In 1896, the year of his death, Nobel’s business empire comprised some 100 factories in 20 countries.

invention, gelignite (blasting gelatine), which not only had a stronger explosive effect than pure nitroglycerine but was also chemically stable and insensitive to impact. The following year, in 1876, he patented his new invention. In the years 1875−77, as his industrial empire continued to expand, Nobel was obliged to reorganize a number of his companies. In France he founded the Société générale pour la fabrication de la dynamite in 1875. The following year his German company Alfred Nobel & Co became the Deutsche Dynamit ActienGesellschaft (DAG). A few years later, Nobel invented a smokeless powder, which he called ballistite but is usually called Nobel gunpowder. It came to replace the black powder which gave off the “gunsmoke” so characteristic of gunfights. By combining nitrocellulose and nitroglycerine Nobel obtained a powder which produced water vapour rather than smoke. A laboratory to develop his new invention was set up in 1881 in 18

Sevran-Livry outside Paris, but it was not until 1887 that he succeeded in obtaining his first patent on the substance, this too in France. Nobel worked on many other projects simul­ taneously. Whether it be synthetic rubber or leather, aluminium boats, aeroplane designs or domestic refrigerators, his creative drive never rested. He himself wrote at one point: “If I have 300 ideas in a year and one of them is useable, then I’m satisfied.” The Leader of Industry The abilities to organize and to maintain a clear perspective, as well as an awareness of the march of time, can be identified as some of the driving features behind Alfred Nobel’s success as a leader of industry.
