The Humanist There was another side to Alfred Nobel’s character which should rightly be touched upon here, namely the humanist and the philosopher. We know that he had literary interests and ambitions; he read a great deal of fiction and wrote dramas and poetry. Although it might surprise us, his favourite poet was Shelley – this atheist and revolutionary harboured a sensitive poetic soul.
