January Front Cover— Did you recognise Sugar Loaf Rock? One of the most photographed seascapes in Western Australia, Sugarloaf Rock is in the Leeuwin-Naturaliste National Park and dominates the coastline near Cape Naturaliste. You can see experienced rock fishermen taking up the challenge from the edge of the rock – but the powerful swell is not for amateurs. There is a great lookout point to view the rock and the bird and sea life. Access Sugarloaf Rock via Sugarloaf Rock Road west of Dunsborough. 2

A word from our CEO– Claire Roach ….and the word is consolidation. I hope everyone had an enjoyable Christmas and the opportunity to catch up with friends and family over the new year period. 2020 is going to be a great year for South West Community Care. We have had a few of our employees say goodbye at the end of 2019 to work elsewhere or relocate to other places – several moving to Tasmania. Maybe it’s cooler weather there? Some new people have joined the staff ranks and you may meet some of them in 2020. 2019 was an extremely busy year for the employees of South West Community Care. We won several awards recognising service excellence and concluded the year with being audited by the Aged Care Quality and Safety Commission. We passed this audit with 100% compliance – a real affirmation of the quality services we provide. This year we want to consolidate the new SWCC quality system and processes we put in place in 2019. We want to continually improve our services to you and make sure we are worthy of the title “WA Aged Care Provider of the Year”. We also want to get out and about to community events, have “pop-up” stands in shopping centres and generally meet with the public and get in touch with potential consumers. 2020 will be an exciting year for the SWCC staff, and we hope it will be a happy and healthy one for you!

Consumer Liaison Team—CHSP This role is wide-ranging. An essential role that we are able to assist you with, is navigating the journey through the Aged Care System in particular with entry level CHSP services (Commonwealth Home Support Programme) supports. We understand that your goal is to stay living safely and independently at home, our goal is to help you achieve this. Understanding options in community aged care can be a little overwhelming so we are here to help you make sense of it all. The Consumer Liaison Team members are able to provide CHSP service supports by providing you and your family members with information and links to other programs that may be identified as suitable for you. If you are still quite independent and active, you might need only a bit of help with daily chores. Or you might need more help to maintain your independence, and keep active and engaged in your local community. There is a vast range of services we may be able to assist you with. Please call us and one of our friendly Liaison Team members will be happy to visit you. Chrissy Williams “I grew up in New Zealand on a dairy farm with 9 siblings (I have a twin) and immigrated to Brisbane Australia in 1988, moving to Perth WA in 1989. I studied nursing and have worked in residential aged care, disabilities and community centres for most of my working life. I have held several roles during my six years with South West Community Care, including Transport Coordinator, Activities Organiser & now as Consumer Liaison Team Leader in Harvey. This variety has allowed me to experience many aspects of community care, and I find it very rewarding to enable our consumers to remain living at home with our support. 4

Leeanne Lewis Leeanne is based in Australind and in January this year, celebrated 10 years’ service with SWCC— CONGRATULATIONS! “My family made the sea change from Kalgoorlie to the South West and we have lived in Australind for 15 years. During my working years I have held a variety of positions in different industries. I do find that my position as Consumer Liaison Team Leader in Aged Care is a career role that I find the most fulfilling. I find one of the highest privileges of working with our seniors is hearing their stories. It could be a recollection of romance, life achievements, tales of family or sometimes accounts of war, but they are stories that can transport you to another time and help you understand the person you are supporting and how best to do this. My 10 years at SWCC have been satisfying, it is easy to get up and go to work when you know that what you do as a job genuinely makes a difference.”

Shelly de Filippo Shelly is based in Eaton. “ I have worked in Human Services in the Bunbury area for the last 27 years. I joined SWCC one year ago and have been proud of the award-winning services we are able to offer our consumers. My passion is working along side people, supporting them to remain independent in their own home and in charge of their lives. I enjoy meeting people to provide them with opportunities and choices that assist them to obtain services, so they remain living in their local community surrounded by family and friends.” www.swcommunitycare.org.au

Your story

Quilting Pleasure

Daphne lives in Australind and is constantly working to help others. Daphne belongs to a busy group called Charity Chicks, who operate from the Hudson Road Community Centre every Thursday morning. This is a quilting sewing group who produce quilts for many deserving causes. Daphne has converted two of the rooms in her home into material and sewing rooms and is constantly hard at work creating beautiful quilts.

Quilts created and donated:  

Moms who experience a stillbirth are given a memory quilt Palliative care patients receive special bags created to hold monitor pumps.  Foster children receive bags to carry their belongings.  Parents who suffer the loss of a child or baby receive a memory quilt.  Premature babies receive beanies.  Fun table runners are made and shared. All the materials are donated and work is all voluntary. Daphne’s unerring generosity of her time and skills has brought much joy to people at times of extreme stress. Daphne is very modest about these contributions but is aware of the positive impact these quilts and gifts have on the people who receive them. If you would like to donate materials or join Daphne and assist with sewing, give us a call and we will put you in touch with Daphne. Well done, Daphne, keep up the great work!

Volunteer —Marie Gelmie

Volunteer

Marie has lived in the Bunbury area most of her life. She grew up on a farm in Waterloo and completed her schooling in Bunbury. When Marie married she moved to Dardanup and became very involved in the local community. She brought up her four children there; managed the school canteen, was involved with the sports teams and Brownies groups over the years. Marie and her family also owned and ran a horse stud in Brunswick. Marie worked as a hospital receptionist for 25 years. Marie has certainly kept very active within the community and has also been able to offer her services as a volunteer for over fifteen years! “ I have always enjoyed helping people. I love meeting and assisting people. Listening to their stories is so inspiring. For the last sixteen months, I have been a volunteer at SWCC. I help out at the Eaton Social Centre and enjoy chats, games, story time, encouraging people to complete activities that they do not think they can do and go on outings with the participants. They have become one big happy family to me! Many of the consumers are also used to seeing me arrive at their doorstep to take them on a trip to the doctor or a destination of their choice, as their volunteer transport driver. I find the role as a volunteer most rewarding “ We all truly appreciate the support that Marie provides to all at SWCC, and always with a big smile and kind word.

Thank you, Marie. www.swcommunitycare.org.au
