Kelsey Dennis– CHSP Team Leader I recently took on the role as new Team Leader for Area 1. I manage the CHSP consumers for the area from Yarloop to Brunswick. I also manage the fabulous Care Workers for this area . I was born and raised in Victoria and began my career in Aged Care at the age of 19 as a cleaner in a residential facility and that’s where my passion for assisting the elderly began. I then went on to study my Dual Certificates in Aged Care and Home and Community Care. In 2014 I decided to follow my partner to Bunbury ,WA after he had landed his dream job. I managed to gain a Care Aide position with another service provider and after five years I decided to return to study to complete my Certificate IV in Aging Support, which has opened up many opportunities .I have learnt a whole new side to the Home Care industry. We married in March 2020. After living in WA for six years we have decided to settle in the area and have built a home in Dardanup, which is just perfect for us and our dog Bonnie- the Kelpie.

Handa Strydom—Occupational Therapist Cape Town, South Africa, was my home for the first 28 years of my life. I grew up in a very sheltered Afrikaans speaking community during the Apartheid era with limited exposure to other cultures and languages. I studied Occupational Therapy at the University of Stellenbosch where I also met my husband. As a student I soon learnt that I enjoyed working with children with disabilities and the elderly. 4

After I graduated, I started to work as a paediatric Occupational Therapist and loved it so much that I continued working in that field for 28 years. My husband and I left South Africa in 1998 to work for two years in England. We were overwhelmed by all the different cultures and I had to learn to speak English rapidly to the amusement of the locals and my work colleagues. It was in the UK where I started to work with the elderly and developed a deep respect for the people who paved the way before me.

We then went to live and work in New Zealand for 7 years where our twin boy and girl were born after IVF treatment. Three years later, another girl arrived unexpectedly as a big surprise! Thirteen years ago, we moved to Bunbury to be closer to South Africa and have never looked back. We now call WA home after we became Australian citizens in January 2020. Eleven years ago, I started to work as an Occupational Therapist at HACC, now SWCC. It was such a privilege to see the organisation grow and develop. SWCC is an organisation to be proud of. I find my work very stimulating and value the acceptance, joy and love I receive from the consumers. I complete at least three home visits every week and never forget what a privilege it is to enter a person’s private sanctuary and safe place.

As “Caring is our Business” I will finish with this extract by Cheryl Richardson: “When we care for ourselves deeply and deliberately, we naturally begin to care for others – our families, our friends, and the world – in a healthier and more effective way. We become conscious and conscientious people. We tell the truth. We make choices from a place of love and compassion instead of guilt and obligation. And we begin to understand – on a visceral level – that we are all connected, and that our individual actions affect the greater whole in a more profound way than we ever imagined.” www.swcommunitycare.org.au

Peggy is ‘ dynamite in a small package’ for sure. Peggy is energetic , constantly active and always smiling and laughing. The Second World War times taught them all to appreciate the scarcity of everything and to treasure what they had.

At 16, Peggy moved to Perth and began working at Gibson’s Confectionery, run by four brothers and ultimately married the youngest brother, Wally. Peggy’s diary is filled with activities with delightful groups of friends, including card game groups , weekly Tai Chi classes, visiting friends and enjoying her embroidery work, puzzles and code crackers! Peggy was very involved in the local Variety Group for years, playing numerous roles in musicals, comedies and dramas. Much fun was had on stage and backstage and long lasting friendships formed during this time. “ SWCC are fantastic and I am blessed that such a caring organisation exists. They help me in so many ways and graciously allow me my independence and the dignity to make my own choices . I have never driven a car , but have SWCC volunteers or care workers to transport me whenever I need this service, and I have some assistance in my home too. I love life and look for the joy in all things and do not stress about things I cannot change “

Men’s Shed Harvey Men’s Shed was back on the road at last, in July for a very enjoyable day out. The day started with a cuppa and nibbles at the shed and then we all piled into the bus and headed to the Feature Wood Gallery and Museum at Treendale. There followed a very interesting hour long tour in which the history and significance of the exhibits was explained by the curator. It was evident that the guys were keen to learn about the different items on display as they were very attentive and asked many questions with no one nodding off —which is unusual. One point of amusement was the uncanny likeness of two of the mannequins to members of our shed. After thanking our host ,John , it was all aboard again to head into Bunbury for an enjoyable lunch at the Dim Sim Chinese Restaurant ,always a good meal and popular with all the guys. From the conversations on the way home it was clear that the cobwebs had been blown away and that we had all had a lovely enjoyable day. Next outing will be ten pin bowling followed by fish and chips at Aristos Seafood Restaurant. A final point on the ten pin, it can be played by all, not just the young ones!

The media news, looks promising Though really no time, to dance or sing For as yet we have not, won the prize Only idiots, think otherwise

For decreased infections, there might be But let us be wise, and wait to see That, the curve is on, a downward trend And is not about, to upwards bend Much, depends on the decisions made Before we can throw, a big parade The in bound travelers, coming back May push recovery, off the track So let’s not celebrate, way too soon For it just may be, a waning moon So let us not get, our hopes too high On media reports, don't rely

We have done the best, as a nation In keeping safe, our population But it is not time, to now digress We're not yet out, of the wilderness Surely it is not, that hard to see Complacency, is our enemy Sadly therefore, we must carry on Until the threat, is completely gone Š Les Stevens Apr 2020
