South West Community Care is pleased to advise that we offer Respite in our beautiful rural setting at our Korijekup House Facility in Harvey. We offer group respite on weekends and one-to-one respite during the week. For more information please call one of our friendly Consumer Liaison Team members today on 97824000. www.swcommunitycare.org.au

Schedulers—Consumer Liaison Team We have a dynamic team of four schedulers. We work closely with all of our consumers within our designated area and work alongside the Consumer Liaison Teams. At each location we have a dedicated and friendly service team that comprises of 1 Scheduler, 1 Care Manager for Home Care Packages, 1 Team Leader for CHSP services and 1 scheduler who organises all home maintenance services. The scheduler is responsible for scheduling services which is the balance between identifying available care workers and matching requested days and service times. In this way we can offer services that will be consistent, efficient and compatible with the availability, suitability and sometimes very busy lifestyles of our consumers. As schedulers, we interact with all involved in the services we deliver. We communicate daily and regularly with our consumers, the care workers and the team liaisons for each area. Some days it is like we are working in air traffic control, moving and rescheduling so that everyone receives the service as promised. No one in our scheduling team believes their day will be the same as yesterday as there is always something that needs scheduling. This is what our computer screens may look like! Kathryn Smith “I grew up in Alice Springs, Northern Territory. After high school I moved to WA and am currently living in Australind. During my 7 years in WA I met my husband. We married in February this year. We have built a home together and love living in WA.

I started working at South West Community Care two years ago and over this time I have learnt so much about the ever growing industry of aged care. I work in the Harvey office and schedule services for consumers who live in Harvey and surrounding towns, including Binningup and Brunswick. I truly love being part this amazing company and it brings me great joy to know I’m part of helping our consumers stay active in the community and maintaining their independence in their own homes.” Jane Freeman Jane is based in Eaton. “I moved to the Bunbury area 10 years ago from Perth and began my role with SWCC in February 2019.

Prior to my move I worked as Operations Manager in a customer service industry for 16 years and since moving to Bunbury have worked in administration roles predominately in the trades industry. I enjoy a challenge and the role of scheduling services is like working on a huge jigsaw. Moving and fitting in services to run smoothly for our consumers and our care workers. When all the pieces fit , it’s a good day for everyone !” www.swcommunitycare.org.au

Tralee Tarpey “I grew up in Dunedin, New Zealand and moved to Bunbury in 2011 where I live with my partner and two cats. Since moving, I worked as a travel agent for 7 years and was very fortunate to visit different places around the world. I have a passion for mental health and holistic wellness, and a few years ago I began facilitating wellness events in Bunbury, mainly for groups of women. I began my role as a SWCC Scheduler in April 2019 at the Australind office. I thoroughly enjoy working out the logistics of schedules, and ‘matching up’ all aspects of service delivery to ensure our consumers are safe and happy in their homes. I am proud to be a part of a fantastic company that is of service to the community and I am excited for the future with SWCC!” Tracey Mellegers Tracey is based in the Eaton Office. “I have two young children who keep me busy outside of work. When time permits I love to sew quilts, spend time with my fur child ‘Shadow’ and I am currently learning to play the piano. I have been working with SWCC for just over a year. This is my first time working within the aged care industry. I enjoy the interaction with everyone and love how much support we can offer our consumers. It is my task to schedule all the home maintenance services. I work with the team leader, Rob Gunson and the maintenance team members who work hard to ensure gardens are tidy and safe.” 6

Your Health

What is Hand Hygiene? Hand Hygiene is one of the most important things we can do to prevent the spread of infection. Hand Hygiene includes 

Applying an alcohol-based hand rub to the surface of hands (including liquids, gels and foams) OR  Washing hands with the use of a water and soap or a soap solution, either non-antimicrobial or antimicrobial. When performed correctly, hand hygiene results in a reduction of germs on hands.

When you should wash your hands      

after going to the toilet or changing a nappy before and after handling food after sneezing, coughing, blowing nose after caring for someone who is sick after handling rubbish after smoking.

In addition, any cuts and abrasions on the hands or fingers should be covered with a water-resistant dressing which should be changed as necessary or when the dressing becomes soiled. Soap (preferably liquid) should be used to wash hands. 

if bar soap is used, ensure it is kept in a container that allows drainage

if reusable containers are used for liquid soap, they should be cleaned and dried before refilling with fresh liquid soap

the type of soap does not matter provided it is well tolerated by the user

Alcohol-based hand sanitisers Washing hands with soap and water is the best way to reduce the number of germs on hands and should always be encouraged over the use of alcohol-based hand sanitisers in all homes. Since Men’s Shed (MS) returned from our Christmas break, the boys have been busy in the workshop and have also been getting out and about. Our first outing for the year was to Bunbury Ten Pin Bowling, followed by lunch at Happy Dim Sum restaurant in Bunbury. Outings take place about every five weeks and each day out is based on what the majority of the men want to do. Harvey MS is a little gem of a place, we are all about enjoyment and we would like to see more SWCC consumers join us to participate in fun activities and perhaps blow those cobwebs away. The emphasis is on fun and enjoyment and we encourage all consumers to participate in some activity. If you just want to have a cuppa and a talk you will always find someone in the clubhouse feeling like that’s all they want to do. If you want to get involved, some of the activities you can do are: woodwork (we have numerous tools for just about any project) lapidary, wood turning ,computers and the best model train set which is there for all to add their touch if so desired. MS runs every Tuesday (holidays excepted) from about 0845 to 1430 but some come in later and some go home earlier. It’s entirely your choice. If you think MS could be good for you, give our admin a call on 9782 4000 and speak to our receptionist who will advise you on how to join us.

Thai Pumpkin Soup

Recipe

4 - 6 servings

40ml oil (sunflower or light olive oil) 300g brown onion (roughly chopped) 200g carrot (roughly chopped) 1 stick

Thank you to Lou, our chef from Thyme and Place

celery (roughly chopped)

1kg butternut pumpkin (cut into 2cm dice – you can leave the skin on if you prefer or peel)

15ml red Thai paste (leave out for straight pumpkin soup) 10ml honey 2.5ml garlic (minced or crushed) 2.5ml root ginger (minced or finely chopped) 700ml vegetable/chicken stock 300ml

coconut milk

Coriander leaves (garnish) Spring onion (garnish) Heat oil in a large saucepan and fry the onion, celery and carrot on a medium heat until the onion starts to soften, about 5 minutes. Add the pumpkin and cook for a further 5 minutes. Add garlic and ginger and cook for 1 minute, stirring so it doesn’t stick to the bottom of the pan then add the Thai paste stirring to coat the vegetables. Add the stock and honey. Stir to mix thoroughly. Bring to the boil. Reduce to low heat and simmer for about 20 mins or until the vegetables are soft. Remove from heat and leave for 5 minutes. Once cooled slightly, blitz/ blend until smooth with a stick blender or in a food processor. Return to medium heat, gradually stir in coconut milk until required consistency reached. Adjust seasoning and stir occasionally for 5 minutes or until heated through. Garnish with coriander leaves and chopped spring onions. Serve! www.swcommunitycare.org.au
