General Education

GCSE English

E

This course is for those who wish to improve their writing skills, be more confident in speaking and gain a qualification in English. The course will include:    

Personal and imaginative writing. A study of the media. A study of novels, plays and poems. Spelling, punctuation and grammar. How to communicate effectively in speech and writing.

Students will be assessed by both coursework and written examination at the end of the course, and will achieve GCSE English. Students then have the opportunity to go on to study A Level English or other GCSEs.

GCSE Maths

E

The course is designed for anyone who wishes to gain a GCSE in Maths. However, it is recommended that prospective students should have a basic knowledge of Maths prior to starting the course. The course follows the AQA Linear A Maths GCSE syllabus. This is an intensive course covering the whole syllabus in less than 1 year and therefore prospective students should be aware of the commitment necessary to obtain the qualification. Students may obtain qualifications at either the FOUNDATION or the HIGHER level. However, only students who have recent experience of GCSE Maths will be allowed to enter at the HIGHER level. It is recommended that the levels will be taught separately. The syllabus comprises Number and Algebra; Shape, space and measures; and Handling Data The course is assessed through 2 pieces of coursework completed in the Spring term, and two end of term exams in May/June. It is possible to achieve grades of A* - C at the HIGHER level and grades C - E at FOUNDATION Level.

Routes to Higher Education Access to Higher Education Diploma ‘Combined Studies’ (Day)

This one-year diploma course has been designed specifically for adults who wish to enter Higher Education via a route more suited to their needs than those of the traditional A Level and BTEC programmes. The Access course is designed to give students a full understanding of the opportunities available to them in Higher Education, and the academic, career and personal implications attached to them. The course aims to develop in students the confidence, autonomy and self-awareness needed to participate in Diploma and Degree level work. It offers a credit-based course that students can study at a pace that suits their needs. It provides a foundation of knowledge and awareness in a range of subjects, enabling students to develop critical and independent thinking, providing a sound basis for further study. Students design their programme by choosing 3 subjects to study from the following:   

Biology Psychology Literary Studies Sociology

The core programme includes Study Skills, Basic Numeracy and Word Processing which allows the students to develop the necessary skills to enable them to study independently and at the same time gives practise in a range of learning techniques necessary for successful study in Higher Education. Applicants will need to have literacy at Level 2. Numeracy at Level 2 is desirable though not a requirement for the Access Diploma, however it may be required to join some Higher Education courses (students should note that to be accepted onto a B.Ed (Teaching Degree) students must have GCSE Maths, English and Science equivalent). For entry into Social Work students are required to hold GCSE Maths and to be accepted on to a Nursing degree, GCSE Maths or equivalent or the ability to pass the Maths entrance exam is necessary. Successful completion of the course leads to a nationally recognised Access to Higher Education Diploma, which is accredited through the Open College Network. The Access course is preparation for a wide range of degree and diploma courses, which include Humanities, Social Science, Environmental Sciences, Nursing, Physiotherapy, Social Work and related Caring Professions and Teaching. Teaching and Assessing Preparing to Teach in the Lifelong Learning Sector (PTLLS)

This introductory award provides a stepping stone to teaching in the lifelong learning sector. This unique award aims to address current government strategy and initiatives relating to teaching and training in state-funded organisations. It is a ten week course which aims to develop skills and awareness in those wanting employment in the lifelong learning sector. It is considered to be the passport to being employed in any teaching capacity. The course covers the basics of teaching in continuing adult education and includes how to plan sessions, how to motivate learners and how to use a variety of assessment methods. All applicants for this course are required to have Level 2 qualifications in Maths and English (or equivalent). Certificate in Teaching in the Lifelong Learning Sector (CTLLS)

After gaining the Preparing to Teach in the Lifelong Learning Sector (PTLLS) Award it is expected that teachers will become either a Full Teacher or an Associate Teacher depending upon the role they have in their institution. The CTLLS qualification is for teachers who are supported in their teaching role and for whom teaching is not their main role. The course requires that you have at least 30 hours teaching during the duration of the course and that you will be observed teaching 3 times during that time. After successful completion of the course you will be able to register with the Institute for Learning and become a Licensed Practitioner (ATLS). This course covers the theory and practice of teaching, principles of learning, interpersonal skills and your professional role and responsibilities. Training Assessment and Quality Assurance Programmes Level 3 Award in Understanding the Principles and Practices of Assessment

This is a single unit qualification ideal for those wanting to gain knowledge about the principles and practices of assessment. Level 3 Award in Assessing Competence in the Work Environment

E

This is a two unit qualification ideal for those who assess the performance and competence of others in the workplace. This includes one knowledge based unit and one practical unit assessment of performance in the workplace. Candidates must have their own learners to assess. Level 3 Award Assessing Vocationally Related Achievement

E

This is a two unit qualification ideal for those who assess the performance and competence of others but not in the workplace (e.g. classrooms, training workshops). This Award includes a knowledge unit and a practical unit assessment of performance in a vocational setting. Candidates must have their own learners to assess. Level 3 Certificate in Assessing Vocational Achievement

E

This is a three unit qualification which is made up of a combination of the three Awards listed above. The qualification is ideal for those who assess in the workplace and in a vocational setting and who wish to become a fully qualified assessor (replacement for A1 Assessor Award). Candidates undertaking this programme must be able to demonstrate assessment of their own learners in a workplace and vocational setting.
