Useful Information

Course Fees/Concessions: The Government, through the Education Funding Agency and the Skills Funding Agency, makes funding available for some learners to cover the tuition costs of their programme (for example, those in receipt of certain benefits). The Secretary of State does not expect tuition fees to be charged to full-time or part-time 16-18 year old students on courses marked with an * in this Course Guide). Full details on eligibility can be found at www.education.gov.uk or at www.skillsfundingagency.bis.gov.uk or contact the College’s Learner Services.

Concessions may be available on courses marked with a R in this Guide.

If you qualify for tuition fee remission, a copy of the evidence showing that you fall within the approved remission categories must be obtained and attached to your learning agreement in order that the appropriate tuition fee remission may be claimed by us from the relevant agency. There may still be examination and/or material fees to pay - these are NOT subject to a reduction. Please contact Learner Services for further details or if you have any queries.

Anyone applying for a full-time or part-time course and who will be in receipt of funding must supply one of the following forms of ID: Relationship with school, Passport, Driving Licence, ID Card or other form of national identification, National Insurance card, Certificate of Entitlement to Funding, Bank/Credit/Debit card.

Employer Financing: We are able to invoice employers on production of a completed Fee Authorised Form FA1 (or FA2 form for companies who are booking more than one employee onto a course) available from Learner Services, together with completed enrolment forms for each employee. Payment by employers can also be made by company cheque or credit card together with the forms as above. Refunds: Refunds will not be made to students who, having enrolled, find the course unsuitable or are unable to attend, as these matters should be determined prior to enrolling. There will be no refunds for withdrawal from a one term course, regardless of circumstance. Any refund that is granted due to exceptional circumstances will be subject to a standard retention fee of 20% of the total course fee. Information and a Refund Application Form can be obtained from Learner Services.

Additional Fees (marked E, R or C in this Course Guide): Some examination and certification fees have been included in the prices listed and must be paid when enrolling, however exam fees on some courses are extra and are payable when entering or registering for an exam. For further information the College Examination Officers can be contacted at Evesham on (01386) 712604 or at Malvern on (01684) 584552. Materials and Equipment (marked M in this Course Guide): Some courses require the use of specialist materials or equipment which may incur additional costs. You will be advised of this when you enrol. Students are advised not to purchase additional items until they are sure that the class will be running.

Attendance and Withdrawals: Course subsidies to the College are withdrawn if a student fails to attend. The College will assume you have left a course if you fail to attend for 4 consecutive weeks. At that point your place may be allocated to another student. If you know you may be absent but wish to continue your attendance at a later date, or if you wish to leave your course, please inform the Course Tutor in writing. Course Cancellations: Minimum student numbers are required for courses to run. The College reserves the right to cancel or combine a course due to insufficient recruitment and will aim to give a minimum of 3 days' notice. Students may be offered the opportunity to transfer to a similar course which may be at a different time or day, or request a refund. The College very much regrets having to cancel courses at short notice - please help us to avoid this by enrolling no later than 7 days before the start of your chosen course.

Mandy Carwood studied Art History at the Barbour Institute and is an exceptional tutor with a passion for exploring Art History. This talk will complement Tate

Britain’s exhibition Lowry and the Painting of Modern Life, opening in summer 2013 which will reappraise Lowry and argue for his achievement as Britain’s preeminent painter of the industrial city. Just like Bruegel and Hogarth before him, Lowry painted in direct response to his environment. We are familiar with his representations of northern industrial life with his limited palette, small stick like figures and panoramic backgrounds. Yet, what do we know of his haunting

SUMMER SCHOOL 2013

We have some exciting courses planned for Summer School 2013, details of which can be found on page 5 of this Course Guide.

Many of our Summer School students return year after year to learn a new skill or begin a new hobby. The appeal for many of our returning students is the opportunity to be taught by professional artists, many of whom are working artists who are well thought of in their field of expertise, with some having work exhibited in national galleries. Here’s an opportunity to find out about some of the tutors teaching at this year’s Summer School. Julia Beard graduated with a Fine Art Degree from Cheltenham School of Art. She is an experienced teacher who has exhibited work at various galleries including the Royal Academy.

Helen Melvin is a textile artist working with natural dyes and felt using unique techniques founded on ancient traditions and contemporary art. Her art reflects the colours and textures of the natural world as well as decay and disintegration. As a tutor she encourages both individual creativity and good skills.

EOAC student Aaron Singleton chose to leave school at 16 to go into employment. He progressed to being the manager of a local store but as he did not find this challenging enough he started to look at the alternative options that were available to him. Aaron had visited friends at universities in Birmingham and Sheffield and whilst there took the opportunity to experience a few lectures so that he could sample student life. “I liked the university environment and could imagine myself studying there. At the time I thought that the only way to get into university was to progress on from school, but I soon discovered that there are alternative ways for adults to get into university. I have now applied to join the Access to HE course at SWC, which is a one year course that prepares you for university study. Between now and the start of the course in September I am working on improving my maths skills on one of the free maths courses on offer at the Evesham Open Access Centre (EOAC) based at the College.”

Aaron attends a three hour session at the EOAC, once a week, where he has an individual learning plan in addition to working on skills in a small, friendly, supported group. He will take a Functional Skills Level 2 qualification which will prepare him for the rigours of the Access course in 2013/14.

“Aaron’s commitment and enthusiasm combined with skilled staff will ensure that he will achieve the first step on his goal of starting a Sports degree at university in 2014” said Jane Gibbs, Manager of the EOAC.

Speak Italian Are you interested in learning this beautiful language? We have a range of italian courses from beginners to advanced. All of these groups concentrate on conversation.

Our tutor is Manuella Cherchi, a native speaker who has built up a good following of students who want to learn Italian. Some of her students have holiday homes in Italy, some have business connections and some just want to make their holiday experience more enjoyable.

Italian Cookery

Our Italian Cookery course is for those who want to develop the art of making pasta, italian breads or just preparing a nice italian meal to impress friends and family. Cookery students are able to use our newly re-furbished training kitchen. Numbers are limited for this popular course which has been re-introduced to our programme for the summer term.

Students can join the Speak Italian 1 and 2 courses and then progress on to the more advanced conversation group which we have established over the past three years.

The College offers a range of language courses, including daytime and evening classes, that run between 6 to 10 weeks throughout the year. Please refer to page 31 of this Guide for summer term course details or contact Jane Dunn on (01386) 712648 for further information.

Photography

Whether you want to learn how to use your new digital camera or you are keen to develop your skills as a photographer, we offer courses at different levels which can help you to improve your photography skills.

Our Part-time recreational tutors are Chris Warren and Paul Dyer. Students will be able to benefit from their vast experience as professional photographers, learning tricks of the trade to produce some professional looking photographs. This year, during the summer term, we are offering a photography masterclass; a two day course for those who would like to learn about using an add-on flash with their digital camera, to ensure great photographic results.

For those photographers who would like to enhance their photos, we are introducing a course on Adobe Lightroom for Beginners, an affordable, easy to use, piece of software which is a tool for photographers to use to create inspiring photography.
