PRIVILEGED

TO SERVE —

Webster’s defines the word “serve” in many different ways, but the definition that I am more endeared to is “to wait on customers; to furnish or supply with something needed or desired; to answer the needs of…”.

The Masons (Rod, Olivia, & Laurie)

Rod Mason, Executive Director

I think you get the picture! At Swiss Village we are all called to serve – to serve you! And I feel privileged to have been called to serve! I am “privileged to serve”, and I believe my service needs to be directed to everyone whose lives are t ou ched by t he ministry of Swiss Village. I am privileged to serve the residents, the Board, the employees, the family members, and the volunteers! Yes, I fully believe that our calling to Berne has

been a Divine calling and that I/we must be attentive to the many aspects of “service” and “serve” as guided by God’s tender direction. I n R o t a r y International, if you are not familiar, there is a “four way test” by which all members are encouraged to charge their duties and responsibilities after screening through the filter of this invaluable “test”. That “four way test” is as follows: 1. I s it the TRUTH? 2. Is it FAIR to all Cont. on page 2

PRIVILEGED… (cont. from Pg. 1) concerned? 3. Will it build GOODWILL and BETTER FRIENDSHIPS? 4. Will it be BENEFICIAL to all concerned? Privileged to serve! Honored to serve through the screening of “the four way test”. Let us all commit to screening every decision we encounter – whether in relating to a peer or colleague, interaction between co-worker, interaction between supervisor and employee, interaction between resident and employee. Screen the decision or action and then deliver it accordingly. I BET we will all enjoy life just a tad bit more!!

SWISS VILLAGE CELEBRATES 37 YEARS OF BABY DAY —

Michelle McIntosh

Swiss Village celebrated the 37th anniversary of Baby Day on Monday, October 13th. Shirley Neuenschwander, and Judy Dye created baby day in 1977 as a day to celebrate children as well as provide intergenerational programming. This year, 8 babies attended baby day. Thirty-three babies attend the very first baby day. During the past thirty-seven years, 1061 babies from the community have attended baby day, 548 girls and 513 boys. A total of twenty one sets of twins and one set of triplets have participated throughout the years. The youngest baby to ever attend baby day was this year with Elijah Kittle at 9 days. In 2010 Twins Charis and Christiana Lehman, seven months marked the 1000 and 1001 baby to attend since the beginning in 1977. Swiss Village had the most babies in attendance in 1984. This year 4 boys and 4 girls from the surrounding community attended this special event. All babies received a special gift made by Swiss Village residents in appreciation of their participation.

THERAPY —

Tara Farlow

If you or someone you love has had to stay in rehab after an illness, returning to the prior living environment can be filled with uncertainty. Here are five things to expect: 1. Expect things to be different: Unrealistic expectations about being able to return to your prior activity level can leave you frustrated. It may take a while to be able to return to your full activity level. Recognizing ahead of time that you may have to ease back in to your regular activities is important. 2. Start planning early: if you think you’ll need to make modifications around the house, please ask your therapists for a home evaluation to make recommendations for your home to be modified. 3. Stay focused on goals: Recovery should continue when you go home. Discuss recommendations for a daily routine and long term goals while at home. 4. Take advantage of resources: The rehab team can guide you as to what you may need once you get home as well as putting you in touch with outside resources. 5. Recognize that it’s ok to have help: It’s important to be realistic about the level of care that will be required and it’s ok to have help while you continue to gain strength. The earlier you start planning, the easier the transition.

RESIDENTIAL ACTIVITIES —

BLUMENGARTEN ACTIVITIES —

Autumn Greetings! We started off our month with a successful garage sale. Organizing and cleaning always feels good. After the hard work, we had a wonderful time of fellowship with the South Adams Senior Center over a few games of pool. We celebrated new life with Swiss Village’s Annual Baby Day. A very special guest, Jamie Kittle Activities Director, was able to visit with us and bring her precious baby boy, Elijah Neil Kittle. He was born Saturday, October 4th at 8:26 AM. He came into the world 20 and ½ inches long, 7 pounds 1 ounce and had a lot of dark brown hair! We were able to “ooh” and “ahh” over 8 new babies in all. A trip to Menchhoffer’s Pumpkin Farm put us in a festive mood complete with s’mores and apple cider. We continued to celebrate the change in seasons with pumpkin decorating and a Kinder Haus Costume Parade! We have already started thinking about the upcoming Holidays with a trip to Darlington Holiday Warehouse and the Muncie Mall. We continue to stay busy making new items for our Holiday Bazaar coming up on Friday, November 14th. However, as busy as we were, we managed to keep our nails polished and enjoy a massage with Megan in the Fun Spot.

The beautiful leaves outside are reminding us of God's creativity. As I sat at chapel last week I was reminded how much we all have to be thankful for. In chapel, the residents were encouraged to request their favorite hymn. These residents have lived through so many difficult situations and yet listening to them sing from their hearts just brought tears to my eyes! Amazing Grace, O Come all Ye Faithful, There's A New Song in My Heart, How Great Thou Art, I will Praise Him, Sunshine in my Soul, Since Jesus Came into My Heart, & Wonderful Grace of Jesus were just a few of what were sung. I heard several say that was one of their favorite chapels and they could have continued singing for a longer time. So put a new song in your heart today and enjoy the beauty of the fall!

HEALTHCARE HAPPENINGS — Karen Rowell

October is Italian month. We had an Italian Luncheon with the children from Kinder Haus. We enjoyed a pasta bake, green beans, and cheese filled bread sticks, with ice cream sundaes for dessert. This month we have learned many new things about pumpkins. Where pumpkins originated from, how big they can get, the many different colors and much more. Several residents had fun painting pumpkins during one of our afternoon activities. While painting the pumpkins, there was much discussion about how we could cut up the pumpkins and use them for pies. Hard to believe Thanksgiving and Christmas are right around the corner and all the pies that will be made.

One of the things that our residents enjoy most is spending time with children, so this month was a special time indeed! On the evening of the 30th we hosted out annual walk-through Fall Carnival for the children and friends of staff members. We had great fun watching the youngsters in their costumes as they enjoyed playing games and collecting treats. The next morning we also invited the children from Kinder Haus to join us for a mini carnival. Our bus ride season came to an end this month, and we were treated to a very interesting bus tour of a big barn at the Max Beer farm. Things sure have changed since the days when many of our residents grew up on the farm!

KINDER HAUS —

Heidi Schoeneman

October was an exciting month for us at Kinder Haus… we were so excited to get a picnic table as well as a bench made from plastic caps. The Adams County Solid Waste Management District went to Evansville to Green Tree Plastics and took the plastic caps that we have been saving and picked up our bench and picnic table. The children have been enjoying the table and the bench on their playgrounds. We appreciate all of you who have saved caps for us and ask that you continue to save them for us. We are in need of 800 pounds to get a youth picnic table for our older kids. This has been a wonderful project and we appreciate all your help!
