Your future starts here Welcome to the 2013 Full-time Course Guide! This Guide is a great place to find out about the courses on offer at South Worcestershire College. You will also find out about events happening throughout the coming year which are designed to help you choose the right course. Once you have had a look through this Guide, coming to an Open Event is a great next step. You and your family can come and have a look around at the excellent facilities on offer and have an informal chat with the tutors about any of the courses that you may be interested in. Following your visit to an Open Event you will hopefully have an idea of which subject you would like to study. The best way to be really sure of the course that you want to join is to come along to a ‘Have a Go’ session and try a course out (see page 6 for details). Joining College is an exciting time. You will immediately notice that College has a very different atmosphere from school; calling tutors by their first names, not wearing school uniform and coming into College for just a few days each week are some of the many things that make our students feel like they are studying in a more adult environment. During your time at College you will have plenty of opportunities to join in activities, take part in social events and raise lots of money at charity events.

Choosing the right course is a big decision and there are College events organised throughout the year to help you get it right. If you are undecided about which subject to study, think about which subjects you enjoy at school, or about the hobbies that you enjoy. Do you enjoy practical activities or do you prefer to study in a classroom setting? Are you creative? Do you like to mix with new people on a daily basis? Answers to these types of questions can help you with your decision to choose a course. Once you have decided on a subject, the best way to make a decision about the right course for you is to come on one of our free ‘Have a Go’ sessions (see dates on the opposite page) to try a course out for a few hours. These sessions are designed to be fun and informative and are a great way to experience a College course and College life before you apply to join a course. To book your place all you need to do is complete the booking form on page 81 of this Course Guide and post it in to us. Why not also come to an Open Event? It’s a great opportunity to have a look around the College and have an informal chat with the tutors about any of the courses that you are interested in. Also your parents may like to come along to the College to have a look around and meet some of the tutors.

We look forward to seeing you here very soon! Leah Coulson , Travel and Tourism student Visit www.sworcs.ac.uk/full-time to find out why I recommend South Worcestershire College 6

Following a year studying Health and Social Care, Shaane Green, aged 19, decided to change direction and look for a receptionist position. However all the positions she looked at required experience. She asked her Jobcentre Plus advisor how she could improve her CV and it was recommended that she consider voluntary work experience. There was a work experience opportunity within South Worcestershire College and as this was both local and relevant Shaane applied straight away. Since starting with the College five months ago Shaane has been an active member of the Learner Services team. She has undertaken a range of Reception duties including greeting visitors, processing post and selling stationery. She has also helped with a series of mailings and set up files and forms to help plan for enrolment. Following the success of the work experience, Shaane applied for the Administration Apprenticeship position which became available at the College and was successfully appointed to this position. She now works on the College’s reception and in the administration office for four days each week and attends college workshops one day each week.

Nick is a hard working, aspirational learner who has managed to juggle work, caring for his family and children, college study, extra maths qualification, an advanced re-build and modification project on his Celica GT4, all of which has resulted in securing a place on a Foundation Degree in Motor Sport for next year.

Stacey’s development over the last two years has been truly exceptional. The once shy and introverted student who arrived in 2010 is leaving the College a mature and confident individual. A role model for others, Stacey has demonstrated that through perseverance and determination success can be achieved. She is now improving her own abilities to achieve her goal of entering the Royal Navy.

Lucy has been an exemplary student. She is determined to succeed, and never misses out on the opportunity to expand her own beauty business, which she has developed over the last 12 months.

Acer had a conversation with the Head of Academy on day one in College. This suggested that Acer did not feel he could succeed in College and he knew that others felt the same. The Head of Academy took this opportunity to advise Acer that it was up to him to prove to everyone that they were wrong and that he could achieve his goal of running his own business. Acer’s determination to turn himself around won him this Award.

Terri has been a Business Administration Apprentice for two years. She has had a variety of employers during her Apprenticeship due to external factors, but has kept herself positive throughout these changes of employment. She has grown in strength, confidence and abilities and has transferred her increasing skills from one employer to another. She now has a role with responsibility and challenge, where she is an integral member of the team.

Recently Lucy has acquired a part-time position with Clarins. This helped Lucy to add to her portfolio of skills and to invest further into her business. Lucy is an inspiration to her fellow students.

At South Worcestershire College Functional Skills are an essential part of your course. Functional Skills involve using your English and Maths ability to solve problems. They are “employability skills, which employers want their staff to have as well as GCSE passes. You may have already studied Maths and English at school, but when you work on these subjects at College you will be able to learn ways of applying your GCSE learning to practical, everyday situations. It is vital that you can use English and Maths at College, work and for everyday life. As part of your course you will study one or more of the Functional Skills, in separate weekly sessions, so that you build the skills you need to succeed. If you are on a Level 1 course, you will study Maths, English and ICT in your skills sessions. You will do an initial assessment that will identify the level that is best for you to start your study of Maths and English. Your Functional Skills tutor will also work with you towards a qualification. This will involve taking an externally marked test, and if you are doing English your tutor will assess your speaking, listening and communication skills as well. Your tutor will want to make sure that you are ready before entering you for the exam, and you will have the chance to take practice papers before sitting the actual test. This is a great opportunity for you to brush up on your skills and gain the latest qualifications, so you can prove to employers that you can apply your knowledge to your working life.

Money Matters Financial Information The Government, through the Young People’s Learning Agency and the Skills Funding Agency, makes funding available for some learners to cover the tuition costs of their programme. The Secretary of State does not expect tuition fees to be charged to full-time 16-18 year old students, however they will be expected to pay any materials fees. Full-time students aged 19 years and over will be charged tuition fees and will be required to pay examination and certification fees on enrolment (these costs will be confirmed with you at interview). (Adult students 19 years and over may be eligible for tuition fee remission on funded courses if they fall within a specified category eg those in receipt of Job Seekers Allowance or Employment and Support Allowance (WRAG), or those studying for their first Level 2 or Level 3 qualification.)

Financial Assistance You don’t have to let a lack of money stop you from coming to College. If you are on benefits or have a low income and are on one of our courses then there are various funds available. If you are worried that you might struggle financially whilst you are on your course contact the Learner Services Finance Officer on (01386) 712624 or email acraghill@sworcs.ac.uk for a copy of the Financial Assistance Guidelines which provides details about Learner Support Funds and other sources of funding that may be available to you. Funds are limited and will be targeted to those most in need. You can apply for help with material and exam fees, travel, childcare, books and equipment. You can get application forms and full details about all of the funds from the Learner Services Team, which is adjacent to Reception at the Evesham Campus and on Reception at the Malvern Campus.

Transport If you are accepted onto a full-time course at the College and you are between the ages of 16 and 19 years, you may be eligible for travel assistance from your Local Education Authority (LEA). If you have special education needs you may be eligible for assistance if you are under 22. Your Local Education Authority will be able to tell you if you meet their requirements for travel assistance - but you should note that assistance is discretionary and means tested. Hear from an Access to Higher Education Student David Evans, aged 53, spent 22 years working for the Prison Service. His final position was at the Head Office in Burton on Trent, where he was responsible for policy for life sentence prisoners and mother and

Sheila has been very helpful and supportive throughout the course. She expects her students to work to deadlines, however she also understands that she is teaching mature students who have family commitments and so there is flexibility there if needed.

baby units. David had the chance to retire early from the Service and so had the opportunity to consider a change of direction for his future. “I have a lot of working life left and felt it was an ideal time for me to consider my options. I felt that there were a lot of similarities between working in the prison service and mental health nursing. For me, becoming qualified in mental health nursing seemed a logical progression from my career in the Prison Service. I contacted the University of Worcester to find out about the degree courses that they offered in the area of mental health. The University advised me that I would need A Levels to apply for a degree course and this prompted me to contact South Worcestershire College about the Access to Higher Education. I had a long chat with the Access to HE Course Manager, Sheila Jervis, and was able to join the course in the October. We have quite a diverse mix of people on the Access course, the majority of whom are moving on to university to study nursing, whilst others are moving on to teaching, and one on to archaeology. I have enjoyed working with such a great mix of people because you get different perspectives and hear about different people’s experiences. 22

The Access to HE course prepares students for university study – providing study skills that are needed to succeed on a degree course. I am looking forward to starting at the University. From 500 applicants only 31 were accepted on to my course so I realise that this is a great opportunity for me. I will be studying for the BSc Honours in Mental Health for three years. Once qualified there will be many opportunities to work in a diverse range of job roles, such as drug action teams and alcohol agencies. I hope to secure a position as a Mental Health Practitioner in the NHS.”

“I think that you are never too old to learn and at this time in my life when my financial commitments are fewer I feel that this is the ideal time for me to take my career in a new direction .”

Hear from an Accountancy (AAT) Student Rebecca Abunassar, aged 40, is studying on the AAT Level 3 course. “My career, before I had my family, was in insurance, however I had always been interested in accountancy. It was when I took voluntary redundancy and moved with my family from Shropshire that I felt it was the right time to change my career direction. I wanted to do something that would be flexible and fit around family commitments. It was after spending some time as treasurer for the local playgroup that I decided that I would study for an accountancy qualification. I found out that the AAT course was offered at the College and came along for an interview and to find out more about the course. I found out that the course was run over three days each week, during school hours, which fitted perfectly around my home life. Originally I had considered studying for the qualification from home but I decided that studying at College provided the benefits of tutors being on hand to answer questions and also the support of a group who are studying for the same qualification. I look forward to coming into College. Even parking is stress free – there is always a parking space available when I arrive at College at 9.15am and the parking is free of charge. On the course we work on two to three topics at any one time and then we enter a computerised exam – this is

24

flexible and if anyone doesn’t feel ready for an exam they can take it at a later date. If someone fails the exam the opportunity is there to do a re-take. Exam results come back within the hour. It has been really nice to get back into studying and use my brain again to learn. We are a mixed group of school leavers and mature learners and this creates an excellent working environment in class. We have a great relationship with our tutor, Elijah, and he explains things really clearly and he knows his stuff inside out. We work through lots of practice exam papers and everyone in the group helps each other when required – the course provides a great support network as well as a great way to build on your social life.”

“My plan for the future is to work on a self-employed basis doing bookkeeping with a view to progressing onto employment in a school setting as a bursar.”

Level 2 Administration (Business Professional) One year course on offer at the Evesham Campus.

Charlotte Hopkins, aged 20 worked in the Co-op before making the decision to join the Administration Level 3 course which she has been on for the past year. “I had some experience of another local College and so could compare it with South Worcestershire College, where the facilities are much better. This helped me to make my decision to come here. I didn’t know which subject I wanted to study at first but I had a good look on the College website and came across the Administration course. From my time at the Co-op I knew how important Customer Service skills were and because Customer Service was one of the areas covered on the Administration course I applied to join. Hear from an Animal Care Student Jade Hagger, aged 19, always had an interest in animals and thought that it might be an area in which she would like to become qualified. “I had received a College prospectus through school and when I found out that there was going to be a lot of practical work on the Animal Care course I was sure that I would enjoy it. As soon as I started on the Level 1 course I found the staff really friendly and helpful. The Animal Care tutors each have loads of experience in working with animals and it is great to be in their classes and benefit from that. A lot of the work on the course is practical, but you do still have to work on assignments which are assessed. Our practical work is also assessed and photographs are taken as a record of our practical achievements. Work experience is a big part of the Animal Care courses. I have been lucky enough to work at a variety of work experience placements, including a dog groomers, a wildlife animal sanctuary and an aquatic centre. From each of these placements I have come away with different skills such as how to advise customers, how to look after animals in a retail environment and how to read dog body language. 28

I come into College for two and a half days a week and do my assignment work during my time at College. I do this work in the College’s Learning Resource Centre – for me the LRC has been fantastic. The staff there are always happy to help at a moment’s notice. I have completed the Level 2 course and now have another year to go on the Level 3 course and I am really enjoying myself. As well as the Level 3 qualification in Animal Management I will come away with lots of new skills too. My tutors tell me that I have matured a lot since I started at the College. I have thought about what I would like to do when I leave College next summer – I am currently doing my work experience at an aquatic centre and this has given me a new interest that I would like to take further. I would love to work at a Sea Life Centre in the future and gain more experience that way with a view to moving on to become an aquatic tour guide in Australia.”

“One of the tutors has worked with wild animals such as lions and racoons; I think that the College is very lucky to have a tutor with such experience.”

Hear from an Art and Design Student Tara Garwood, aged 20, studied GCSE Art at school and then started to study Fine Art at Sixth Form. She found Sixth Form too similar to school so decided to move into employment to give herself time to consider what her next career move would be. Tara looked into art courses at local Colleges which offered specific art courses, such as Fine Art. However Tara wanted to join a course where she could experience different mediums and forms of art. The BTEC Art and Design course offered at South Worcestershire College was exactly what she wanted. “I liked the look of the BTEC Art and Design course because of the different areas covered on the course, such as textiles, graphics and 3D work. I came for an interview with the Course Manager, Celia, to find out more about the course. We went through some of my artwork which I had taken along to the interview and we spoke about the kind of design work that I enjoyed. On the course we have worked on a variety of briefs including designing a logo for corporate items such as business cards, t-shirts, shop fronts and name badges. At the 30

moment we are working on pieces for the end of year show.

My confidence to try out new things has really grown during my time on the course.

Aside from the variety of work that we do, College is very different from school. You are given guidance from the tutors rather than instruction, and you are able to work independently, managing your own workload. You can put in as much work as you feel you need to, for example I put extra work into the graphic design briefs purely because this is my favourite area and I want to reflect this in my grades.

When we all started on this course we were quite shy of showing our artwork to each other at the regular review sessions, but over time we have all become really close as a group and have gained confidence in showing our work and have learned to take constructive criticism on board. I am now coming to the end of my course and I have applied to study animation at the University of Worcester.”

“Throughout the course I have produced pieces of work which, at the start of the course, I would never have thought I would be able to do. I have really surprised myself with the work that I have produced. The College has been a brilliant first step for me towards my planned career in animation .”

Hear from an Access to Art Student

Anne Gibson, aged 50, worked in the nursing profession for 21 years. She took a career break while looking after her children and studied to become qualified in garden design. The course focussed heavily on plants, but Anne wanted to take her garden designs a step further and felt that a good sound knowledge of fine art would benefit her. “I went to an Open Day at the University of Worcester to discuss the BA in Fine Art course and it was suggested that, as a first step, I join the Access to Art course. They advised that the course would provide me with a good grounding in the history of art and also would give me an understanding of colour and design. With my children going to university, the opportunity to move on in my career by joining the Access to Art course was one I was very keen to take. I came to the College for an interview with the Head of the School of Art, Caroline Park, and she showed me work by previous students and told me about students who had also used the Access to Art course as a stepping stone to university. From the beginning I have found both the course and the other students on the course inspiring. There is a good mix of people and cultures and we all have different views and experiences which I really enjoy. 32

We are in College two days each week. We are given a fair amount of freedom within the set briefs. For example we had a sculpture brief and were taught about the properties of different materials such as clay, wood and stone, and then we could choose the medium in which we worked. We work quite closely as a group and are very encouraging to each other. Peer group assessments of our practical work are really beneficial because of the diverse mix of people that we have in the group. The course involves theory and research work and so gives students, who are preparing to move on to university, the opportunity to brush up on their study skills. All of the tutors on the course have been very helpful. If you ask for help they are there for you and any issues that arise are resolved quickly. When the time came for me to apply to the University of Worcester Caroline was very helpful. She gave me lots of invaluable advice when I was putting my personal statement together.”

“Thanks to the Access to Art course I now feel prepared for university.”

Must have... Beauty Therapy Qualifications Hear from a Beauty Therapy Student After leaving school Katie Ellis made the decision to carry on studying but was unsure about what she wanted to do. “I looked into Hairdressing and Beauty Therapy and chose to study Beauty Therapy because I felt that the qualification offered me a wider choice of career opportunities as well as the opportunity to specialise in areas such as holistic therapies.

I considered South Worcestershire College and another local College and noticed some differences, such as South Worcestershire College used high quality products in their salons; differences like this helped me to make my decision. From the beginning of the course we built up our confidence in working on clients by practicing our new skills on each other until we had perfected them; we then moved on to paying clients who booked into the salons. In this second year of the Level 3 course we have been studying electrical and holistic treatments – my favourite treatment to give a client is definitely an electrical facial – the client can see an improvement immediately which is very satisfying for me. The course does involve some in-depth study in areas such as Anatomy and Physiology so you need to have a genuine interest in the area of beauty therapy to succeed. I have now been offered a place to study the Foundation Degree in Spa Management at Derby University”

“To anyone who is thinking of becoming a Beauty Therapist I would recommend the College route; you are taught by experts and of course you come away with qualifications which are fully recognised in the industry.” 36

Must have... Construction Qualifications Hear from a Construction Student Jake Phillips, aged 18, joined the Construction course following a careers talk with a Connexions advisor. “I hadn’t done very well at school so this course offered me the opportunity to gain some new skills, despite not having very good qualifications. Coming to the College also meant that I could improve my Maths skills, which would help me to succeed on the Construction course. I originally liked the sound of the Construction course because it would provide me with a variety of basic skills in many areas such as carpentry, bricklaying, painting and tiling. Some friends of mine started the Heating and Plumbing here at the College last year and they recommended the College to me so this too helped me make the decision to join the College. Throughout the course I have really enjoyed working with the Course Manager Rob. He is still active in the building industry and so he has lots of relevant experience and knows what he’s talking about. Thanks to the course my confidence has grown in lots of ways. There is a bit of banter between the Construction students, as there would be on a building site, and joining in has certainly helped to improve my confidence. I have also gained more confidence with trying new tasks – I have even fitted a new bathroom sink at home!”

Hear from a Foundation Skills Programme Student Stacey Everill, aged 25, has been on the Foundation Skills Programme for six years. Stacey joined the College with her own personal goal of moving on to

The tutors at College are really lovely. Sarah, who is my Course Manager, has known me since I was seven years old through the Special Olympics so we know each other really well and get on very well too.

one of the College’s full-time courses. “I am involved in the Special Olympics (the world’s largest sports organisation for people with intellectual disabilities) and have been since I was seven years old. It was through my friends there that I found out about the Foundation Skills Programme at the College. I came, with a carer from my residential College, to an interview with one of the Course Managers, Sarah, and then started the Programme in the September. The Foundation Skills Programme is great because you can try out different subject areas. During my first four years on the Programme I did cookery and I have also done childcare for a year too. As well as trying out different subjects we also study ICT, English and Maths. We also have the opportunity to do some work experience during the Programme. I have done two placements – one in Oxfam, where my role was to keep the shop looking nice, and the other was in the Adventure Playground in Evesham.

54

Now that I have been on the Programme for six years I feel that I am ready to move onto a full-time course and I am applying to join the Office Professionals course. I will do a trial day to see if I like the course and then go for an interview. I have enjoyed being at South Worcestershire College, which is why I want to carry on studying here. All the staff are friendly and the surroundings are nice. The hub serves great food and there are TV screens around so you can watch the music channels during break times. You also have the freedom to go out to the local shops at lunchtimes. I am looking forward to joining the Office Professionals course and making new friends.”

“Thanks to the Programme I am definitely a more confident person to the one I was when I started at College.”

This course has been designed specifically for students who require a higher level of support both in the classroom and to access the College environment.

“I first found out about the College from the College’s website.

I thought that it would be good to leave school and have a change.

What is involved? A practical based programme tailored to support your independent living skills and where appropriate, your skills to help you obtain supported employment. There are many different modules you can work on including cookery, healthy eating, community participation, woodwork, IT and using public transport.

The Foundation Skills Programme appealed to me because it gave me the opportunity to try out different subjects, like catering and ICT and to also improve my Maths and English.

Maths and English are embedded throughout but if possible you are encouraged to work towards a qualification in Functional Skills Maths, English or ICT. How will I be studying? Small supported groups of approximately eight students. Maximum of 15 hours per week, either as three full days or up to four days (half day options available for Personal Progress groups).

I come into College three days each week. So far I have enjoyed the catering the most. We have made lemon cake, pizza and scones. I have enjoyed meeting different people at the College. The staff here are really friendly and I have made some good friends who I socialise with in the College’s hub. I am looking forward to being with my friends at College again this year and learning some new recipes!”

Hear from a Foundation Skills Programme Student

Ben Atkin, aged 19, started at Sixth Form but found that it wasn’t what he expected. He had a chat with a Connexions advisor who recommended that he took a look at what South Worcestershire College had to offer. “I applied to join the Foundation Skills Programme and spent the day at the College to find out what it was like. I found everyone to be friendly and welcoming and I liked the look of what the College had to offer. I was nervous when I first started the course but the Course Manager, Lesa, encouraged us all to join in a story telling game which quickly broke the ice. Once I got to know more people I felt more comfortable. I like the College because it is small, and also there are some local shops that I can walk to in my breaktime. If I arrive at College early in the morning I go to the hub, which is the College’s canteen. I spend time in there watching the music channels on the TV until my class starts. On the Foundation Skills Programme you get the opportunity to try out different subjects. First of all I did IT for a year and then during this past year I have been studying Health 56

and Social Care. I study Health and Social Care one day a week and during the rest of my time at College I study ICT, English, Maths and Personal and Social Development. I have enjoyed my time at College. The tutors are really easy to talk to and they encourage you to do well. Also if anyone has any problems they can go and see the tutor to talk about them. There is a good atmosphere within the College and because of that I have found it easier to make new friends. Since being on the course I have become much more confident with meeting new people. I have also found it to be a safe environment and that has also helped me to build my confidence. I am due to finish College very soon and will be moving away. Because I have been at the College for a while I will miss the tutors and the friends that I have made here, and I will also miss the routine. My goal now is to find fulltime employment in a job that I enjoy.”

“I come into College for two and a half days each week which means that I have free time during the week for my part-time job at a local supermarket.”

Hear from a Health and Social Care Student

Elly Bradley, aged 19, knew when she was at school that she wanted to train in Health and Social Care. She considered South Worcestershire College and one other local College. South Worcestershire College appealed to Elly because it was smaller and so had more of a personal feel to it. “I knew that I wanted to go into nursing so I decided to research the Level 2 Health and Social Care course to find out if it was the right route to take me into my chosen career. I applied to join the course and I met the Course Manager, Karen, at my interview. She went through the options available on completion of the Level 3 Health and Social Care course; one option was to progress on to university to study nursing. Other aspects of the course such as the work experience opportunities and the fact that the course had no end of year exam also appealed to me so I applied to join. My first placement was in a residential home – I got so much out of this placement and knew that I had made the right decision about choosing Health and Social Care as my vocational area. I progressed on to the Level 3 course which was run over two days a week so I had the 60

opportunity to work part-time as a nursery assistant. This was great for gaining more work experience and of course earning some money at the same time! Karen has been so helpful and friendly towards me throughout my time at College. If I asked her for help she always made me feel like I was her number one priority. If I was away from College and had a question I could email Karen and she always responded straight away so that I was not delayed in completing my assignments. I will come away from College with my Level 3 qualification, which will enable me to progress to university. I will also come away with many new abilities such as people skills, and how to be empathetic and understanding. I have also learned how to manage my time better which will be an invaluable skill for when I start university.”

“I have now been accepted onto the Paediatric Nursing Degree course. There was a lot of competition for this degree course, with around 800 applicants applying this year for 14 places, so I am so proud to have been offered a place.”

Hear from a Heating and Plumbing Student Joey Cull, aged 17, travels from Redditch each day to study on the Level 2 Domestic Heating and Plumbing course. “Whilst I was still at school I spoke to my Connexions advisor and told her that I wanted to train in heating and plumbing. She arranged for me to do some work experience with a plumber so that I could make a firm decision that this was the area in which I wanted to train. My mum researched courses in the local area and found the course at South Worcestershire College and I applied to join. The course involves about 70% theory work and this is broken up really well with practical lessons, such as learning how to fit bathrooms and boilers. The course is hard work, but because I want to learn as much as I can and gain as many new skills as I can then I am completely focussed on my work. I manage to get all my course work completed during my time at College and then spend time at home revising. I enjoy working with our Course Manager, Steve – he has worked in the industry for a long time and so knows his stuff and is definitely worth listening to! He also creates 64

a good atmosphere in class - we can have a laugh with him but he also expects us to work hard too. On completion of this course I will be looking for an employer to employ me as an apprentice. Then once I am fully trained I would like to work with my uncle who has his own Aga servicing business, with a view to one day becoming self-employed myself.”

“Joining the College from school was a big step. However I found the atmosphere is much more relaxed – my relationship with my tutor Steve is more like an employer/employee relationship than pupil and teacher.”

Hear from a Motor Vehicle Student Nick Carter, aged 27, was interested in motorbikes and cars from the age of 12. He bought his first car, a mini, and started teaching himself about cars. “When I left school I worked in retail, however I had always wanted to become qualified in Motor Vehicle Engineering. I started working on cars belonging to family and friends and enjoyed it so much that I built my own working garage, with an inspection pit, at home. I was determined to one day have a career in the motor trade.

At the age of 19 I began an Apprenticeship in a garage and my employer spoke about sending me to South Worcestershire College for my training as he said the College had a good reputation. However because of the distance that I had to travel to the garage every day I had to make the decision to leave the garage. My employer’s comment about the good reputation of the College stuck in my mind and prompted me to apply to join a full-time Level 1 Motor Vehicle course. I worked my way up through the Level 1 and Level 2 courses and am now completing the Level 3. I would recommend a College course to anyone who is interested in cars and wants to make a career out of their interest. You can teach yourself so much at home but to gain a full in-depth knowledge you need to be taught by experts. I have made the decision to carry on with my studies and will be starting a Foundation Degree in Motor Sport Engineering at the University of Bath. I feel very lucky to have this opportunity of further study which will help take me into a long and happy career in the motor vehicle trade. I was married with three children at an early age and didn’t think that the opportunity to train to a high level would be possible but the College has provided me with a huge stepping stone towards a career that I had only dreamt of in the past.”

“For me studying something that I have a genuine interest in , which will lead to a career that I will enjoy, has been one of the best things I have ever done.” 66

Motor Vehicle Apprentice’s story Oliver Prior left school with GCSEs in Technology, Maths, English, Business, Science and A Levels with B and C grades. With an interest in Technology he went to College to do a full-time course in Motor Vehicle Maintenance and Repair at Level 1, which he successfully completed. In January 2011 he started his Apprenticeship at Rybrook BMW in Worcester to continue his studies at Level 2. Mark Taplin, Workshop Controller at Rybrook confirmed that the knowledge that Oliver already had from doing his Level 1 was valuable in the decision to take Oliver as an apprentice.

Oliver Prior (centre) with Mark Taplin (right) and a BMW Technician

“It showed that Oliver had the interest in what he wanted to do and he was already committed to the industry.” Oliver worked with a different technician on a daily basis, observing processes to start with, getting more and more involved as time progressed. “He is now able to perform routine servicing and ‘Pre Delivery Inspections’ without supervision and is now at the stage where he is to be involved in a complete engine rebuild.” The BMW technicians identified at an early stage that Oliver was showing the required interest in the work, was always asking questions and wanted to get involved. “This is not a job where you can learn it all at College. It needs to be a combination of the knowledge and understanding gained applied to the practical experiences needed within the workplace.

68

From our point of view, the Apprenticeship gives us the flexibility that we need; Oliver spends one day per week at College and we have him for four days to train and work with.” Oliver’s progression on his Level 2 Apprenticeship since January this year has led to Rybrook discussing his progression onto the Level 3 Advanced Apprenticeship with the College and consideration for the BMW Technician Training in the near future. Oliver was quick to recognise that his Level 1 full-time course was a benefit to his employment as an apprentice at Rybrook BMW. It helped him settle in quickly and gain the trust of the technicians. Oliver stated that “the four days per week at work has allowed me to get real ‘hands on’ experiences and I have gained a great deal of knowledge relevant to the trade. Having worked with all 16 technicians, I have experienced many different ways and approaches to completing the tasks required following the BMW processes and procedures.”

Hear from an Office Professionals Student After leaving school Melissa Wilkins, aged 22, started her own business which involved teaching dance to children in local schools. After a year

I felt that this was the ideal time for me to start a College course. I was concerned about how I would cope financially on a College course but the Course Manager for the Office Professionals course, Hilary, advised me that because of the hours the course ran that I still had scope during the week to take on a part-time job. As I was still unemployed this meant I could claim Job Seeker’s Allowance. On the course we have covered word processing, spreadsheets, databases, presentations and desktop publishing. We have also worked on additional units such as formatting medical and legal papers and audio transcription. Hilary has been great during the course – she is a lovely lady. She is always flexible and 70

Our group has a wide range of ages in it and I think that is a good thing. It balances the class out. We have to be responsible for our own workload and we are also responsible for ensuring that we meet targets so that our work doesn’t build up. Because of this course I am now much more confident when using the computer and I am also happier meeting new people. Once I have finished my course I will be seeking employment in an office environment. My goal is to eventually secure an office based role in a school, and then combine that role with a dance teacher role at an after school club.”

“When I first started the course I had doubts that I would be able to do the course but I have really surprised myself with what I have achieved.”

Must have... Public Services Qualifications Hear from a Public Services Student James Jeacock, aged 17, had always enjoyed sport and practical activities so, when he left school, the decision to apply to join the Public Services course at South Worcestershire College was an easy one. “The tutors on the Public Services course have a lot of experience between them, having been in the police, the RAF and the army. Their lessons are based around real life scenarios that they have had to deal with in their careers. Knowing that they have each been in the services and experienced a whole variety of situations makes their lessons really interesting and gives you faith in what they saying. The Public Services course involves lots of practical activities which improve our team building and leadership skills. We went on a residential trip to Wales and during that time we were assessed on the skills that we displayed. I used to have a fear of heights and when we went on a rock climbing expedition it was the team support and motivation of other students and the tutors which got me over this fear. Fitness also plays a big part on the Public Services course. It is essential that you have good fitness levels to enter into any of the services. Our tutors have always encouraged us to improve our fitness levels. For me this has now become a good habit and I go to the gym at least three times a week. When I started the course I could do 11 press ups, now I can do 48 in two minutes which is one of the entry requirements for the army.

72

During the course we have also been on army and police careers days. During these visits we had the opportunity to find out about the different career paths that are available. Originally I wanted to go into the police force, but now that I am fully informed of the career options available I am choosing to apply to join the army.”

“The Public Services course has had a huge impact on me as a person compared to who I was when I joined the course. My Course Manager, James, has influenced me a lot. I have found him very inspiring and motivational .”

College. “I applied to join a full-time Sports course and had an interview with Lee Perry, the Course Manager. During the interview Lee told me about the Football Academy, which runs alongside the full-time Sport course which I had applied for. I decided to join the Football Academy alongside the full-time Sport Course because I love playing football. Being part of the Academy means attending two training sessions and a game each week. These Football Academy sessions are timetabled so that they fit around my full-time course. Our UEFA coach Sammy is great to work with. He is very direct and will tell you if you are doing something right or wrong. Our relationship with Sammy is more like a working relationship that a manager of a professional team would have with his players. Sammy has a good reputation in 76

At every game that we play we are expected to put 100% effort in. On the pitch it feels great to be part of a team which is completely committed to the match. As well as the football skills the Football Academy teaches you discipline and it also motivates you to keep fit so that you succeed.”

“I would like to focus my career on football . On completion of my course I may have the opportunity to move into coaching at local schools. Also my name has been forwarded by Sammy to join a local club.”

Hear from a Travel and Tourism Student

Sarah Cope, aged 21, studied the Level 3 Travel and Tourism course and has since been working for Cotswold Conference Centre at Farncombe

tourism industry, such as representatives from a cruise company and an airline to share their knowledge and experiences with us. This all helped to ensure that we had a rounded knowledge of the industry.

Estate near Broadway in Worcestershire. This is an award-winning venue offering meeting, training and teambuilding facilities for corporate clients during the week and a programme of leisure learning at weekends. When Sarah left school she helped her parents to manage a pub. She began researching courses that were on offer locally and found out about the Travel and Tourism course on offer at South Worcestershire College. “I applied for the Travel and Tourism course and met the Course Manager, Kat, at my interview. It soon became obvious to me that this would be the perfect course for me because I would come away with a variety of skills, such as event management and customer service. From the very beginning of the course I found the topics covered interesting. We looked, in depth at subject areas such as the ‘behind the scenes’ organisation of tourist attractions and SWOT analysis. Kat invited speakers in from the travel and 78

Half way through the course it was discovered that I had dyslexia. This answered a lot of questions for me about why I sometimes struggled with my work. Following the diagnosis, Kat worked really closely with me to ensure my success on the course. On completion of the course I started a fulltime job in a local travel agents. From there I decided to progress in my career and applied for a vacancy at Farncombe Estate for a Front of House Receptionist. During the interview for the job I was able to talk about the many skills that I had taken from my College course, particularly my customer service, marketing and event management skills. Kat’s goal is to prepare all of her students for working life – I think that she did this for me. Thanks to Kat I now have much more drive and ambition, so much so that I am now studying for a Business Degree.”

“Studying the Level 3 Travel and Tourism course undoubtedly help me to secure my new position .”
