“I am confident when I say that I think SVSU’s political science department is the best in the state in teaching undergraduates about politics. At any given time, there are a dozen or more learning and engagement opportunities for our political science students: writing in our political science journal, attending a research conference, participating in a Lansing or Washington, D.C. internship, mentoring high school students, studying abroad, being a part of the Law Club or nationally recognized Moot Court and Model U.N. teams, or joining a peer academic club like Pi Sigma Alpha.
“I am a challenge-seeker and so when I was completing my Ph.D. at the University of Kentucky, I looked at the three job offers I had (the FDA, a research center, and SVSU) and decided hands-down on SVSU. Getting to interact with students at a teaching university like SVSU pushes you, and that’s what I wanted.

I am a believer in finding incentives to help students who want to learn—that’s called ‘game theory economics.’ I want my students to apply what they learn in a meaningful way. Memorizing isn’t going to work in my classroom.
