HESTA Aged Care Awards The national HESTA Aged Care Awards were held in Adelaide on the 14th of November and our CEO Claire Roach was named one of five finalists in the individual distinction category. As the only finalist from Western Australia, Claire was delighted with this achievement. “We try to give people really good quality of life right up until the very end so

they have choice and maintain their dignity.” HESTA CEO Debby Blakey said “This year’s finalists have pushed the boundaries and developed innovative services and programs that rise to the challenge of providing high-quality care to the growing number of ageing Australians. HESTA is proud to shine a spotlight on the amazing work being done by these teams, organisations, and individuals who have shown incredible commitment to improving the quality of life of older Australians in their homes,

retirement villages and aged care facilities.” Claire was recognised for leading the expansion of SWCC over the past 14 years. In 2006 there were about 50 consumers and that number has now grown to up to 1000 in the South west region. Although Claire did not win the national Individual Distinction award, she was thrilled to be attending the awards. “Aged Care is a growing area and it is absolutely critical that quality care and services are provided. I am passionate about this industry and know that everyone that works here, is too. Our commitment to providing the best possible care to our consumers is vital in this industry” she said. Home Care Packages —Consumer Liaison Team The Consumer Liaison Team work with the consumers to identify their needs and are then able to best fit all services required, within the individual budgets allocated. Each case is assessed independently and the HCP Consumer Liaison Team are constantly in contact to review ongoing needs and any changes that may need to be implemented to care services. The Consumer Liaison Team also consult with schedulers and the care workers who are delivering the services, to ensure that the consumers receive the optimum services we are able to provide. Kayelene, Michelle and Nicky are there to guide, respond to any queries and clarify any information when necessary , throughout the process.

Kayelene Faber Kayelene is based in Eaton. Kayelene has always been involved in the aged care industry. As a teenager, she realized she was able to form special connections with the elderly and is still most passionate about her role. Kayelene has been in her role since 2012, her title has changed over time as the company has grown and developed, and all along Kayelene has loved her work. “I so enjoy the contact with people and knowing we can have such a positive impact on their lives!

Nicky Dobrich Nicky is based in Australind. Nicky has worked in the aged care industry in the Busselton/Dunsborough area with a company based in Perth and recently joined the SWCC team. “I love that SWCC is so community focused. Hot weather safety tips for Seniors Heat can significantly increase older people's risk of becoming unwell and impact the effectiveness of some medications. It can be difficult to realise when we're becoming overheated so it's important to be aware of the warning signs. Don't ignore them once they start, as deterioration can be rapid.

Here are some tips for staying cool: •

Pay attention to weather reports and prevent the heat getting in: Temperatures above 37°C are particularly dangerous. Act early to prevent heat stress on days when the temperature is predicted to rise above 30°C by closing windows and blinds once the outside air is warmer than indoors. • Avoid exposure: Stay out of the sun if possible. If not, wear a shirt, hat, sunglasses and sunscreen. Sunburn will affect your body's ability to cope with the heat. • Cool off: Take a cool shower or tepid bath if you're feeling hot and flustered, soak your feet in cold water, and keep a spray bottle full of water handy to regularly mist yourself. • Dress comfortably: Loose, light-weight clothing helps your body stay cool. Light-coloured clothing reflects heat and sunlight. • Drink water, lots of it: By the time you feel thirsty your body is already dehydrating, so keep drinking fluids even if you don't feel thirsty. Avoid alcohol. • Seek air conditioning: If you don't have air conditioning at home, spend the day somewhere that does, like a library, cinema or shopping centre. If you do have an air conditioner at home, make sure it has been serviced. Fans will also help you stay cool, but only if they're blowing directly on you. • Lay off the hot drinks and caffeine in particular: Try iced tea or an ice dessert instead Take note of the colour of your urine: brown or dark yellow urine suggests dehydration. If you're suffering heat stress, call for help! Don't wait until it's too late. Symptoms of heat stress include extremely heavy sweating, headache and vomiting, confusion, very dry skin and swollen tongue. 8

Men’s Shed Harvey

Wally and Bill , looking very pleased with themselves.

Bill is the champ! Recently the Harvey Men’s Shed held their annual lawn bowls competition. The day commenced with members gathering at the clubhouse for tea and cakes and then off down the road to the bowling club. The bowling was hilarious at times with one bowler attempting to win the end after erring with the bias and claiming shot on the next green. Umpires Lance and Eric kept all under control and ensured we had a great day. After a tight battle all day, Bill James defended his championship title winning by one shot . Daniel Hall came second. At the conclusion of the bowls a peaceful hour or so was spent under the trees having a lunch of hot chicken and chips followed by a cold ice cream and drinks.

The day was marred only by the fact that someone had to come last. But we won’t mention who, will we ,Wal?
