Accounts and Bookkeeping Basic Accounts for the Self-employed

This course will focus on recording important cash flow information using Excel spreadsheets. It will highlight the importance of keeping accurate and up to date records to enable you to monitor company progress, record transactions, and keep an accurate record of income and expenditure. During the course you will learn how to set up a simple system to encourage the recording of income, expenditure and expenses on a regular basis. The course is ideal for sole traders who will learn what is needed to “self certify” or for a small business where figures can be input for an accountant.

OCR Bookkeeping

This course is for those who are new to the skills and knowledge of double entry bookkeeping and who wish to develop a understanding of the underlying principles and practices. It is suitable for those who are employed in bookkeeping roles and those who would like employment in this area. SAGE Beginners – C & G Level 1

The aim of this qualification is to enable learners to operate SAGE computerised accounts software and process routine accounting tasks including creating accounts for customers and suppliers, recording transactions such as invoices, credit notes, receipts and payments and being able to produce accounting reports. SAGE Beginners – C & G Level 2

The aim of this course is to enable learners to operate computerised accounts software to carry out routine accounting tasks. These will include:    

Being able to create accounts Process accounting information in respect of the sales and purchase ledger Understanding how to use batch control sheets Being able to produce reports such as trial balance, customer activity reports and supplier detail reports

Apprenticeships Apprenticeships are an excellent way of gaining nationally recognised qualifications alongside workplace experience. As an apprentice you earn as you learn, gaining hands-on, practical skills and gaining qualifications which are specific to the industry/sector you are working in. Apprenticeships are work-based and therefore you must have a contract of employment and work a minimum of 30 hours per week, in a role which is appropriate for the area and the level you wish to study. You will also be required to attend workshops or regular college based sessions as part of your apprenticeship. To achieve an apprenticeship, candidates must complete:   

A vocational programme in their chosen area of study Technical Certificate in their chosen area of study(where applicable) Key/functional skills in English and Maths (and IT for some apprenticeship programmes)

Assessment for these programmes includes a variety of written and practical tasks including workplace observation, a portfolio of evidence, learning dairies or logs, question and answer sessions, formal exams. The exact assessment will vary depending on the area of study. You will have a set time in which to complete your apprenticeship, which will vary depending on the area of study – this can range from twelve months to two years. Apprenticeships are available to anyone of any age however for anyone over the age of 19, employer fees will apply, this is dependent on current funding arrangements. Apprenticeships are available in following areas:

Health and Social Care – Level 2 Apprenticeship Aimed at individuals working in or wanting to gain employment in health and social care. Candidates will develop the knowledge and skills required and achieve a Level 2 apprenticeship through the successful completion of:   

Diploma in Health & Social Care (Level 2) Certificate in preparing to work in adult social care (Level 2) Functional skills in English & Maths

Health and Social Care – Level 3 Advanced Apprenticeship Aimed at those working in health and social care usually in a more senior position or those in a suitable role progressing from the Level 2 apprenticeship. Candidates will develop the knowledge and skills required and achieve a Level 3 advanced apprenticeship through the successful completion of:   

Diploma in Health & Social Care (Level 3) Certificate in preparing to work in adult social care (Level 3) Functional skills in English & Maths

Children and Young People’s Workforce – Level 2 Apprenticeship Designed for those working in or wanting to gain employment in the Children and Young People’s Workforce sector. Candidates will develop knowledge and skills and achieve a Level 2 apprenticeship through the successful completion of:    

Accountancy (AAT) – Level 2 Apprenticeship and Level 3 Advanced Apprenticeship This programme is aimed at those who are working in an accountancy environment and wish to gain a recognised accountancy qualification to support their work experience. Candidates with a good standard of Maths and English, who have just commenced employment in an accountancy setting, can start at Level 2. Candidates who have worked in an accounting environment for some time and have at least 5 GCSE’s grades A-C (including Maths and English), and an excellent working knowledge of accounting and double entry, can start at Level 3. On successful completion of a Level 2 apprenticeship candidates will achieve a Level 2 Certificate in Accounting. Candidates successfully completing the Level 3 advanced apprenticeship will achieve a Level 3 Diploma in Accounting. Both are nationally recognised accounting qualifications.

Business and Administration – Level 2 Apprenticeship Aimed at individuals just starting a career in administration or those wanting to gain employment in an administration. Candidates will develop knowledge and skills and achieve a level 2 apprenticeship through the successful completion of:   

Certificate in Business & Administration (Level 2) Functional/key skills in Maths, English and IT Certificate in Principles of Business & Administration (Level 2)

Business and Administration – Level 3 Advanced Apprenticeship Aimed at individuals who have experience in an administrative role and whose duties involve responsibility and autonomy. Progression from the Level 2 apprenticeship may be available for candidates who are in a suitable administrative role. Candidates will develop knowledge and skills and achieve a Level 3 advanced apprenticeship through the successful completion of:   

Management – Level 3 Advanced Apprenticeship The Level 3 Advanced Apprenticeship aims to develop the full range of skills, knowledge and interpersonal skills required in a management role. This programme is ideally suited to those who have recently moved into a management role or for those in a management role who want to develop their skills and knowledge. At level 3 candidates will develop knowledge and skills required and achieve a level 3 advanced apprenticeship through the successful completion of:   

Certificate in Management (NVQ) (Level 3) (focusing on the practical management skills and application of theories and principles) Certificate in Management (Level 3) (to develop the theory and knowledge of management, principles and practice) Functional/key skills in English, Maths and IT

NVQs NVQs enable individuals to gain nationally recognised qualifications which are specific to the industry sector they are working in and enable them to demonstrate their occupational competence for the work they are doing. Individuals wanting to undertake an NVQ programme must be working in a role which is appropriate for the programme and level they wish to study, and may be required to complete an audit of work-based activities and related knowledge prior to commencement. In order to achieve an NVQ candidates are required to build a portfolio of evidence which meets the criteria set down by the awarding body which demonstrates their competence and reflects their work-based activities. Portfolio assessment is in addition to a series of work-based assessments undertaken by an assessor allocated to the candidate. NVQ programmes are best suited to individuals who cannot commit to regular College attendance and who want to gain a qualification which reflects their current level of work performance. These are, however, time consuming and require motivation and determination to achieve within an allocated 12 – 18 month timescale. They do offer increased flexibility as assessments and tutorials with assessors can be arranged at mutually convenient times. NVQ’s are available in the following areas at the following levels:

NVQ Management – Levels 3, 5,7 •

The Level 3 NVQ Certificate in Management is aimed at first line managers with a range of responsibilities including allocating work to team members/colleagues/contractors, achieving specific results, managing financial and physical resources and with some degree of decision making. The qualification will give candidates the opportunity to develop their management performance and work more effectively, helping to enhance career progression. The Level 5 NVQ Diploma in Management is designed for middle managers with a wide span of control and accountability for performance. Candidates at this level should have responsibility for determining resource allocation and operational responsibility within their department or organisation. The Level 7 NVQ Diploma in Management is designed for senior managers with a high degree of autonomy for deploying resources and achieving strategic goals. The qualification allows candidates to develop their strategic management skills, providing leadership and coaching to other managers while also focusing on organisational performance and strategy.

NVQ Team Leading – Level 2

Association of Accounting Technicians – AAT All AAT programmes offered are designed to provide a recognised qualification to those who work in or how to gain employment in an accounting environment, and can lead to professional membership of the Association of Accounting Technicians. Courses are available at levels 2, 3 and 4, with the level 4 course providing the skills and knowledge required to fulfil an accounting technician role. All AAT courses require the student to register with the AAT as a student member, for which a fee is payable. All AAT courses commence in the Autumn Term.

AAT Level 2 Certificate in Accounting (formerly AAT Foundation)

AAT Fast Track – Level 2 Certificate and Level 3 Diploma (in one year)

A full time course that allows you to fast track through the qualification to Level 3 in one year. It will take you from the recording of day to day accounting transactions through to production of profit and loss accounts and balance sheets. In addition, you will study computerised accounts, spreadsheets, VAT, cash management and costing. The course is assessed through on-line exams.

Management & Administration Certificate in Administration (Business Professional)

The OCR Level 2 Certificate in Administration (Business Professional) is suitable for those who wish to develop knowledge, understanding and skills in a range of key administrative functions and activities. It is suitable for those who will have to work independently in an administrative job role. These qualifications are suitable for learners of all ages, both pre-16 and post-16. This course is available as an evening course, however, there may be an opportunity to infill onto a full-time programme during the day.

Certificate in Medical Terminology (City and Guilds)

The course is for people who are working in a healthcare environment either in General Practice or a hospital who are required to have a good knowledge of medical terminology. The course covers the human body, the systems within the body, the main organs within the body and their function, how to break down medical words by learning root words, prefixes and suffixes which give root words meaning, departments within hospitals and their function and abbreviations used by medical staff. The course is assessed by examination and successful candidates will be awarded a City and Guilds Certificate in Medical Terminology.

Diploma in Primary Care Management – Level 5

The course is aimed at Practice Managers working in a General Practice, deputy/trainee Practice Managers, hospital staff wishing to further their career in management or anyone wishing to obtain a management qualification who may be working in the Health Service. The course covers the following modules: • Manage ethics and medic legal requirements • Manage staff • Manage processes and patient services • Manage healthcare resources • Manage data and communication in a healthcare setting Subjects covered include employment law, health and safety, personnel management, interviewing and employing staff, quality management, maintaining and improving quality, the new contract for General Practitioners and Dentists, finance, accounting, PAYE, managing data and communication in a healthcare setting Candidates will complete assessments for each of the 5 modules; these are assessed by course tutors and moderated by the awarding body AMSPAR. Candidates will also be required to produce a business project which is assessed externally by the awarding body. Successful candidates will be awarded the AMSPAR Diploma in Primary Care Management Level 5.

ILM Level 2 Award/Certificate in Effective Team Member Skills

The ILM Level 2 Award and Certificate in Effective Team Member Skills have been designed to provide practicing team members and potential team leaders with the knowledge and skills that will assist their personal development and enable them to become more effective in their workplace. The Award The Award is a concise qualification designed to give learners a basic knowledge of the various roles, functions and responsibilities within a team and the limits of their authority and accountability. The mandatory unit ‘Developing yourself as an effective team member’ is a good starting point for those who are new to their roles, or for aspiring leaders who wish to gain a solid understanding of team dynamics and effective leadership. ILM Level 3 Certificate in Effective Management

This programme aims to provide practising managers or those hoping to move into management with a broad knowledge of a range of management topics and concepts to support them in their development as an effective manager. It requires 62 hours of delivery which is usually delivered one evening per week. This course offers progression from the Award in Effective Management providing candidates have the required level of skills and experience. Certificate in Business Administration

This 30 week programme is aimed at those wishing to achieve a qualification in clerical, office, secretarial and administrative skills. It is an alternative to an NVQ. It is suitable for those already in a work environment who wish to upgrade their skills and achieve a qualification or those wanting to update their skills for today’s modern office environment.

Level 2 Certificate in Customer Service

The Customer Service qualification is appropriate to all candidates whatever their job role or organisation. It will provide candidates with the skills required to deliver efficient and reliable customer service and how to communicate effectively with different customers.

Letter and Report Writing for Small Businesses

E

This course will teach you some basic skills that will help you run a small business. Using Word, PowerPoint and Publisher you will learn from a selection of the following skills:      

How to set out and write a professional letter Setting out an invoice Putting together a simple report to include headings, numbering pages etc. Producing a simple flyer Setting up a label Setting up a professional email address

It is expected that you have some basic computer skills in order to undertake the course.

Updating your CV

E

On this one day course you will learn some of the techniques that will help you with preparing and presenting your CV. You will use Word 2007 for this purpose, so you will need to be able to find your way around a computer, including using a mouse. You should also be able to save and print your completed document. Advice will be given on:    

Teaching Preparing to Teach in the Lifelong Learning Sector (PTLLS)

This unique award aims to address current Government strategy and initiatives relating to teaching and training in state-funded organisations. It is a ten week course which aims to develop skills and awareness in those wanting employment in the Lifelong Learning Sector. Certificate in Teaching in the Lifelong Learning Sector (CTLLS)

In order to deliver a qualified workforce by 2010 as outlined in ‘Success for All’ Government targets, the teaching qualifications for new teachers in the Lifelong Learning Sector have been revised. After gaining the Preparing to Teach in the Lifelong Learning Sector (PTLLS) award it is expected that teachers will become either a Full Teacher or an Associate Teacher depending upon the role they have in their institution. The CTLLS qualification is for teachers who are supported in their teaching role and for whom teaching is not their main role. The course requires that you have at least 30 hours teaching during the duration of the course and that you will be observed teaching 3 times during that time. After successful completion of the course you will be able to register with the Institute for Learning and become a Licensed Practitioner (ATLS).
