Message from the CEO - COVID-19 Update What a difficult time this has been for you, our consumers. I want to assure you that we are doing our very best to support and protect you. The Department of Health has advised: “It is critical that all providers actively promote the importance of infection prevention to staff, consumers and visitors. This includes good hand hygiene, cough etiquette, cleaning/ disinfecting and maintaining social distancing.” Consequently, I have advised all SWCC employees to continue to wear gloves and other personal protective equipment that we supply. I have also reminded them that we are charged with the responsibility of caring for our community’s most vulnerable - you. Although Western Australia is yet to move to Phase 5, we have to thank our lucky stars that our state remains in phase 4. Our state government has done a remarkable job of consistently making the right decisions to keep us all safe. Let’s hope it stays that way! The current situation in Victoria has provided us all with a reminder that we have to be ready to respond to a COVID-19 outbreak which could occur at any time. It only takes one unthinking act and the infection spreads like wildfire. So, I am asking you to continue to be vigilant – practice social distancing, hand hygiene, cough etiquette and please make sure you have been vaccinated against the flu – for your sake and for others. Best of health and best wishes, Claire. www.swcommunitycare.org.au

Operations Vicki Rake– Operations Manager “ I joined South West Community Care in January as Executive Secretary to our CEO Claire Roach and was fortunate enough to be offered the role of Operations Manager in April. Operations is the largest employer of staff in SWCC and delivers all our services to consumers – our core business! The role came with huge responsibility and has been trying at times, but that has only added to the excitement, enjoyment and challenge of the role. I am grateful to my team members who are working hard to accommodate various changes and implement new ideas. They have been very welcoming of me and keen to improve the efficiency of our service delivery so more consumers are able to stay in their own homes for longer. I wish to thank Claire and the management team for their unwavering support, assistance and time in getting me up to speed. They have all been vital and valuable resources for me. I have tested their patience on various occasions but they have all hidden it well! Thanks girls! A Secondary School English teacher by profession I am also a qualified Austswim swimming instructor and spent many fabulous years doing both. For the last 12 years I was PA to a Federal Member of Parliament which involved over four months a year in Canberra – a job I loved! I have three fantastic grown-up children and three grown-up step children as well!
After recently marrying I am happy to be home in Harvey and spending time doing the things I really enjoy – fishing, hugging my five grandchildren, growing vegetables, travelling, playing music loud and keeping in touch with our family and friends. I love coming to work and being part of an enviable team environment!”

Kate Hynes– Operations Support “I joined the SWCC team in February so much of my time here so far has been spent operating under the COVID pandemic restrictions. What an interesting time it has been for all of us! With a background in nursing and pharmacy, my most recent roles have been in Business Development and Management. This gave me a good opportunity to practice my skills of consumer service, team work and people management. My career in the healthcare industry has shown me that the consumer is the focus and I believe that achieving the best outcome for our consumers takes a holistic and empathic approach. My role with SWCC is mainly as Operations Support, working alongside Operations Manager, Vicki Rake, and the rest of the Operations team. I am based at Eaton but spend some time in Harvey as well, in the Executive Support role to CEO, Claire Roach.”

Your Story
or Tassie as he is known as in Harvey , has led an interesting and busy life and is always on the go! The fourth of six children born to Dutch parents ,Tassie was born in Harvey and lived on a small farm where as a young child he helped his parents with chores like drawing water from a well with a bucket, tending to pigs, horses, cattle and chooks.
From a young age, Tassie was passionate about animals and had bantams and chicken as pets. He also worked incredibly hard on the farm while at school and then had all of one day’s holiday after graduating before he started a full time job in a wholesale packing store. Tassie worked long hours and then attended evening classes to finally qualify as a teacher. In between this, he found time for 133 blood donations! After ten years of teaching, Tassie travelled extensively during his long service leave. He finally retired from teaching in 2002 and settled back on his farm in Harvey. Sadly his beautiful home was torched by arsonists and Tassie lost all of his belongings, including all of his inherited goods, trophies and a rare book collection. He has since rebuilt his home. Tassie is a keen hobby farmer . His passion for chickens and his ability as a geneticist has resulted in his breeding of a large number of purebred poultry and prize fancy pigeons over the years. Many hours of hard work and numerous experiments were put in place by him to get the correct combinations for the beautiful breeds he has been able to produce. He has also bred rare coloured alpacas. 16

Tassie was elected president and is now a life member of WA’s Fancy and Utility Pigeon Club; an honorary member of Pigeon Breeders and Exhibitors Association and life member of the Rare Poultry Breeders Association. Tassie exhibits his poultry, and pigeons at the Royal Perth Agricultural Show annually. Tassie is a fully qualified Poultry judge and has been invited to judge exhibitions from Esperance up to Moora, as well as many local exhibitions. Tassie continues to work on his farm with his chooks and animals and welcomes anyone to give him a call and pop in for a cuppa!

Men’s Shed Harvey Long time Men's Shed member, Michael Kenny kept himself and his carer, Rob , busy during the Covid-19 shutdown creating a magnificent clock from a wood burl. Michael has now donated the clock to the Men's Shed as a way of saying thank you to his mates at the shed for their companionship, mateship and friendship over the years that they have all been attending Men's Shed. The clock now hangs above the "wall of fame" for all to admire. Well done, a great addition to The Men’s Shed!
