ABOUT SWINERTON Founded in 1888, we’ve been building America for over 135 years. Swinerton traces its roots back to 1888, when a young Swedish immigrant formed a brick masonry and contracting business to serve California’s post–Gold Rush building boom. In the years since, the company has survived and thrived through two world wars, the Great Depression and Recession, natural disasters, and dynamic cultural movements.

Today, Swinerton has 20 offices from coast to coast. Backed by the stability of a $5 billion company and a national network of resources, our local teams are committed to the communities they serve. 1929 Great Bakersfield Fire 1889 Due to the fire, Lindgren was able to build his business, leading him to expand into additional markets.

In California, the Los Angeles, Bakersfield, and San Francisco offices are established.

The Lindgren Company is incorporated in San Francisco by brothers Charles and Fred Lindgren.

California begins issuing contractor licenses; Lindgren & Swinerton obtains number 92—out of more than 27,000 issued that year. Charles Lindgren, founder of Swinerton, pays $1 for a one-way train ticket from Chicago to Los Angeles.

VD&C + BIM CAPABILITIES Swinerton’s in-house Virtual Design and Construction (VD&C)/Building Information Modeling (BIM) team implements efficient methods to maximize value in each project. Our detailed models can identify and resolve complex design coordination issues before our teams begin work in the field. We start by understanding the owner’s vision and utilize our expertise to leverage data and reduce guesswork and risk. With our sophisticated technology and early detection of constructability issues, clients benefit from timely issue resolution, financial risk mitigation, and streamlined construction processes.

To manage the VD&C/BIM process effectively, our teams define responsibilities, expectations, and deliverables in a Joint BIM Execution Plan with our design and engineering partners. Swinerton also works with trade partners to develop a contractually binding BIM Execution Plan. This approach creates buy-in from all project stakeholders, allowing teams to collaborate toward similar goals and collectively exceed project expectations.

PRECONSTRUCTION At no other point in the project delivery process is Swinerton’s peace of mind promise more significant than during preconstruction. We believe that the success of any project begins with forging solid relationships between the builder and client well before groundbreaking. As such, we place a critical emphasis on collaboration in our work and treat teamwork as a valuable tool that can enhance project outcomes. Our teams take time to understand what is important to our clients. We facilitate integrated collaboration between ourselves, the designers, and our client to determine the best approach to meet project goals and objectives. Beginning with a baseline estimate, we understand initial project costs through quantitative surveys and historical data. We then engage trusted trade partners with more advanced design drawings to test our assumptions and hone our cost estimates. By tracking trends as the design progresses, we can provide timely estimate updates between stages to reduce surprises.
