business and set up a successful engineering workshop in St. Petersburg. They subsequently turned their attention to oil and built up the great network of oilfields in Baku, Azerbaid­zhan. Among other things they built the world’s first oil tanker. Alfred joined the oil company as a partner and financial guaran­ tor; his brother Ludvig was responsible for imports of dynamite to Russia. The collabor­ ation between the brothers was good and fruitful. The Humanist There was another side to Alfred Nobel’s character which should rightly be touched upon here, namely the humanist and the phil­osopher. We know that he had literary interests and ambitions; he read a great deal of fiction and wrote dramas and poetry. Although it might surprise us, his favourite poet was Shelley – this atheist and revolutionary harboured a sensitive poetic soul.
