Anyone who is fit and able to walk, and can do mild stretches is capable of doing this course. It is instead for those who wish to live more fully in their own bodies and to learn to maintain a still place within themselves even in stressful situations. Although the overall curriculum of Tai Chi is extensive, this course will begin with simplified instruction in the following:  The Hand Form (Tao Chuan): this is a series of set out moves performed in a flowing manner. The sequence and style of the moves is as set out by practical Tai Chi Chuan International. The hand form is the aspect of Tai Chi that most people know about and can be used for exercise, meditation and as a catalogue of martial arts moves.  Tui Shou: these are partnered exercises which are used to refresh and revitalise particular parts and systems of the body as well as to strengthen and deepen breathing.  Zhan Zhuang: these are standing meditations. Five are taught in the course, each related to the five systems within the body according to Chinese medicine. In a manner similar to acupuncture, they are designed to strengthen and open the meridians of the organs, which relate to those systems. The two basic workbooks are “The Way of Energy” by Master Lam Kam Chuen and “Complete Tai Chi Chuan” by Dan Docherty who is the course tutor’s own teacher. There are no formal assessments; the students’ performance is measured in terms of ten criteria, which include: correct posture, distinguishing yin and yang, smooth transition, aesthetic appearance etc. You will achieve improved health, co-ordination, flexibility and strength. You will have been introduced to an art, which requires no equipment, can be taken anywhere and has no ceiling, thereby providing an endless source of interest and opportunities for association with fellow Tai Chi-ists. The curriculum of Tai Chi Chuan is large and this course is only an introduction. There are a number of Tai Chi classes locally, both in the same style and in related styles, through which students can extend their knowledge and skills and meet other people who are interested in the art.

Singing for Beginners

M

Course tutor: Carol Green For all those who would love to sing, but are nervous of joining a choir. If you think that you can’t sing, or you need some reassurance and guidance then the friendly and safe environment of this short course will support you whilst you explore your own voice. Students will be guided in how to make the best of your voice and learn some simple songs. You will also learn how to follow written music. Carol Green is an experienced choral educator and conductor who founded the Sing for Pleasure class 1986. She teaches in a number of County schools and works as an advisory teacher for the Voices Foundation. She runs vocal workshops for the Sing for Pleasure and for the National Federation of Music Societies. In addition to this she conducts two other local choirs, The Hills Singers, and Malvern Young Voices.

Sing for Pleasure

M

Course tutor: Carol Green Sing for Pleasure aims to bring people of all ages and musical experience together to enjoy singing in a relaxed and friendly atmosphere. The choice of materials to be sung will be very broad with anything ranging from comic songs and easy rounds to madrigals and contemporary music. To be able to read music would be a help but is not by any means essential. Support is given to those who do not read music to enable them to follow. The year falls into a pattern, beginning in September with easy repertoire and leading into seasonal music from the middle of term. This would be the best term for a novice to begin. The spring term is the most serious and ‘challenging’ when usually one large work or two smaller ones from the choral repertoire are tackled. The summer term includes a wide range of short pieces to suit all tastes. Each term can be self contained and usually ends with a concert (optional), but sometimes the music is carried forwards from one term to another so the most benefit will be gained by staying a full year. Many members enrol year after year. Visit www.malvernsfpchoir.org for further information. Carol Green is an experienced choral educator and conductor who founded this class in 1986. She teaches in a number of County schools and works as an advisory teacher for the Voices Foundation. She runs vocal workshops for the Sing for Pleasure and for the National Federation of Music Societies. In addition to this group she conducts two other local choirs, The Hills Singers and Malvern Young Voices.

Vocaltonic

Singing is a fabulous form of expression and is wonderfully good for your health! Sue has worked with young students and adults alike in both music and drama and she specialises in building confidence whilst having fun. Sailing RYA ICC CENVI Euro Regs for Inland Waterways

E

Unlike in the UK, if you are planning to spend your holiday cruising in Europe, you are likely to need a certificate. The most common requirement is the International Certificate of Competence (ICC). You can obtain this by proving your competence to skipper a boat, either by holding an RYA practical certificate (Day Skipper or above), or by passing an ICC assessment. The ICC assessment checks your boat handling skills and knowledge of the IPRCS (collision regulations), safety, pilotage and navigation. We offer training leading up to this assessment, tailored to your own needs. If you want your ICC to be valid for use on European inland waterways you will also need to take the CEVNI test to check your knowledge of the inland waterways' regulations.

RYA Marine VHF DSC Short Range Certificate

E

Marine VHF radio usage has changed in the last 10 years and really everyone who goes to sea should be capable of operating a VHF radio effectively. It is also a legal requirement that to use a VHF set you must hold or be under the supervision of someone holding a VHF licence. The certificate that you will be awarded upon successfully passing the course is the Short Range Certificate, SRC, or short range radio license. The VHF Radio course covers all aspects of using a VHF radio correctly including the new generation of radios fitted with Digital Selective Calling, DSC, for use within the Global Maritime Distress and Safety System.

RYA Coastal Skipper Yachtmaster (offshore) Shorebased Course

E

The course is intended to extend the knowledge of small boat sailors with basic experience of skippering their vessels to enable them to undertake longer passages both by day and night. This is an advanced course in navigation and meteorology for candidates for the RYA Coastal Skipper and Yachtmaster Offshore Certificates, which are obtained after practical courses and examination. The syllabus makes some provision for the revision of subjects in the Day Skipper Course. However, students who have not acquired the necessary knowledge are unlikely to be able to assimilate all the subjects covered in this advanced course in the time available. The assumed level of knowledge before starting this course is the Day Skipper Shorebased Course and students will undertake a revision/refresher test during the first session. The course is applicable for skippers on both sailing and motor cruisers. The course will cover magnetic compasses, variation and deviation; compass calibration; position lines, transits, back bearings and clearing bearings; dead reckoning, estimated position and course to steer; use of Waypoints; radar fixes; position-fixing area of uncertainty; tidal heights and streams; interpolation, soundings and depth; use of electronic charts and chart plotters; pilotage, buoyage, lights, chart symbols, harbour regulations and control signals; VHF radio and distress signals; navigational aids, logs, echo sounders and GPS; meteorology, synoptic charts, frontal systems, sea breezes, fog, wind strength and sea state. The course also covers anchoring, anchor types and anchoring techniques; regulations for the avoidance of collisions at sea; safety; navigation in restricted visibility; passage planning and marine environment. Continuous assessment by written exercises prepared by the RYA and three examinations: Chartwork, Meteorology and Collision Regulations (80% pass mark required in this examination). On satisfactory completion of the course you will have the theoretical knowledge but not necessarily the practical experience to skipper a yacht or motor cruiser by day and night up to 60 NM a safe haven. If you have not already done so, obtain the necessary practical experience (15 days at sea, 300nm and 8 night hours) and undertake the Coastal Skipper Practical Course at an RYA Sailing School. Please note in addition to the cost of the course, as shown in the prospectus, an additional amount is required for the provision of course materials including plotting instruments. Details of these will be available from your tutor at the commencement of the course.

RYA Yachtmaster (Ocean) Shorebased Course

E

The course is intended primarily for students who intend to participate in global cruising using the heavenly bodies as a back up to their existing electronic position fixing system and is a natural progression from the Yachtmaster (Offshore) theoretical shorebased course. However the acquisition of a Yachtmaster (Offshore) certificate, or any other navigational qualification is not a requirement for participation in the course. Indeed many people take it simply from a point of interest, because they find the subject fascinating and wish to learn more about it. In the distant past Astro navigation was a complicated subject, requiring a thorough understanding of spherical trigonometry, but today it is greatly simplified requiring only the ability to interpret sets of tables together with simple arithmetic such as addition multiplication, division and subtraction. Whilst a sextant is essential when applying the method at sea, possession of such an instrument is not required for the shorebased course. Your only requirement will be use of a simple scientific calculator. The course is applicable to both sailing and motor cruisers. The course will cover: the earth and the celestial sphere; the PZX triangle; the sextant; measurement of time; meridian altitudes; sun sights; planet sights; star sight planning and star sights; the pole star; moon sights; compass checking; satellite navigation systems; great circle sailing; world weather and passage planning. Continuous assessment by written exercises prepared by the RYA and a final examination. On satisfactory completion of the course you will have the theoretical knowledge required to skipper a sailing or motor cruiser anywhere in the world. You could go on to participate in the Diesel engine or Radiotelephony shorebased course.

This course is a comprehensive introduction to chart-work, navigation, meteorology and the basics of seamanship for competent crew and helmsmen. You will find this course applicable to both sailing and motor cruisers. The course will cover: nautical terms, parts of a boat and general terminology; rope work, properties of ropes, common knots and ability to make these knots; rope handling; knowledge and use of different types of anchors; knowledge of safety procedures and use of safety equipment; internal regulations for preventing collisions at sea; navigational charts and publications, as well as the use of electronic charts and chart plotters. You will be continuously assessed by written exercises prepared by the RYA and a final examination. On satisfactory completion of the course you will have the theoretical knowledge required to skipper a sailing or motor cruiser anywhere in the world. To further your knowledge you could participate in the diesel engine course.
