Chickens for your Garden

E

This course is for anyone who is interested in keeping chickens as a hobby and would be suitable for first time chicken owners. The course will cover the main aspects of keeping chickens and will include; suitable breeds, accommodation, common poultry diseases, feeding and a trip to a local poultry breeder. There is no formal assessment with this course. You will achieve useful training in the theory and practice of caring for chickens.

Introduction to Dog Grooming (1 day course)

This course is designed to enable you to confidently carry out the following: • Ear cleaning • Nail trimming • Brushing out coats and removing mats • Bathing and drying coats • General scissor work to trim body, legs and feet

Dog Grooming with Clippers

E

Save money on grooming parlours and learn to clip your dog’s coat yourself. This course is designed to enable you to learn to confidently carry out the following: • Brushing out coat and removing mats • Clean ears and trim feet and nails • Bathing and drying coats • Clipping coat to style required

C & G Level 2 Certificate for Dog Grooming Assistants

This qualification is aimed at those wishing to develop grooming skills or who are looking to enter the grooming industry as a career or to progress if already working in it. Topics covered: • Preparing and grooming dogs prior to bathing • Bathing and drying coats ready for styling • Basic trimming of a dog’s coat • Control and restraint of animals • Cleaning and maintenance of equipment used • Maintaining the cleanliness of the working environment Assessment will be through a mandatory multi choice test, (computer based), plus written assignments and practical assessments. Entry requirements: No specific prior qualifications or experience required however a good standard of literacy and numeracy will be required to read and interpret written tasks, complete documents and make calculations. Students must also have a general confidence with all types of dogs.

Pet Care for Youngsters (7 – 14 years)

E

This is a one day course is aimed at children aged between 7 and 14 years who want to learn more about caring for pets. The course will cover all that you need to know to be a responsible pet owner. There is no formal assessment but you will have lots of fun while you learn. You will achieve useful training in the theory and practice of caring for your pets. Please bring a packed lunch.

Make your own Tubs and Hanging Baskets

E

This course is for beginners and keen gardeners who want to learn how to put together a basket. Please bring a container with you and you are welcome to purchase compost and plant material from the tutor for a small charge. Please contact Bridget Quinn for more details on (01386) 712630.

Growing Vegetables – Seasonal Special

This is a one day horticultural workshop designed for anybody with a garden or allotment and who loves growing their own food. It will be offered in the Autumn, Winter and Spring and will include practical seasonal tips. The workshop is a mixture of both theory and practice. The following topics will form the basis of the workshop: • Soil preparation • Compost making • Seed sowing – indoors and outdoors • Planting out, watering, fertilisers and weed control • Pests and diseases – prevention and cure • Harvesting and storage Students should be prepared for some practical work, therefore suitable work clothes are recommended.

Practical Horticulture – Tasks for the Season

This is a one day horticultural workshop designed for anybody with a garden and who needs practical advice to guide them through the season. It will be offered in the Autumn, Winter and Spring. The workshop is a mixture of theory and practical and the following topics will form the basis of the workshop: • Seasonal jobs in the garden • Plants with seasonal interest • Improving the soil for planting • Compost making • Plant propagation • Pests and diseases Students should be prepared for some practical work and suitable work clothes are recommended.

Growing Vegetables

E/M

Three sessions each concentrating on different aspects of vegetable growing. 1. Soil Preparation, seed sowing indoors and planning your crops. 2. Planting potatoes, outdoor seed sowing, potting up and fertilisers. 3. Planting out, seed sowing outdoors, weeds, pests, diseases and watering. You will need to wear warm clothing as some of the lesson time is spent out of doors.

The Practical Gardener

E

This four week course is ideal for anyone who needs practical gardening advice. The four sessions will be a mixture of theory and practical activities covering:    

Beds and borders through the seasons Container planting Problems, pests and weeds Lawn Care, patio areas and garden design

Students will need to come prepared for some practical outdoor work.
