Riddles 1.

I have lakes with no water, mountains with no stone and cities with no buildings. What am I?

2.

With pointed fangs I sit and wait; with piercing force I crunch out fate; grabbing victims, proclaiming might; physically joining with a single bite. What am I?

3.

What can fill a room but takes up no space?

Business Systems Belinda Burton – Business Systems Manager “I am proud and privileged to be working with the Executive Management Team at South West Community Care, as the Business Systems Manager. It is an honour and it brings me great joy to work for an award winning organisation and to work with the many talented, caring and ever expanding members that enable us to provide such an essential service and care to the aged in our community. I have worked in various roles at SWCC for the past 3 years, which has humbled me and taught me a greater understanding of the industry and the people and families whom we support. As a service coordinator my passion for systems and troubleshooting grew and my constant desire to improve process and systems lead me to my path of Business Systems. I have been so fortunate to have found a role that fuels my desire to learn and expand my technical knowledge combined with the reward of giving back to the community. It is a very complex role comprising of keeping systems operating and updated; keeping the organisation connected; reporting to Government; analysing data and reports and Managing a team of hard working, dedicated and very clever schedulers and support staff to provide the tools to schedule the care workers that you see in your homes. When I am not working on excel spreadsheets and formulae I love to spend time with my family. I live in Australind with my wonderful husband and we are blessed with three beautiful daughters. We love camping, beaching and outdoors and take every opportunity we can to get away in our caravan.

Leanne Brooks—Business Systems Support “I grew up in Bunbury and have lived here for over 30 years. My husband and I love the South West Region that’s why we chose the Bunbury area, as the perfect place to raise our three children. I love spending time outdoors with my family going camping, kayaking, snorkelling and bush walking. I have been working for South West Community Care for over six months now and am currently working in the role of Business System Support. I love helping others by responding to IT issues, collating data, statistical reporting and assisting our Business Systems Manager, this makes my supporting role both enjoyable and fulfilling. I feel privileged to provide system support to a great team and couldn’t be happier contributing to such an amazing organisation, who values its staff and is dedicated to supporting our local consumers in such a professional and caring way.“

Samantha Foxon—Compliance Officer “I joined South West Community Care in February this year. I’m very new to the Aged Care Sector as, for the past 15 years, I’ve been working in various quality and project roles in the resources sector. I feel so grateful for my opportunity in working with SWCC, as I’m now a part of a company that is truly customer focussed and genuinely cares about their staff and its consumers. As the Compliance Officer, I am responsible for ensuring our documents comply with our Policies and the eight Aged Care Government Quality Standards. I’m also responsible for our Continuous Improvement System which aims at identifying improvements to our processes, systems, activities and equipment. I think it’s fantastic that our Consumers are able to be a part of that system too by providing us valuable feedback on our Consumer Feedback Form. When I’m not working, I’m caring for my two children. We enjoy gardening and going for bush walks with our Red Cloud Kelpie named Brodey.” www.swcommunitycare.org.au

Connected Cyber Safety

Don't be pressured into making a decision. Scammers often try to create a sense of urgency through short deadlines, fake emergencies or threats of legal action.

Don’t respond to phone calls or emails offering financial advice or opportunities – just hang up or delete the email.

Don’t provide any sensitive or personal information online if you don’t trust the site or to someone who calls you on your phone.

Be aware of and understand your consumer rights.

Be aware that scammers may send requests for money on behalf of a friend or ask for your bank details– do not send money or share these details.

Les Stevens

Your Story

Our resident poet You may well recognise this name as one featured in the Heart and the Grapevine on a regular basis. We have all come to look forward to and enjoy the poems that Les seems to turn out so effortlessly and which cover such a diverse range of topics. “Born in Perth W.A. in April 1941, I spent my early years in outdoor pursuits, along the banks of the Swan River at Victoria Park. The family then moved to South Guildford and subsequently to Belmont. Where the river again became part of my younger life. I joined the Boy Scouts and developed a lasting interest in nature and the great outdoors. I met my future wife Dien, at a combined Scout and Guide Guy Faux Night Bonfire in Maida Vale. Dien and I have one son, and two daughters, five grandchildren, and three great grandchildren. In 2021 we will be celebrating our 60th Wedding Anniversary. I was employed by the PMG's Dept. which ultimately became Telstra Australia. Starting as a Technician in Training in 1957, and then after forty years’ service, retiring as a Principal Technical Officer. After I retired from Telstra, in 1997, we bought a property in Northcliffe, in the states south west, where we spent the next ten years and where I became involved in several community affairs, including a group which produced a monthly newsletter, “The Karri Pigeon”, and had some of my poetry published in this publication. Since coming to live in Eaton, we became clients of HACC, which we all now know as SWCC, and have enjoyed immensely, the opportunity of getting out and enjoying what the surrounding districts have to offer, with Jamie Lee and her band of Drivers and Volunteers. It is through Jamie Lee that my poetry first came to appear in “The Grapevine” which has recently become “The Heart” You will generally find my poems on the rear cover. 16

Harvey - 9782 4000

I seem to have an ability to write on any subject, from nature, to life's

personal tribulations. My versatility seems to know no bounds and I can generally rise to the occasion, on a particular request. I have written a considerable number of poems, and have been published in many different publications, both here in West Australia and also in America. In 2017 I published a book of my poetry, which I called “Rhyme For All Reasons”. It contains over 120 of my poems divided up, into eight various categories, to cover all tastes. I have been told by some readers, that it gives the impression of being a snapshot of my life. Some of my books have gone overseas to England, Holland and America, among other places. I currently write upwards of about 50 poems each year.” The corona virus and all the situations around the world have given Les endless ideas and inspiration and no doubt he will compile a new book dedicated to the new chaos in our world.

Men’s Shed Harvey

Bevan House Bevan was born in Bunbury on 27 May 1940– he has reached the 80 milestone this year! He lived in Busselton with his grandparents, who owned and operated a local shop and markets. During the war years, Bevan drove up to Perth with his grandfather to deliver produce and often gave soldiers lifts back home. At the age of 17, Bevan started work as a farmhand in Dumbleyung and eventually worked in bulk handling of wheat products. Bevan went into mining and worked throughout Western Australia in a fly-in-fly-out capacity. He married and had five children ,then separated from his first wife at a later stage. Bevan met and married, Phyllis who was originally from Melbourne, and they have been married for 34 years. During their time together they have lived in Eneabba and Geraldton before moving to Harvey about seven years ago. 18

Eaton - 9782 4060

Australind - 9782 4050

Harvey - 9782 4000

Bevan is a keen West Coast Eagles supporter, is an elder in the Seventh Day Adventist Church and works at the pedestrian crossing for Harvey Senior High School most afternoons. Bevan has grandchildren and great grand children -” I have lost count!”- some of whom are still in WA. “Grumpy old Popsicle” is the title he says he has earned over the years and the term his granddaughter uses fondly. The Men’s Shed is a place where Bevan can enjoy some casual social time with mates. He has created some art pieces with wood burning and pottered around, but generally enjoys sitting back, relaxing and having a good chat and laugh with his fellow shedders.

Wall of Fame The gentleman at the Men’s Shed have started to create a “Wall of Fame” in their clubhouse. As each person is featured in The Heart, a poster is developed. Bob Hall builds a frame and then these are displayed in the section that has been created by Allan Foord for this purpose. A great conversation starter and starting to look quite grand!
