About the School of Arts The School of Arts was established in 1886, and today remains central to the Malvern campus of South Worcestershire College. We offer a contemporary programme enriched by the inclusion of the traditional Art and Crafts areas from our heritage. Our Summer School for adults is well-established, friendly and taught by professional artists. The College is situated at the foot of the hills, in the Victorian Spa town of Malvern. If you are visiting for a summer break, Malvern is an ideal base for exploring the Heart of England. There is a good range of accommodation in the area and the Tourist Information Centre (01684 892289) will be happy to assist visitors with bookings, and advise on other local attractions. Summer School caters for many different interests. Classes range from short half days through to 2 day events; and we have included a timetable on P16 to help you choose and plan. Current students can extend their studies, and others may come as a holiday treat. Teachers find the Summer School useful for inspiring new ideas, and for many people it gives a chance to try something new. We have a large car park and are within walking distance of the local train station. Our refectory offers a variety of hot and cold lunchtime meals, and drinks and snacks during the day. Enjoy browsing the booklet. This one day workshop uses digital presentations, mixedmedia exercises and interactive activities to explore colour theory and its application in art and design. On a voyage of discovery you will be introduced to the elements of hue, value and intensity, understand the function of the colour wheel and explore colour mixing, colour relationships, emotion and colour.
Over two days, students will unlock the hidden secrets of the human skeleton; discover the form and characteristics of all the main muscle groups; and learn how anatomical understanding can aid more expressive, creative and inventive figure drawings.

Abstract Painting painting and drawing. She trained at Goldsmiths College, London and now teaches both privately and in Art Colleges. During this workshop students will investigate a number of different starting points for non-representational work, with colour being of primary importance. A brief presentation of abstract paintings will inspire discussion of possibilities. Some experience would be helpful, but you do not need to be a practising painter. You are welcome to bring any medium and by the end of day you will be able to produce an abstract painting.

Art Flower Painting
Life Drawing with Expression
Kim Williams is an experienced tutor whose paintings and charcoal drawings, specialising in flowers, interiors and the landscape, are exhibited internationally. Over two days students will be shown the process of creating an impressive flower painting in either oils or acrylics. Students will select and arrange flowers into a suitably lit composition and be guided through the processes of initial lay-in and under-painting to the finished picture. During the course, Kim will also give an informative talk and slideshow on her own flower paintings, detailing her methods and procedures, and relating these to the great still life and flower painters of the past. This one day workshop covers all the practicalities of presenting art works including cutting window mounts, selecting mouldings and mount board, glass cutting, some decorative frame finishes and preparing a portfolio for interview.
Students will be given the opportunity in this workshop to explore the beautiful medium of pastels - using either oil or soft pastels, students will create a beautiful still life.

Issy Lammas trained as a Painter/Printmaker at
Harrogate and Cheltenham, and works in a variety of mediums. She is keen to encourage less toxic forms of printmaking and loves experimenting with new approaches. Explore the rich diversity of images that can be produced using simple equipment and oil-based printing inks. Enjoy the spontaneous approach of monotypes and the flexibility of monoprinting, and discover the secrets of painterly printmaking. experienced tutor. As a practising artist, Brian has found sketching and the use of sketchbooks to be the essence of good practice.
Access to Art
This one day course looks at how working in sketchbooks can train the observing eye and the drawing hand to give greater flight to expression and feeling; and serve as an engine to thought and ideas. Students will look at examples of the sketchbook work of practising artists and designers; explore various drawing materials and tackle a number of sketching projects throughout the day. Traditional Illustration Marianne Ryan is a practising artist specialising in

Ukraine and has been making unusual creative books since 1998. She is a member of the Society of Bookbinders and the local Guild of Designer Craftsmen.
Orthodox Style Binding
Anna will introduce traditional full-leather Orthodox Binding and show you the different skills involved in this process. Students will create a cover design and learn how to make and attach traditional fasteners. This one day workshop is designed for experienced bookbinders but beginners are also welcome. Crossed Structure Leather Binding
In this workshop, Anna will lead students through making a Basic Crossed Structure Binding, a full leather notebook with clean-cut edges. Calligraphy for Beginners
Working in a friendly group setting, this workshop will provide an introduction to Calligraphy. Guidance will be given according to individual need, and the Italic style will be used to teach calligraphic fluency. Providing an in depth experience of Calligraphy including gold in calligraphic design, this can be taken as a stand alone class or as an extension to the one above. Students will be introduced to the Foundational lettering style also known as Roundhand to produce a piece of work in poetry or prose. Following a demonstration of gilding using techniques of laying flat gold, students will be able to gild their own choice of letters based on medieval illumination. Crafts Clay Day
Papermaking
Heather Barningham has established her own studio and developed her personal style including a range of stoneware ceramics. She exhibits regularly and is a member of the Worcester Guild of Designer Craftsmen.
Enjoy a day exploring the versatility of clay where Heather will provide design ideas and help you develop your own project. Individual tuition will be given in both throwing (using the wheel) and hand building using coiling. Suitable for beginners and those with some experience.
She uses hand-made paper extensively both with her students and in her own mixed media work.
Making paper is great fun and the basic techniques are so easy that only ordinary household equipment is needed. We will make a range of papers and explore the effects created by embossing, laminating, colour mixing, creating pattern, and using additives in the pulp. The resulting handmade papers can be used for a variety of 2D, 3D, fine art or craft work purposes.
Fired items will be available for collection in the Autumn term.
Materials will be supplied but students may like to bring in some more personal resources to create individual papers for their own artwork.

Kiln Fired Glass kiln fired wall panels and bespoke items in her studio.
Suitable for beginners, and students who are already experienced in glass, this popular course will introduce you to the contemporary techniques of working with fused glass. Learn how to cut and prepare glass for fusing, in order to create a beautiful hanging panel or tile. Techniques include experimenting with bullseye glass, frits and stringers, and entrapping metal within the fused glass. Crafts Stained Glass Liz Huppert is an experienced tutor and Stained Glass
artist using a Tiffany copper technique. Inspired by nature and embellished with coloured wire work and etching, her work takes on an intricate three dimensional quality. This two day course will give beginners an introduction to this interesting, varied and enjoyable craft. You will be introduced to techniques such as copper foiling and leaded work, and the basics of design and glass cutting. Sculpture Sculpture Workshops Guy Woodford is an experienced sculptor who
originally trained in Figurative Sculpture and much of his own work has been figurative. Over the 40 years he has been teaching here, he has developed expertise in both traditional and contemporary approaches to sculpture, including woodcarving, stone carving, modelling, construction, subtractive processes and abstraction. Guy is well known for his own sculpture commissions and exhibitions and for the hundreds of students he has taught successfully.
Abstract Sculpture
Abstraction has been part of sculpture since its early beginnings. In this two day workshop you will make an abstract sculpture, big and bold. Using a chicken wire armature, you will build up layers of durable plaster reinforced with scrim. Various tools and techniques will allow you to explore different surface treatments. Sculpture for Painters
You have the choice between a one day course (Friday 17th) working on a portrait head or two days (Tuesday 14th & Wednesday 15th)working on the whole figure, or you may opt for both workshops. Painters of the human form can benefit enormously from studying the same form in three dimensions. Working from a live model you will increase your understanding of basic anatomy and of the amazing flexibility of the human body - and the expressiveness of the face. If you have never dared to use a machine for anything other than traditional stitching, why not learn how to use it to draw and paint? Caroline will show you how machine embroidery features in contemporary textiles and then introduce you to exciting techniques to try for yourself.
Materials for all workshops are provided within the cost, and are naturally dyed. Helen also provides comprehensive notes which students will find useful when working at home.
She enjoys teaching free machine embroidery and uses it extensively in her own work because it is easy, quick and fun!

You will be guided through a range of techniques for appliqué using either a sewing machine and/or hand stitching. Come and enjoy uncovering a patchwork mystery. How can a few simple but effective cuts into a basic 9-patch block create so many beautiful, complex and unique quilt tops?

This workshop will help you in the understanding of colour combinations; both opaque and transparent. The effective use of simple hand stitches will be explored to create sumptuous panels. All materials are included in the cost of this course. Wed 15 August, 10am - 4.30pm Ref: MSUN145
Sarah Fincken is a textile artist and experienced teacher. She incorporates a variety of textile techniques in her work specialising in colour, dye and rich embellishment.
This course is designed to explore the delights of dyeing and stitching a Japanese fabric bowl using both traditional hand and contemporary sewing techniques. On day one explore textural stitching patterns before making samples of hand wrapped parcels of fabrics and dyeing them in indigo dye. Take your work home to wash and dry overnight. Day two consists of using your prepared fabric to stitch and create your own unique bowl.
