Have You Checked Your Water Heater Lately? This is the time of year when the weather starts to transition from the hot temperatures of the summer, to the cool and brisk winds of the fall. While it is a beautiful time of year, it can be a little stressful if your water heater is not in top working condition. Not having hot water during the fall and winter months is unacceptable. It is one thing to go without hot water during the summer months. However, when the weather is cold outside it can actually be dangerous to not have hot water. This is especially true if you have very young children in your home, who need a warm bath in the evening. The best way that you can ensure that your water heater doesn’t breakdown or malfunction is to properly maintain the unit. Here are a few essential ways that you can make sure your water heater is properly maintained: 

Make sure that you know where your water heater is located, and that it is clear of any obstructions. It is important to do a visual inspection of the tank at least one time per months to make sure there aren’t any signs of leaking. This can be made much easier if your unit is in a place that is accessible.

Make sure you know what type of water heater you have and how it is powered. Most standard tank water heaters are powered by either electricity or by natural gas. If you have a tank less system, that is important to note as well. Keep a sheet of paper handy with all of the details of your system, including model number and tank capacity.

Make sure you know how to turn the water off to your home. Water heater trouble can come in many shapes and sizes but, the most damaging is a leaking or bursting tank. Knowing how to turn the water off to your home is important to minimizing this damage. If your water heater tank is leaking, or has burst, the amount of water that leaks will depend on how quickly the main water source is turned off.

Schedule regular maintenance. As with all parts of your plumbing system, regular maintenance is an important step to keeping your water heater in top working condition. If you want to avoid a water heater disaster this fall or winter – get your annual water heater maintenance scheduled now.
