A longtime resident of Owenton, Roger Alford now lives in metro Atlanta. However, he returns to visit family and friends often and continues to write a religion column for The News-Herald. Roger was a pastor in Owen County for over a decade and has served in a number of high-level ministry roles over the years. Currently, he serves at the Georgia Baptist Mission Board, where he operates The Christian Index, the nation's oldest religious newspaper founded in 1822. Roger grew up in the mountains of southeastern Kentucky, where he spent much of his youth hunting and fishing. His father was a coal miner, and his mother a homemaker. Together, they raised nine children. In the early 1970s, his oldest sister, Sonya, moved to Owen County with her husband, David Coppedge,
when he became pastor of Long Ridge Baptist Church, a position he held while attending The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in Louisville. During that time, Roger's sister, Jo, met Frank Pryor, and they were married. Shortly after that, Roger's sister, Sherry, met Eugene Caldwell, and they were married. Then, his brother, Terry, married Cathy Smith. And his sister, Linda, married Bill Prather. With so many family members in Owenton, his sister and brother-in-law Ray and Sheila Baker moved to Owenton, too. Roger began his journalism career working for the New York Times Regional Newspaper Group in the central Appalachian region. He enjoyed a successful 40-year Roger Alford career in journalism, including a long stint with The Associated Press, the world's largest newsgathering operation. Roger also is the founding editor of Kentucky Today, one of the state's foremost online newspapers. After retiring from The Associated Press, Roger accepted a position overseeing communications for the Kentucky Baptist Convention and later for the Southern Baptist Convention's International Mission Board. Roger and his wife, Susan, have three grown children, Emily, a teacher; Josh, a technology consultant; and Mary, a journalist. They also have a 1-year-old granddaughter, Harper J. Alford.
