principle for PARLEE is efficiency. The key to pushing performance is to use carbon fiber strategically to maximize its characteristics. Carbon fiber is perfect for building bikes because it has such a high strength to weight ratio. This is why the styling makes no sense. All it does is add weight and take away from ride quality. It is akin to putting fins a car — they may look cool, but they are not going to make it perform better. Efficient use of material leads to good performance. This unrelenting focus on efficiency in our designs leads to better performance. Better acceleration. Better tracking on technical descents. Lighter weights. Unmatched durability. Remarkable comfort. That is what sets PARLEE apart. I invite you to learn more about our history and products in our catalog or visit us online at parleecycles.com.

THE EVOLUTION OF PARLEE — 9 GROUND BREAKING MODELS In the last ten years, PARLEE has pioneered many industry firsts; from the first customizable carbon fiber racing frames to FLEX-FIT semi-custom geometry to the industry’s first sub-800 gram carbon fiber frames. But unlike other manufacturers, the development of our line of bikes has been organic. “I’ve always loved scribbling out an idea and then moving to the Bridgeport to create complicated molds,” says Bob. “By constantly thinking how can we make our bikes better, it has allowed our line to evolve, with each model building on the success of its predecessor.”

THE PARLEE PROCESS To understand how the perfect balance of performance, comfort and durability is achieved in a PARLEE, one must look at our bike-building process. PARLEE is the leading manufacturer of custom carbon bikes. All of our models are offered in stock sizes as well. PARLEE stock bikes are built using the same process as our custom bikes. Each is built with uncompromising care and attention to detail. With any of our bikes the process begins at one of our authorized bike dealers worldwide. Trained technicians take precise measurements and gather the pertinent information about what the customer wants in his or her bike’s performance. All this information is passed on to us. Using our internally developed CAD system, we assure that the riders fit matches the bike perfectly. Carbon tubes are selected based on desired ride qualities and individual rider characteristics. These tubes are then precisely mitered in a process that combines old world craftsmanship with cutting edge materials and construction methods. “The build time is around 40 hours — more than four times longer than the average custom bike,” says Bob. Everything that goes on one of our frames has WWW.PARLEECYCLES.COM 2

been designed and constructed at PARLEE. We make our own carbon fittings, cable stops and front derailleur clamps in house. By designing and building parts specific to our bikes, we are able to create the lightest, most durable interfaces between the frame and components and as such some of the lightest, most durable bikes on the market. The integrity of each PARLEE frame begins with the high modulus, uni-directional, carbon fiber tubing and parts. All tubes and sub-assemblies are produced exclusively to Bob’s design and specifications. Upon arrival each tube is meticulously inspected, then mitered to size. All tubes are then inspected again, ends cleaned and media blasted. “It is about creating perfect surfaces to work with,” says Bob. “Perfect surface prep leads to long term durability.” All PARLEE frames are backed by a lifetime warranty. When it is time to start building, rider-specific tubing is assembled on a specially designed jig accurate to sub 1mm tolerances. The lugs are assembled by hand around the mitered tubes and become an integral part of the frame. This allows for angular adjustment of the lugs, as well as customization of stiffness. Each lug is comprised of over 100 separate pieces of carbon fiber each placed with a different fiber orientation. “What’s important is that you have the fiber orientation correct because that is what gives the frame its strength, and ride quality,” says Bob. The frames are then put through a proprietary heating and pressurization process that bonds the frame together. “We’ve developed our own molding processes to get the best parts and consistent surface finish,” says Bob. The frames are then hand sanded, cleaned and the small parts are installed. The final touches are applied in our paint booth where the customer has unlimited color choices to create a truly unique bike. After painting, the frames undergo a painstaking process of wet sanding with progressively finer grit paper, then buffed to a mirror-like shine. “Our process is exacting and done for the love of creating bikes that perform exceptionally well,” says Bob, adding. “It is really a great feeling knowing you’ve built something that satisfies each person’s unique wishes for a bike.”

“I’ve had a number of custom bikes built — some I’ve liked more than others. But I’ve never had a bike built that does what this bike does: completely and perfectly fulfill what I want in terms of fit, handling and ride quality. It is, without question, the finest road machine I’ve ever ridden” — Matt Philips BICYCLING Magazine

THE PARLEE CUSTOM PROGRAM In addition to the quality of our bikes, what sets PARLEE apart is our unmatched ability to customize our frames and bikes. We can customize your bike for fit, ride quality and paint scheme. But the most important aspect of any custom bike dialogue between the rider, the fitter/retailer and us. If you are considering a custom bike, please call us 9-6pm EST on (978) 977.7474. We are happy to discuss any aspect of the process. Here is a quick look at what we can customize for you. GEOMETRY/FIT: We can alter the geometry of the frame by 1/10th of a degree angularly and 1mm linearly to accommodate virtually all fit needs. Depending on who you talk to, anywhere from 10% to 90% of riders “need” custom geometry. Our opinion is fewer riders need it now than a decade ago, but we also have the luxury in our range of using three types of geometry with the bikes we sell — stock, FLEX-FIT, and custom. We can build custom geometry on the Z1, Z2, Z3, CX, Track and TT platforms. All custom designs are created in our proprietary CAD system (available to our clients and dealers as a PDF via email) that models all the rider contact points along with the actual frame geometry to assure that what is planned will work flawlessly. RIDE TUNING: Think of all the adjectives used by cyclists to describe their bikes: stiff, smooth, comfortable, responsive, stable and so on. All of these subjective qualities are based on a blend of tube diameters, fiber composition, fiber orientation along with angular and length permutations. Knowing what tubes to use for each rider comes from years of test riding and feedback using a broad spectrum of riders and design elements. Most bikes in the market are NOT tunable for ride quality as they are built exactly the same each time. The frame has to be designed for the law of averages and most manufacturers don’t reveal what they 3

Most manufacturers build either stock or custom geometry only, almost none have options in between. We do Our industry first semicustom geometry, FLEX FIT, allows for 2 to 2.5 cm of head tube customization on our Z1, Z2, Z3, Z5, CX and TT models — effectively doubling our number of stock sizes.

consider “average”. Some base all their averages on ProTour riders, some use the same tube set across the whole size range as it is cheaper. We have our proprietary formulas for our stock (Z4, Z5 and TT) bikes and most agree that we have a nice balance across our size range, but we have the ability to tune things very precisely for each individual athlete as well. So if you are 6’8” or 5’2” or 300lbs or 125lbs, we can tune the bike to suit your individual needs. The ride quality and handling can be tuned on the Z1, Z2, Z3, CX and TT Custom. Because of our unique construction process, we can customize not just the tubes, but also the joints (lugs) to further match the performance to the riders needs. We have five individual tube sets produced to our own specifications (i.e. no “off the shelf” tubes or parts are used) that we can mix and match. Here are quick summaries of each. The UD is our standard custom uni-directional (UD) tube set, perfect for most riders up to 220lbs. Designed and built

CL exclusively for us, refined over hundreds of thousands of miles ridden, this is the benchmark for all carbon tube sets. SL A lighter version of the UD tube set specifically optimized for lighter total frame weight with

SL

CL

no compromise in durability or ride quality. The SL is the lightest rational tube set available. The X is similar in performance and road feel to our UD tube set, but with

CL

a 3K woven outer layer for cosmetics and a bit more muted road feel.

SL

Our extra stiff tube set features approximately 40% more torsional stiffness, with less than 100g penalty over the standard

CL UD tube set. The XL is really only needed by the largest, most powerful riders or in certain situations, i.e. Z1 track frame sets.

SL CL

The new standard in comfort. Ideal for smaller statured riders, or those looking for the ultimate in comfort, without losing performance.

NOTE: All tube sets can be mixed (at no extra charge) on Z1/2/3/CX/Tour/Track to perfectly meet each riders needs. Call us to discuss your perfect tubing set up.

AESTHETICS/FINISH: Generally when purchasing a bicycle there are one or two stock color schemes to pick from. With our unique build-to-order process, all of our models can have the finish customized. That can mean selecting from one of our 15 standard decal choices or selecting a custom panel scheme or painting the bike a single solid, pearl or flake color or a multi-color scheme. The options are virtually unlimited, although we are able to offer suggestions and ideas to simplify the process. Our dealers are given a chip book that shows the full color range available and our in house paint department can match just about any hue if needed. All custom decal and paint orders include a PDF (sent via email) that shows exactly what the bike will look like when done. Finishes can be customized on all our models, Z1, Z2, Z3, Z4, CX, TT and TT Custom. We also offer nude (bare) carbon finish with etched logos for the ultimate in stealthy, low maintenance looks on the Z1, Z2 and Z3. TECHNICAL: As the vast majority of our models are built to order, we have the ability to specify and customize a vast range of fittings and interfaces, beyond the geometry, and the finish. This is not common, especially among builders of carbon fiber bicycles. For example, we can build a frame with English bottom bracket threading, the newer BB30 standard or proprietary (very lightweight) integrated bearing options for ZIPP or THM crank sets. We can modify the placement of cable stops, eyelets, pump pegs, bottle mounts, etc. We can build a frame with our standard 31.6mm seat post, an integrated seat post (ISP) design or the more old school 27.2mm sizing. Not every client will want a bicycle customized in any of these ways, but for those who do; we have flexibility in our building and ordering process to accommodate these options seamlessly. COMPONENTS: All nine of our models can be built up with components to your specifications. We offer the full range of Shimano, Campagnolo and SRAM build kits as well componentry from ZIPP, HED, Mavic, EDGE, or virtually any bike parts manufacturer that makes sense to interface with our frames. So if you can dream it, we can build it. WWW.PARLEECYCLES.COM 4

“T he ride is phenomenal. At f irst, it’s so subtle you realize only that it’s exceptionally light and beautifully responsive to pedal inputs ... you can dive into a corner if you want, but you get to the same place by just f licking your wrists and letting the Z4 do the work,” — Bicycling Magazine

Z3 DNA, PERFORMANCE AND RIDE QUALITY IN STOCK PLATFORM The bicycle industry is awash in cookie-cutter sub-1000 gram stock carbon frames. What used to be a rarity is now available in almost any bike shop. Don’t get us wrong, we like light bikes. We were building 850-gram carbon framesets when most manufacturers were still clinging to titanium and aluminum as the “ultimate” road frame material. It is not difficult to build light, stiff carbon frames. However, the challenge is to build light, stiff frames that ride smoothly and can be counted on to last more than a season or two. Designed from day one to be supremely comfortable and fast, the Z4 is our vision of what a stock carbon fiber frameset should be. Light. Smooth. Pretty. Durable. Efficient. Comfortable. Lively. Race ready from the go. The Z4 is based on three years of development and proven geometry, tube diameters and f iber composition/orientation of the Race Bike of the Year-winning Z3. The Z4 is neither pure monocoque nor pure tube-to-tube construction. Instead, we form the front triangle, bottom bracket area and chainstays as monocoque units, then unite these forms to the tubes with wraps of more carbon. We believe this process achieves a perfect balance between light weight, durability, affordability and great road feel. The Z4 fuses the latest in advanced molding technologies with the ride and build quality that all PARLEE frames are known for. So much so that professional Continental team FLY V Australia team rode this bike to over 60 wins in 2009, proving to us and the peloton that we had another winner on our hands.

Z5

sub 800 gram FRAME

EVOLUTION Our next generation frameset — the Z5 — is one of the lightest frames ever built, yet still possesses the famous acceleration, lively road feel, and comfort that is the hallmark of a PARLEE. The Z5 combines the best qualities of the Z1 and Z4 using our latest molding techniques perfected in the TT without sacrificing performance, comfort or durability. After the success of our Z4 we realized we could create a lighter weight stock frame while maintaining the same performance. We achieved our weight savings by: DROPOUTS: We changed from a 2-part forged aluminum to a one-piece carbon f iber dropout. Savings: 20 grams. SEAT STAYS: Changed from the wishbone (as used on Z3 and Z4) to the classic, more labor intensive twin stay (with a co-molded carbon brake bridge) of the Z1. Savings: 25 grams. BOTTOM BRACKET: Changed the interface from traditional threaded to thread less BB30 interface. Savings: 30 grams. (This also allows for the use of the new BB30 compatible cranks, some of which are as much as 200 grams lighter than their traditional predecessors.) LAY-UP SCHEDULE: By carefully examining every square cm of carbon fiber prepreg, we found areas of redundant material that was able to be eliminated. By examining the structure for wasted fiber we are able to have a higher strength at a lower weight, no trade-offs. The benefits include crisper acceleration and better tracking. Savings : 25grams SEAT LUG: By moving to the next generation mold technology and moving to twin stays instead of the wishbone, we were able to eliminate the seat lug. Savings: 20 grams. SEAT CLAMP: Designed and built a carbon clamp that performs as well as its aluminum counterpart. Savings: 7 grams FORK: The reality is that the safety regulations have changed the fork landscape for good such that many forks are no longer available or they are 20% heavier than they were 2 years ago. We found that a gentler taper to the fork, specifically from 1.125" to 1.25" provides all the additional strength needed while improving tracking, handling and weight savings. Savings: 30 grams. All these elements add up to (on average) to 140-160 grams of weight savings in the frame set alone over a Z4. Combined with a modern BB30 compatible crank set and the weight savings can be well over 300 grams. There are no downsides to the weight savings. You still get the same PARLEE durability and ride in our next generation Z5. We didn’t stop at weight savings. We added our industry f irst FLEX-FIT platform to the Z5 expanding our range of stock sizes to 10. 11

TT

THE FIRST AERO BIKE TO RIDE LIKE A ROAD BIKE — SLEEK, FAST AND COMFORTABLE The goal with our TT design was simple. Create the best performing bike for individual efforts against the clock. You might expect that given our background in developing NACA-based low-drag sections, we would be speaking endlessly about the aerodynamic qualities of this design. Well, we could, it is fast in theoretical situations (i.e. by itself in a wind tunnel) but no race is won by a bare frame in a wind tunnel. Maximum performance depends on a unique blend of f it, ride quality, eff iciency and aerodynamics. If an athlete can’t be in the ideal position where comfort and power are maximized and road shock is minimized, then all the aero tricks in the world won’t make you faster. In designing our TT bike, we focused on several key areas. RIDE QUALITY: Cycling Weekly says about our road frames “the road feels smoother when riding the PARLEE”. As important as this is on a road frame, take into account being in a full tuck on an aero bar with a deep section front wheel and disc out back. Comfort does matter. So expect our TT to have the ride quality of our road bikes. FIT: Low drag is great but if you can’t comfortably put out your maximum wattage, there is no point. For the f irst time on a stock geometry bike, you can get each of our sizes with one of two head tube heights. This is important because every athlete has their own individual position where power, comfort and aerodynamics can be maximized along with predictable handling and precise steering. This, along with our unique, multi-position seat post, provides the widest range of fit options. Fit is key. AERODYNAMICS: All of the sections are bike specif ic, optimized NACA-derived, low-speed sections designed exclusively for the typical, variable wind conditions faced by cyclists racing solo against the wind. Equally fast in a 0 degree (head-on) as in varying crosswind conditions. Cable routing and brake mounting are as clean as possible. The cables take the shortest possible path from the controls to the point where they enter the frame. Cables remain out of the airstream as much as possible. The rear brake sits under the chain stays. The top tube is perfectly parallel to the ground. Frontal area is reduced as much as possible, but nothing gimmicky is added that takes away from the handling or set up. USABILITY: Having a design that is easy to build up, easy to adjust and easy to maintain is paramount to us. A reliable, quiet riding bike is a joy to ride. All the cables run through full length guides so contamination is minimized, installation is simple and service can be performed quickly. The seat post features independent adjustment for height, setback (fore-aft) and angular (tilt) and the bike f its in standard travel cases and shipping boxes. WEIGHT: While our focus was elsewhere first, we simply built one of the lightest time trial machines on the market without sacrificiing comfort. EFFICIENCY: A quick glance at any review ever written about a PARLEE will show that we get the balance between stiffness and comfort. Why should an aero bike be any less responsive? A stout drive train delivers exceptional sprints and out of the saddle feel. Expect our TT to respond to pedal input just like our road bikes. 13
