I love this time of year. A little chill in the air, no more lawns to mow and no snow to shovel – yet. Children dressing up as all sorts of ghosts, goblins and “Guardians of the Universe” characters. And the fall TV season is finally in full swing. Not that anyone asked, but of all the new shows, my favorite is “Scorpion.” It has likable characters and interesting, if not a bit far-fetched, storylines. Then there is “Selfie.” Sadly, despite generally favorable reviews, I was unable to get past the first 10 minutes of the pilot episode, which featured the most obnoxious personality since George Costanza on “Seinfeld.” Why would the writers introduce you to such an arrogant, self-centered person right from the start? Isn’t that why “flashbacks” were created? In the good news/bad news category: We finally have commercials on television for something other than Viagra and Cialis. I would rather watch an infomercial for the Brazil Butt Lift than have to sit through another of those awkward 30 second spots. Now the bad news: Those “you’ll be ready when she is” ads have been replaced by seemingly hours of political commercials. Now, I can see getting the word out about your candidacy but the problem is, without exception, every single advertisement I’ve seen has been negative. It is not, “Vote for me because ...” It is, “Don’t vote for him because he charges $12 for a pickle.” (I swear I did not make that up.) The reasoning is absurd. “My opponent may vote to cut Social Security payments.” Sure, your opponent may vote to cut payments. He may also dance the can-can in a green shirt and a catcher’s mask. (My utmost admiration to anyone who gets that reference.) Next time one of those commercials comes on, Google “taxi jim the psychic 3/3” instead.

WILLMAN laments ‘sad impermanence’ of
‘HALLOWEEN WARS’ displays On Food Network’s “Halloween Wars,” contestants invest hours and lots of physical and emotional energy creating one-of-a-kind holiday displays. So it may come as somewhat of a surprise to viewers that these meticulously crafted creations often meet an ignominious end. “Sadly, I think they do (wind up in the Dumpster),” says host Justin Willman. “Some of the pumpkins they use in the last round are 1,000 pounds, so these displays, they actually use forklifts just to kind of position them around the studio. And once that’s done, they’re really too heavy and too big to fit in anyone’s car, so they’ll kind of hang out at the studio as they pack up and get admired as they drip and rot, and then after that they’re off to the Dumpster. Unlike on ‘Cupcake Wars,’ where you get to take that display off to an event and it gets to be enjoyed and eaten, these by nature are with us only for a short time.” But first, there is the matter of judging them. The season finale, which airs Sunday, Oct. 26, has the theme “Haunted Carnival” and all that suggests, and Willman is surprised how in four seasons the artists keep outdoing themselves. “They always step it up a notch,” he says. “There’s something weird about always being surprised at how creeped out you get by what they can do with a pumpkin and what they can do with cake and blending it all together. “And there’s like a sad impermanence to the fact that they spend six hours building something that you know will crumble and rot away in the next couple of days. Like, they put the same amount of time that someone puts into a sculpture that lasts forever or an oil painting but they’re doing it with food, so it’s by definition temporary. And it’s kind of beautiful and sad at the same time that you know it’s going to be gone. And of course it’s nice that it’s immortalized on television.” What are you currently reading? “I’m currently revisiting some classics. Obviously what I do mainly for a living is I’m a magician/comedian, so I’m kind of revisiting this classic collection of books called ‘The Tarbell Course in Magic,’ which is an eight-volume series that I had as a kid. It’s a set of books published in the ’40s; it’s kind of like this classic reference guide to just our basic magic technique ... .” What did you have for dinner last night? “I ordered Chinese food. My fiancee and I ate some Chinese, like end of the day, superlazy, don’t want to cook, just MSG it up.”
What is your next project? “Right now, I’m shooting a pilot for Comedy Central. It’s my own show. It’s a comedy/magic/ sketch/variety show called ‘Justin Willman’s Sleight of Mouth,’ and we’re shooting that pilot right now.” When was the last vacation you took – where and why? “In July, my then-girlfriend at the time, Jillian, and I went to Barcelona, Madrid, Positano and Rome in Italy. And in Positano I actually proposed. So we kind of went for fun but my ulterior motive the whole time was waiting for this really pretty hike in Italy to propose.”
