Creative Care
A revolution is happening in the care of older people, and Brynfield Manor is at the forefront of it. Jenny White reports.
From the moment you arrive at Brynfield Manor you know it’s special. To start with there’s the location: a beautiful 19th century manor house that looks out over picturesque woods and gardens down to Langland Bay. Then there’s the welcome from manager Marion Davies and managing director Jason Banfield, whose genuine warmth and passion shine through in every aspect of the operation. They are on a mission to deliver a true home environment for their
residents and to remain at the forefront of care for older people, providing the support, attention and stimulation to ensure that even the frailest person gets the most out of their old age. The care home recently received a very positive report from the Care Inspectorate for Wales, but they are not resting on their laurels: they have now enlisted Nicola Furlong, formerly of ABMU health board, to come into the home on a consultancy basis to help them raise the bar further. The home has an ongoing programme to create hotel standard suites for residents, giving them the space and privacy to dine, watch TV and relax in their own room if they don’t feel like going to the lounges. When they do want to socialise, the home has several charming lounges, all with sea views, and a full time activities co-ordinator, Claire Davies, who works hard to cater for the interests of every single resident. “We have a wide range

of activities, including trips to Mumbles for fish and chips, theatre outings, karaoke, art sessions and more,” says Claire. “Sometimes my role is about just sitting and holding someone’s hand; this is one of the most valuable things we can do.” Other activities include pet therapy, live singers and visits to the in-house Sea Breeze hair and beauty salon, where residents can have their hair done, nails painted and enjoy a massage. The staff keep a careful eye on each resident’s moods, likes and dislikes so that they can tailor their care around their personal needs and preferences – and this extends to offering a choice of food at mealtimes.
