SWCC COVID Road to Recovery! Western Australia has been in stage 3 of pandemic recovery now for some weeks. South West Community Care restarted social groups on the 9th of June, followed by social outings shortly after. The Activities Organisers were excited to be back, however; their excitement was surpassed by the level of excitement in consumers attending the groups! It was so wonderful to see people back in the social centres - sharing experiences, getting together and reconnecting with friends. Almost all of our in-home services have returned to “pre-COVID” levels too. Many of our consumers are continuing to enjoy our “Essential Services” (companionship in the home, meal delivery, shopping delivery and regular phone calls to check you are OK) that we rolled out in April. Please contact your local Team Leader if you would like any of these services in future. I would also like to give you an assurance that these services will continue indefinitely. I would like to extend my thanks to all consumers who remained calm and stoic in the pandemic crisis. You were, and still are, great role models for the rest of the community. You know how to behave when things get tough! Finally, I encourage you to be vaccinated for influenza this year. It won’t protect you against COVID, but it will help you stay healthier and maintain your resistance to infections. Don’t forget – it’s free! Stay happy and healthy Claire Roach Chief Executive Officer

Leige Foster I was born in 1949 and lived on the family dairy farm in Serpentine. However, times were tough and we moved after a couple of years to Perth where I grew up. After leaving school I obtained a position with a shipping agency in Fremantle. In between some overseas travel I continued in the shipping industry until 1987. After returning to Perth from Dampier in 1977, I commenced work with the P and O agency where I met my future wife Chris. We married in England in 1981 (I’m a fast mover), we had our first and only child, Joseph in 1985. We moved to the Harvey region in 2006 and after retiring I had a call from HACC wanting to know if could I clean their cars. I said yes even though I couldn’t clean my own car. Eventually this led to being the activity organiser in The Men’s Shed where I am today in the most satisfying job I have ever had. As most will know Chris passed away not long ago and I experienced firsthand the love and compassion from my beautiful work colleagues, something I know our consumers get to experience every week.

Julian Manning I have worked for the SWCC at the Men’s Shed for the past six months. I originally come from Trigg, Western Australia. I have had a varied career and travelled Australia and Asia whenever I could. I have a Diploma of Education with an English and Art major; I also have an Honours Bachelor of Art with a jewellery major. I have been involved in the arts since early 1980 and have an extensive background in and knowledge of the arts. I have taught Art and English in Australia and Singapore, where I lived with my wife and three children for five years. I worked at the Laminex manufacturing plant in Dardanup for three years operating industrial saws, sanders and driving forklifts. Sadly a workplace injury led to me leaving Laminex and going back to relief teaching. When the job with The Men’s Shed became available, I jumped at the chance to put my skills and knowledge to use. I look forward to working with and learning from the men of the Men’s Shed. On my days off I make jewellery, surf and work on my Subaru cars.

Men’s Shed Harvey For the last few weeks of May, Men’s Shed operated on a limited basis, whilst taking into account the Covid-19 restrictions and adhering to strict distancing and hygiene rules in accordance with the government’s guidelines. Whilst this placed limitations on what could be done, the boys returned
keen and eager to get stuck into their various projects that had been placed on hold during the shutdown. This necessitated breaking the men into two groups based on interests ,so that like minded members were in on the same day. We had small groups, carefully observing the social distancing and cleaning regulations able to work on their ongoing projects. Now that WA has moved further into recovery phase our members have been able to return to regular days with all members included. This has allowed members to catch up with friends that they have not seen for a while during restrictions. To celebrate the full return of the Men’s Shed, a BBQ was arranged which allowed the men to sit around at lunch time and do some catching up. The weather was brilliant so we could sit outside and enjoy the food, all cooked to a treat by our regular chef, Wally!
All in all it was a great way to kick off the return to near normal and blow away all the virus and isolation cobwebs! Welcome back, Men’s Shed. There are projects a plenty awaiting your skills and expertise. If you would like to join this band of merry men, give us a call and we will get your team leader or care manager to contact you to discuss the process.
