Built some time in the 1930s, perhaps to house the pleasure boat of some affluent local, it’s changed hands numerous times, as well as undergoing various repairs and renovations over the decades after storms and floods. Today, the boatshed sits prominently on the Swan River, a nostalgic reminder of the river’s past. Photo: Geoff Hosking 2

IMPORTANT NOTICE The COVID-19 pandemic is spreading throughout Australia and South West Community Care is responding to changes as they occur. At this stage, the risk of infection is considered to be moderate and the services we deliver to you in your home will remain the same. We will let you know if these services are to change or be reduced in the future. Unfortunately we have had to cancel our social centre groups and outings, based on the Government’s advice to limit the number of people gathering together. We will re-instate the groups when we are given the direction from the Government. We have attempted to contact every single one of our consumers as we need to know how you are and whether there are specific things we can do to assist you. If you haven't been contacted within the last two weeks— please phone your local SWCC office immediately. Almost all of our contact with you will be by phone, text or email for the next few weeks. Please keep in touch! Don’t forget to phone us if your circumstances change or you begin to feel unwell. Our intention is to provide you with services and support for as long as possible. Kind regards Claire Roach, CEO OFFICE NUMBERS Australind

Human Resources Team The Human Resources Department is all about managing people within an organization for the benefit of all. The role of the Human Resources Team at South West Community Care is to ensure that our organisation has a workforce that is sufficient, skilled and qualified to provide kind, caring, safe, respectful and quality care and services to all our consumers.
The Human Resources Team is responsible for recruiting and hiring all employees at South West Community Care. All employees are carefully screened in interviews, police checks are completed and references are all contacted. This gives us the confidence that your care is secure in their hands. We are also privileged with the tasks of recruiting and inducting volunteers into the organisation. As volunteers play such an important role in delivering services to you, it is important that they uphold our values and have the same passion to work within the age care industry as do the rest of the staff. We work to ensure our employees have access to training, enabling them to provide safe and quality care services to you, our consumers. We encourage employees to participate in traineeship programs where they can work and gain experience and a qualification at the same time. The Human Resources Team also plays a large role in promoting and supporting Occupational Health and Safety across the organisation.

Jo Saunders – Human Resources Manager “I have worked with South West Community Care for 2.5 years. I recently moved into the role of Human Resources Manager, and am very excited to take on this new opportunity. My previous roles with South West Community Care have sparked a passion for our organisation and the aged care industry, where I can contribute on a daily basis and assist our consumers with receiving the required services to stay in their own homes. Prior to commencing with South West Community Care, I worked in the Agriculture Industry in several different roles, including assisting my husband to manage large scale dairy farms both in Australia and New Zealand. When I am not working, I enjoy spending time in the sunshine with my husband and young children aged 10 and 4 years.”
Dayna Jacob —Human Resources Officer “I am 21 years old and have resided in Harvey with my family my entire
life. I completed all of my schooling in the South West and am currently studying my Bachelor of Primary Education at Edith Cowan University in Bunbury. I am in my fourth and final year of study and am excited to have the end in sight. I have been at South West Community Care since 2016. I began here doing work placement whilst in my final year of school, then moved onto become a volunteer later that year. In 2017 I started as a casual Administration Officer before moving into my current position as Recruitment Officer in late 2018. I thoroughly enjoy my role in Human Resources as it gives our team the rewarding opportunities to recruit high calibre employees and to source ongoing training for our employees’ professional development. Our work environment is a happy one and we are united in our passion to gain the best outcomes for our consumers.” www.swcommunitycare.org.au

Kristy Stalteri —Human Resources Officer Twenty one years ago, I was born in Harvey and I have grown up and completed my schooling here. I joined the South West Community Care team at the beginning of 2019. I started as an Administration Officer in all three areas and have been working in my current role as Recruitment Officer since July 2019. I thoroughly enjoy working in Human Resources, which has led me to commence my traineeship in a Certificate IV in Human Resources that I will be completing this year. I love my role, as it allows us to select a high quality of staff for our company. This ensures we are providing our consumers with the best possible services, which is highly reflected through our awards and 100% Compliance received in 2019. South West Community Care is an amazing company to work for and each day I look forward to the rewarding challenges that come our way!

Bunnings Workshops
Bunnings hold a workshop for our Eaton Social Centre participants on a regular basis.
In February, the project was the making of wooden bird feeders . All pieces had to be assembled and then secured in place. The banging in of nails, gluing of parts and painting of designs kept all very busy for the morning, amongst a lot of laughter. This project was a popular one indeed and now there is the added satisfaction for all our hard working consumers, of watching the birds enjoying the feeders in their own gardens.

What is social distancing and why is it important? Social distancing includes ways to stop or slow the spread of infectious diseases. It means less contact between you and other people. Social distancing is important because COVID-19 is most likely to spread from person-to-person through: direct close contact with a person while they are infectious or in the 24 hours before their symptoms appeared close contact with a person with a confirmed infection who coughs or sneezes, or touching objects or surfaces (such as door handles or tables) contaminated from a cough or sneeze from a person with a confirmed infection, and then touching your mouth or face. So, the more space between you and others, the harder it is for the virus to spread.
What can I do? If you are sick, stay away from others – that is the most important thing you can do. You should also practise good hand and sneeze/cough hygiene:
wash your hands frequently with soap and water, before and after eating, and after going to the toilet cover your cough and sneeze, dispose of tissues, and use alcoholbased hand sanitiser, and if unwell, avoid contact with others (stay more than 1.5 metres from people).
As well as these, you can start a range of social distancing and low cost hygiene actions now. These simple, common sense actions help reduce risk to you and to others. They will help to slow the spread of disease in the community – and you can use them every day – in your home, workplace, school and while out in public. Information from health.gov.au 12

Social distancing at home To reduce the spread of germs1: Practise good hand and sneeze/cough hygiene Avoid handshaking and kissing Regularly disinfect high touch surfaces, such as tables, kitchen benches and doorknobs Increase ventilation in the home by opening windows or adjusting air conditioning Visit shops sparingly and buy more goods and services online
Consider whether outings and travel, both individual and family, are sensible and necessary
Social distancing in public
Sanitise your hands wherever possible, including entering and leaving buildings Use tap and pay rather than handling money Try to travel at quiet times and try to avoid crowds Public transport workers and taxi drivers should open vehicle windows where possible, and regularly clean and disinfect high touch surfaces.

Pubs, registered and licensed clubs (excluding bottle shops attached to these venues), hotels (excluding accommodation). Gyms and indoor sporting venues. Cinemas, entertainment venues, casinos and night clubs. Restaurants and cafes will be restricted to takeaway and/or home delivery. Your Story
Happy 80th Birthday!
On 19th February 2020, Jean Hutton celebrated her 8Oth Birthday. Jean attends the Eaton Social Centre on a regular basis and is a very eager participant in all the activities. Jean enjoys the company of all at the centre and is most grateful for these friendships. Mr Bean is her favourite character and Jean matches him with her sense of humour and cheekiness! Tia said: "We enjoyed the morning on our Bunnings outing, where Jean banged together an impressive wooden bird feeder. On our return to the Eaton Social Centre, we celebrated her special day with a little mud cake and we sang a hearty rendition of “Happy Birthday.”
Jean’s family gave her an experience of a lifetime in a 30 minute flight in a Tiger Moth plane over Busselton. Jean said she couldn’t believe how small everything was from up there and woke up the next day asking to go again. Jean strongly recommends that we all take a flip over the ocean! Doris, her sister, whom she hasn’t seen for 12 years, came over from Cairns to celebrate Jean’s milestone birthday with her. Jean loved every minute of her birthday excitement and wore the biggest smile for ages!” 16

Men’s Shed Harvey Wally Anderson Wally was born in Margaret River on 20 August 1942. His family moved to Capel and as a teen Wally lived in Burekup where he began working on a farm, milking cows. He worked on several dairy farms over the years and then did a brief stint as a postie in Perth. In Perth, Wally met the lovely Judy, whom he married and brought back to Brunswick. Wally and Judy have lived in their home in Brunswick for forty years. Wally took on a job at Peters Creamery in Brunswick where he worked on the bottling of milk. He was then placed in charge of the rolling of the different powders that were produced there. Powders were made for powdered milk, for cooking purposes and also as feed for calves. Wally also helped out in the butter and cheese sections when required. On his days off, Wally helped his friend ,Tony, who owns Evedon Park Bush Retreat with general maintenance and gardening and was proud to see the retreat develop over the years.
Wally worked at Peters Creamery for 35 years until his retirement. Men’s Shed on a Tuesday is a special place for Wally and he attends regularly where he thoroughly enjoys the company of the men and gets involved in odd tasks. Wally was involved in the bench making project for the local Catholic school. Benches were made by the men and placed under the trees at the school for the students to enjoy.
Wally’s advice to all: Be Honest—with yourself and the world. www.swcommunitycare.org.au

Terry McCaughan
Volunteer
Volunteer Driver Terry was born and educated in the Bunbury area and married local girl Barbara. Terry has a long employment history in Local Government and Safety Management, with a short period of being a self-employed draftsperson. He has two daughters and five grandchildren to keep him on his toes! Besides his family, Terry’s interests are travel and genealogy. Terry served as a member of the SWCC Board for one year. One of our regular and reliable volunteer drivers, Terry’s commitment to his role is greatly appreciated by all. Terry is always ready to jump in when the need requires and will help anyone at any time. Always smiling and with a library of his own stories , Terry is a firm favourite with our Eaton and Australind passengers. Terry is also willing to do the long drives to and from Perth, which allows many of our consumers manage to get to medical appointments. Why volunteer? “There are many within our community who need assistance with transport and cannot always find a reliable or affordable option. Talking to and sharing experiences with people is great. I will continue to volunteer and serve the community for as long as I am able.” Thank you, Terry, for your commitment and selfless service.
