When CEO Claire Roach asked the Harvey Men’s Shed group to come up with an idea for a sign for her horse property, Lance Powell applied his skills immediately! Claire’s family originally owned a property outside Albury in NSW called Mungabareena, which in the local Aboriginal language means “place of many talking”. When she recently bought a property just outside Harvey she decided that would be a fitting name. Lance designed the sign and then set to work making it. It is made of Oregon pine with the letters handcarved into it. Both Lance and Claire are seen here obviously very happy with the end result! www.swcommunitycare.org.au

Nola Marino MP joined us as a special guest, to officially open Trudy Smith’s ‘Rillawood’ Exhibition on Sunday 29 April. Having taken up art at the age of 85, some 17 years later, at the age of 102, Trudy still enjoys painting in her own home, every day. Nola expressed her admiration of Trudy and encouraged others to ‘try something new’ at any age. Trudy’s family gathered in Eaton to support her on the special opening day, with some members coming from Perth and others flying in, all the way from Canberra! Trudy enjoyed the day immensely, surrounded by children, grandchildren and greatgrandchildren! Jane Booth of South West Community Care said, “Trudy is one of the most inspirational people we are ever likely to meet. It is a real honour to tell her story and to be part of her life. We are very privileged to work with older members of our local community every day – they all have special talents and experiences to share.” Trudy’s story was covered by ABC Radio presenter, Stan Shaw. Her interview and a short video can be viewed on www.abc.net.au and has been featured nationally, on the ABC program websites, including Landline and ABC News. This prompted a lot more media attention, that Trudy certainly wasn’t expecting! If you have a story that you’d like to share, please call Jane on 9782 4060. www.swcommunitycare.org.au

Held on 12 April at the South West Sports Centre, the Live Lighter Aged Care Games included 16 teams from the local area. The games were played in wonderful sprit and included hockey, passball, beanbag toss and skittles. South West Community Care’s team went into ‘battle’ with great sportsmanship and, although we didn’t pick up a medal, we shared lots of fun and laughter throughout the day!
