Congratulations Michelle Olde, our HCP Care Manager based in Harvey, recently received her new degree. Bachelor of Social Science (Gerontology & Healthy Ageing) “A gerontology degree provides information and learning in regards to the physical, psychological, and social challenges that older people face. My studies included theoretical approaches to adult development, an overview of healthcare and social services designed for the ageing population, and public policy analysis. It covered subjects such as Grief and Loss, Ethics, Case Management, Communications and Human Services. Credit was given based on my previous qualification of Assoc. Dip. Health Science. As my name is Mrs Olde - it seemed very fitting to study Gerontology. I loved the learning and knowledge that the degree gave me. SWCC is a wonderful organisation that supports and assists our community with healthy ageing. I feel honoured to be a Care Manager for consumers in this region.

NEW STANDARDS FOR AGED CARE INFORMATION SESSIONS The two Information Sessions held in September were well attended. Deborah Gunson, our Business Operations Manager, explained the New Standards for Aged Care and the Charter of Age Care Rights to all attendees. Everyone was given the opportunity to ask questions to clarify their understanding of how these standards impact on their care and services. These sessions were followed by a delicious morning tea with special treats prepared by our Thyme and Place chefs.

Lou and Kieran Dowd, both qualified chefs, started Thyme and Place in 2015 with the aim of providing great quality function catering at a reasonable price. Lou trained in the UK and worked as sous chef at the Establishment Restaurant in London's West End before moving into the event industry where she was company director for an international conference company based in London. Kieran has worked in the hospitality industry for over 30 years and has managed bars and restaurants in London, Germany, and the United States. Kieran was head chef at the Highway Hotel in Bunbury and the Crooked Carrot, Myalup, WA. Thyme and Place are delighted to now be providing catering services to South West Community Care and their commitment to providing great quality catering using local produce, where possible, continues.

Take Home Meals Lou and Kieran create nutritious, balanced meals which are freshly made and designed to maintain their integrity when frozen and reheated. The menu offers a variety of cuisines which provide a delightful choice for the palate! These meals can be ordered monthly and collected from either the Eaton or Harvey office. Special for November: Buy 6 meals and get one extra meal free. Orders to be placed by 25th October. www.swcommunitycare.org.au

Happy 99th Birthday Eileen!

Eileen was born in England on 25 August 1920. In her early twenties, Eileen made her way to Australia. She has two sons, Bruce and Kevin, both of whom live in WA. Eileen lives independently with her loyal companion, Bella– her beautiful dog. The SWCC team members, led by Care Manager Kayelene, all play a vital role in caring for Eileen. Eileen celebrated her 99th birthday with her care team recently. Cake, laughter, chatter and party poppers were enjoyed by all. Eileen shared some of her precious memories about her family, the war days and her life in Australia.

MEN’S SHED HARVEY

Bob Hall, proudly posing in the Eden Grove Function Centre, Harvey, with three of the six framed panels he completed recently. The photographs and information in these panels depict scenes dating back to 1940 when the site was used as an internment camp. 1942– 1945: The 3rd Australian Corps used the site as a training school for troops. 1947: Rural Training Centre on site where ex servicemen were trained in farming methods. From 1953: The Agricultural Wing of Harvey Senior School started here and in 1998 transitioned into Harvey Agricultural College , which operated on this site until 2012. In March 2014,South West Community Care found its base on this magnificent site, rich in history.

Don't Slide - Confide ___________________________ Standing there, in a sea of grass A talking point, for those who pass Surrounded, by a field of green Painted brightly, so they are seen Meant to be, a stark expression About pitfalls, of depression To high light problems, oh so true A long dead tree, that's painted blue It's meant to make us, all aware Of underlying, problems there That depression, is a finite thing And mental tensions, it does bring The message given, is quite clear Please talk to those, that you hold dear Far better, that you do confide Than to contemplate, suicide Talking can be, your cornerstone You may find, you are not alone For if you do, then you may be On your way, to recovery Talking to others, of your woe Definitely, the way to go For the one thing, that you must do Is look beyond, that tree of Blue
