Useful Information Course Fees/Concessions: The Government, through the Young People’s Learning Agency and the Skills Funding Agency, makes funding available for some learners to cover the tuition costs of their programme (for example, those in receipt of certain benefits). The Secretary of State does not expect tuition fees to be charged to full-time or part-time 16-18 year old students on courses marked with an * in this Course Guide). Full details on eligibility can be found at www.ypla.gov.uk or at www.skillsfundingagency.bis.gov.uk or contact the College’s Learner Services. Concessions may be available on courses marked with a R in this Guide. If you qualify for tuition fee remission, a copy of the evidence showing that you fall within the approved remission categories must be obtained and attached to your learning agreement in order that the appropriate tuition fee remission may be claimed by us from the relevant agency. There may still be examination and/or material fees to pay - these are NOT subject to a reduction. Please contact Learner Services for further details or if you have any queries. Anyone applying for a full-time or part-time course and who will be in receipt of funding must supply one of the following forms of ID: Relationship with school, Passport, Driving Licence, ID Card or other form of national identification, National Insurance card, Certificate of Entitlement to Funding, Bank/Credit/Debit card. Employer Financing: We are able to invoice employers on production of a completed Fee Authorised Form FA1 (or FA2 form for companies who are booking more than one employee onto a course) available from Learner Services, together with completed enrolment forms for each employee. Payment by employers can also be made by company cheque or credit card together with the forms as above. Refunds: Refunds will not be made to students who, having enrolled, find the course unsuitable or are unable to attend, as these matters should be determined prior to enrolling. There will be no refunds for withdrawal from a one term course, regardless of circumstance. Any refund that is granted due to exceptional circumstances will be subject to a standard retention fee of 20% of the total course fee. Information and a Refund Application Form can be obtained from Learner Services. Additional Fees (marked E, R or C in this Course Guide): Some examination and certification fees have been included in the prices listed and must be paid when enrolling, however exam fees on some courses are extra and are payable when entering or registering for an exam. For further information the College Examination Officers can be contacted at Evesham on (01386) 712604 or at Malvern on (01684) 584552. Materials and Equipment (marked M in this Course Guide): Some courses require the use of specialist materials or equipment which may incur additional costs. You will be advised of this when you enrol or you can refer to the course information leaflet to confirm these details. Students are advised not to purchase additional items until they are sure that the class will be running. Attendance and Withdrawals: Course subsidies to the College are withdrawn if a student fails to attend. The College will assume you have left a course if you fail to attend for 4 consecutive weeks. At that point your place may be allocated to another student. If you know you may be absent but wish to continue your attendance at a later date, or if you wish to leave your course, please inform the Course Tutor in writing. Course Cancellations: Minimum student numbers are required for courses to run. The College reserves the right to cancel or combine a course due to insufficient recruitment and will aim to give a minimum of 3 days' notice. Students may be offered the opportunity to transfer to a similar course which may be at a different time or day, or request a refund. The College very much regrets having to cancel courses at short notice - please help us to avoid this by enrolling no later than 7 days before the start of your chosen course. Full details and information on all of the above can be obtained from Learner Services. General information leaflets on issues such as Course Fees and Financial Assistance are available from Learner Services. Learner Support Funds: Any student experiencing financial difficulties can apply for means-tested Learner Support Funds to help towards the cost of course related expenses such as registered childcare, travel, books, exams and equipment. An introduction to

Mosaic Work

The Summer term sees the launch of a new Introduction to Mosaic class at the Evesham Campus.

Tutor, Karen Wones, a Mosaic Artist who works locally, teaches mosaic work in art centres and schools and also offers one-to-one training in her studio. When creating her own work Karen specialises in converting corporate emblems and logos into a mosaic form. Recently, a lot of her work has revolved around the ‘Art for Health’ project called Art Lift. Gloucester Rugby Club boasts a piece of Karen’s work which is hung in the main reception of the new C & G stand. The one metre square piece of work took approximately 60 hours to complete, using Venetian glass and ceramic tiles. Karen says “It was very exciting to be given the commission for the Club. It was definitely a challenge and it is very satisfying to see my work in situ”. Karen also recently worked on a piece of mosaic that was sent off to Australia. This has formed part of an Australian plants and animals mural which has been constructed as a tribute to the late Steve Irwin, the Crocodile Hunter. The Introduction to Mosaic course will be running on Saturday 19th May 2012, from 10am - 4pm at the Evesham Campus, see page 8 for further details. Mosaics classes are also available at the Malvern Campus with tutor Victoria Harrison, whose work is featured on the Malvern Youth Centre building, see page 7 for course details.

The Cookery for Men course, run by former Russells of Broadway Pastry Chef Sarah Mackins is becoming increasingly popular with many students choosing to enrol on follow up courses.

One student who completed last term’s Cookery for Men course, and who is joining Sarah again this term is retired IT Consultant Robin Wilson.

“When I retired a friend and I decided to join the course so that we could learn some new skills and have some fun at the same time.

Some of the men on the course had some basic cookery knowledge, whereas others have never cooked before so Sarah took us right back to basics.

We have put together some down-to-earth dishes which are perfect for midweek meals such as sausage casserole, lasagne, fish cakes and a chicken casserole dish. Sarah chose recipes which contained common ingredients which everyone already had at home so there was never any need to buy unusual

COOKING UP A STORM

ingredients that you would never use again.

Because of Sarah’s past experience she has plenty of handy hints to pass on during the class. Her style of teaching (and her patience!) makes for a very relaxing atmosphere within the class and there is always plenty of banter between the students!

I would highly recommend this course to any man who would like to start cooking but is apprehensive about entering the kitchen.”

Art Courses at Evesham Art courses at the Evesham Campus remain ever popular, with many students returning term after term to improve their drawing and painting skills. Part-time courses are offered in the daytime, in the evening and at outreach centres in the surrounding areas. Each of the tutors has a different style of teaching and their own preferred mediums. Meet the four artists who teach at the Evesham Campus:

Annabel Carey

Peter Hodge

Annabel Carey began exhibiting professionally in 1984, and has since been invited to take part in numerous exhibitions at galleries and festivals, working with great success in oils, acrylic and watercolour.

Peter was born in the Cotswold village of Snowshill in 1949. He studied at Gloucester College of Art and Design, followed by several years training as a picture restorer before settling into a career painting and designing fine porcelain. Renowned for his watercolour paintings he continues to work in other areas of art, and his paintings and designs have been widely reproduced as greeting cards and limited edition prints, whilst his originals hang in collections throughout the world.

Having drawn and painted from a very early age, it was whilst at University that Annabel became interested in batik and used it there in textile design, later developing this traditional technique and applying it to landscape and architecture, creating pictures. For a number of years she worked on a series of acrylic paintings exploring psychological landscapes. Annabel’s classes reflect this variety of mediums and her students have the opportunity to work with many including acrylics, chalk and even crayons. There are places on some of Annabel’s classes for beginners, whilst other courses offer help and advice on techniques for the more advanced student. These are daytime courses on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays.

Sue Barnes Sue joined the College last year and has been teaching at Broad Campden.

His classes are held on Monday mornings and afternoons at the Evesham Campus and students will mainly learn watercolour techniques and drawing.

Jonathan Taylor Jonathan was born in the West Midlands in 1962. He studied in Worcester and Leeds before turning professional in 1988. He has exhibited for many years in galleries in Surrey, Worcestershire, Herefordshire and Swansea as well as the Mall galleries in London.
