SpiNNiNg Jewelry – UniqUe Combination Jewellery with Fashion Flair
Since its launch of the first combination rings in 2003, things have really taken off for Spinning Jewelry. Today, we are proud to be a key player in the international market for designer combination jewellery, but the focus is still the same: the individual woman and her very own personal jewellery.
Spinning Jewelry has become a market leader at a record-breaking pace within the concept of ‘combination jewellery’. As the name suggests, Spinning Jewelry actively involves the end-user in the design process, allowing her to combine and create her very own jewellery to match a specific mood, occasion or outfit.
Unika Design was founded in 1985 by Hans Henrik Nygaard in humble surroundings in a basement in Aarhus. He wanted to create genuine jewellery for all types of fashion-conscious women – jewellery with an edge, personality and a touch of humour, and at a reasonable price, but without compromising on high quality.
At Spinning Jewelry, we underpin the design philosophy of personal jewellery with a full-scale jewellery concept comprising rings, earrings, necklaces and bracelets, all in an exclusive, but reasonably priced, universe of silver, gold, pearls, diamonds and semi-precious stones. The ring concept – which Spinning Jewelry was the first to introduce in the international market for combination jewellery – forms the foundation of the current collection which comprises more than 100 individual designs.

prodUCt inFormation preCioUs metals A precious metal is a rare metal of high economic value. precious metals react differently from most other metals; they have a high lustre, are softer and more ductile and have higher melting points. gold, silver, platinum and palladium are the most common precious metals. silver Fine silver (99.9%) is generally too soft for the production of jewellery; therefore silver is usually alloyed (mixed) with other metals to improve its strength while at the same time preserving the ductility and lustre of the precious metal. Sterling silver 925 is the most widely used silver alloy which contains at least 925/1000 fine silver. gold 24 K gold is very soft and therefore alloyed with another metal to be used for the production of jewellery. This process alters the fineness, hardness, ductility, melting point and colour of the gold. Copper is the most widely used alloy metal and lends jewellery a reddish tone. spinning Jewelry • we produce jewellery in Sterling silver and 8/9/10 K gold. • However, our silver jewellery is often finer than Sterling with a content of up to 95% silver. • our 8 K gold (hallmark 333) is an alloy with at least 333/1000 pure gold. The remaining metal is copper which lends the gold a characteristic reddish tone. • our 9 K gold (hallmark 333) is an alloy with at least 375/1000 pure gold. The remaining metal is copper which lends the gold a characteristic reddish tone. • our 10 K gold (hallmark 333) is an alloy with at least 417/1000 pure gold. The remaining metal is copper which lends the gold a characteristic reddish tone. • Almost all ring bands of our gold rings are hollow and the ring size cannot be altered. gold plating & silver plating gold and silver plating are methods used to deposit a thin layer of gold or silver on a surface of silver or other type of metal. The piece is immersed into a bath of liquid gold or silver to which a current is applied. The ions in the liquid then ”attack” the surface and cover the piece with a thin layer of gold or silver. Time as well as amperage decide the thickness and colour of the plating. rhodiUm plating our diamond series consists of silver rings with 0.25 micron rhodium plating. The rhodium plating is electroplated onto the surface of the silver to make it more reflective and white. A rhodium plated surface also brings out the diamond’s beauty and hardens the silver’s surface. spinning Jewelry • • •
All our silver jewellery is silver plated with fine silver (99.9% silver), and the thickness of the fine silver layer is 1 - 3 microns, depending on the product. our gold plated products are plated with 14 K and the thickness is approx. 1 micron. The gold, silver or rhodium plating will wear off in time, depending on the use and treatment of the jewellery.

prodUCt inFormation tarnish Silver and 8/9/10 K gold react in contact with air, perfumes, soaps, etc. and gets tarnished, which is a natural process. Tarnished silver has a grey or black layer. when used regularly, the jewellery is ”polished” to produce a fine patina. Tarnished jewellery is not to be confused with oxidised jewellery which has been given a dark coating. spinning Jewelry • • •
All our jewellery is given an anti-tarnish coating to prevent rapid tarnishing of the jewellery. Anti-tarnish is a chemical coating. The jewellery is immersed in a bath with the liquid after which a current is applied. Thus the process is the same as in silver/gold plating. The coating will wear off in time, depending on the use and treatment of the jewellery.

The powder and surface are heated to 750-850°C. The powder melts, becomes liquid and hardens to a uniform, durable coating on surfaces such as metal, glass or ceramic. The enamel technique dates back to Antiquity. spinning Jewelry • •
we use cold enamelling for all enamel jewellery. Cold enamelling consists of a chemical powder mixed with a liquid which is then applied to the jewellery with a brush. Heating is applied to harden the enamel. Cold enamelling is more shock-absorbing than ordinary glass enamel and does not crack as easily if the jewellery is dropped.
pearls pearls are produced in live molluscs as a defence against an irritant inside the shell. The mollusc forms a pearl by depositing mother-of-pearl around the irritant. There are two types of pearls: natural pearls and cultured pearls. Natural pearls are created spontaneously in nature without any human intervention. They are rare and therefore very valuable. Cultured pearls are produced artificially with the help of humans who insert shell beads in the mollusc. The beads are then covered by several layers of mother-of-pearl before being removed from the mollusc. Cultured pearls are often produced in freshwater (freshwater pearls) and are available in many colours, shapes and sizes. spinning Jewelry •

prodUCt inFormation stones and gems A precious stone or a semiprecious stone is a piece of attractive, rare mineral which, when cut and polished, is used for jewellery. Diamonds, rubies, sapphires and emerald are always precious stones while other stones with less hardness and lustre are called semiprecious stones. The latter is often cut with few facets or as a smooth cabochon. diamond A diamond consists of densely pressed carbon and was formed at depths of 150 km, millions of years ago. it is the hardest, naturally occurring mineral known to us. The diamond’s ability to scatter white light into its individual component parts (spectral colours) makes it a desirable gem. The stone is said to be ”on fire”. A diamond is graded based on the four C’s: carat, clarity, colour and cut. • Carat is the diamond’s mass (1 carat = 0.20g) • Clarity regards the inclusions of a diamond. The number, size, colour, position, orientation and visibility of the inclusions affect the clarity of the diamond and hence its value. • The colours of ”white” diamonds are graded using letters and names, from D, which is the best and colourless diamond, to K, where the stone is coloured white. • The cut of diamonds is important to bring out the characteristic ”fire” and brilliance for which diamonds are known. A brilliant is a round diamond cut with 58 facets. A full cut diamond is the same as a brilliant. A pure diamond has more ”play” and reflections. Dirt, especially at the bottom, reduces the brilliance of the diamond considerably. spinning Jewelry •

synthetiC stones Today, most stones can be created synthetically in a laboratory. Synthetic stones are not imitations. A synthetic or natural stone has the same characteristics but the synthetic stones often have clearer colours and no inclusions. Cubic zirconia (cz) is a synthetic diamond imitation. The imitation copies the diamond’s appearance and colour but does not have the same chemical or physical properties (often, its hardness is reduced). Cubic zirconia is produced in many different colours. An artificial gemstone is also produced synthetically but it does not look like or imitate a natural gemstone.
