You’re about to marry the love of your life in front of a room full of your closest friends and family. Or are you? Turns out, weddings this year will be more about the after-party than the main event.

It might be a knock-on effect from the costof-living crisis (cozzie livs, if you prefer), but engaged couples are prioritising their receptions over their nuptials. Not only does this save a few pounds on the big day, but it gives them a chance to experience a more intimate wedding before going all out on the celebrations.

Some couples are choosing to get married earlier in the day, too, giving themselves a proper rest and some time to spend alone together before they dance the night away.

Take Naomi Biden and her husband, Peter Neal. The US president’s granddaughter got married in her grandfather’s back garden last year with only her closest friends and family present. Granted, that was the back garden of the White House, and she had 250 people present, but by her standards, that was pared down. And the service took place at 11am, giving them plenty of time to enjoy a long ceremony and a long lunch and still have time to relax and take it all in before heading back to the evening reception.
