Did you know that your brain is made up of around 73% water? When people become dehydrated, their brain tissue shrinks, a bit like a sponge left in the sun to dry. Unfortunately, if we don’t keep up with our water intake, especially in hot weather, our thinking, memory and cognition can suffer. If you plan to use your noggin at all this summer, keeping it well-lubricated is a must! Signs that you may be dehydrated include loss of appetite, dry mouth, mild constipation, temporary lightheadedness and darker urine (urine should be a light straw colour).
1
Always check with your doctor if you’re unsure about the amount of water you should drink—some people are on a restricted fluid diet. If in doubt, check first.
2
If you are thirsty, always drink water rather than sugary drinks or alcohol.
3
Drink before you eat - sometimes, our brains confuse thirst with hunger. Having a glass of water before eating is a good check.
4
Make a water schedule - perhaps make a special point to have a glass of water with meals and between meals during the day.
5
Eat water-filled foods like cucumbers, tomatoes, watermelon, oranges, broccoli and strawberries. www.swcommunitycare.org.au

Protein
Power
The importance of dietary protein cannot be underestimated in the diets of older adults; inadequate protein intake contributes to a decrease in reserve capacity, increased skin fragility, decreased immune function, poorer healing, and longer recuperation from illness. There are three key benefits to your health when your diet includes protein every day:
Protein is essential for health muscle mass, which can lower
Protein assists the health of your bones, which can lower
the risk of falls the risk of fractures
Protein is important for cell renewal,
which can assist
in faster healing
If you’re not getting enough protein in your diet, why not try Roz’s Breakfast Wraps on page 5? Try making a batch at a time and freezing some for a quick protein boost. Just defrost each wrap for 2 minutes in a microwave then toast in a sandwich press!
